Best Books for Biomed

For all who are doing biomed, what is the most helpful book you have ever bought or borrowed for your course?

I am on a foundation year and I know that a book called chemistry by lewis and evens really got me through the year. I have read almost every chapter and used it over several different modulars.

Im going onto biomed next year (grade permitting :tongue:

) and like to buy my own books so I can write in them.

What book helped you pass your degree (or the years you have done so far)?

Im coming to the end of my second year, so far I have bought:
Biochemistry - Stryer (awesome in my first year biochem module)

Anatomy and Physiology - Stainfield (Awesome in my first year anatomy module)

Biology of Microorganisms - Brock (Was a present, haven't really used it - not enough medical microbiology in it)

Essential Haematology - Hoffbrand (Been my bible for my haematology module)

Clinical Chemistry - Marshall (Been my bible for medical biochem module)

How the immune system works - Sompayrac (Girlfriend lent me it in the first year, was pretty good, didn't really use it, but a good book none the less)

Practical Skills in the Biomolecular Sciences - Reed (Girlfriend lent me it, awesome book, explains the principles of the more analytical stuff like chromatography and spectroscopy, also has endless info on how to write a scientific paper, how to revise science, how to take lecture notes - been a massive help for my Qualitative and quantitative methods in analysis module)

And a molecular cell biology book - its upstairs and I really cant be arsed to go get it, its huge, black cover with some cells in fluorescence microscopy on the cover - I guess it will be of huge use in my final year - haven't really used it this year in my molecular cell biology module as my lecture notes are detailed enough for the exam)

Most other books I use are from google books - very good for referencing in assignments. Our library always has the good books reserved for weeks :|

P.S. overall I would say Clinical chemistry has helped the most - but I am biased because I want to specialise in biochem, plus you cant really have one book for the whole course. I guess i've turned to Biochemistry-Stryer a few times over different modules, but that was more for snippets of info for assignments rather than knowledge.

Edit: You may want to wait until you actually start the course - your lecturers will give you a reading list/suggest which books to purchase. Most of the books I have listed here I was told to buy, by my lecturers.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I already have that practical skills for bimolecular science book and found it quite helpful in my biology practical write ups.
I will take a look at these book in the library

Oh I will wait till I begin. However I have already been at the uni a year (foundation year)and worked with some of my lectures for next year and I know they dont always recommend the right books.
For example I had three lectures tell me that the Campbell biology book would be the best book I ever buy.
I bought it. £50. and I have not touched it this year. Everyone else in my year said the same thing. Im passing with 70-80% per modular so their recommendation didnt make a difference really.

Im just looking at some option really so I can take some out the library over summer and see which ones I like the look of. :smile:

I have got Alberts molecular biology of the cell, and Biochemistry by Berg. They were quite expensive so I would suggest buying second hand ones. You could buy earlier editions as they don't change too much but I would check. I haven't used them that much in my second year (more jornals really) but biomed is a hard one cause it covers a wide range of topics.

its hard to say this book will which works for me will work for you as uni use different books, depends on what your reading list and what your modules cover

my biochem book is Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry

Brody's Human Pharmacology, it another big book for my course

Roitt, I.M. and Delves, P.J., Essential Immunology

The books I've used this year are generally classed as the bogstandard uni biology and chemistry books
Biology 9th edition by Raven and other writers (cost me £50, but has all the info needed for biology :smile:

)
Chemistry 9th edition by Ebbing and Gammon (came with a hardback on organic chemistry and cost me £70)
