I can't believe you've just said that... Explain to me how media is more relevant to real life that maths is?

Media Studies is more relevant to life because EVERYBODY consumes the media and should know how it is crafted and mediated so as not to have their brain sucked out by it. Yes, maths is needed but only at a basic level. Degree level maths is completely irrelevant to life as nobody is ever going to use equations in their lives or maths of that level. Degree level maths is just for the qualification.

Some of the responses on here perfectly sum up why Ex-poly's are disrespected by the denizens of TSR.

As much as the sheer faggotry that comes out of the mouths of the likes of torchwood annoys me, I can understand why so many are inclined to think that way. It's a bit of a downer really, nobody should feel like they have something to prove because of where they studied. It's disheartening to know that so many people will judge you based on where you study.

I try not tar everyone with the same brush, not everyone has a superiority complex, yet there's many here who study at top 20 institutions and are frankly extremely dense and bigoted.

I suppose I'm sick of seeing these threads and the resulting fight between the "Academics" and the "Scrubs". Last I checked, the dictionary definition of 'Academic' referred to the educational activity one undertook at said institution.

They're all acknowledged Universities, using the word 'Academic' like it's an elitist club detracts from your attempt to slander a lesser institution.

Nobody will argue the fact that there are better Universities and there are worse Universities, the same is true in all walks of life but at the end of the day, there's always going to be a ledge above you that you just can't reach no matter how much better you think you are.

This post will probably be about as effective as pissing in the wind, a messy mistake that I'm inevitably going to regret but hey, c'est la vie.

Please, please stop with the whole Maths is useless tirade. Mathematics runs your computers, televisions and phones.

I'd imagine you 'consume' a whole load of media on said devices, wouldn't be much to a Media Degree if you only had hand written books to work with would it? You personally might not need an advanced understanding of mathematics to get by but this by no means is grounds to post such a sweeping generalisation.

Go to Sheffield Hallam if you want, just don't study media.

There is no such thing as 'the media'.

Of course there is. Media texts are anything from books, newspapers and magazines to films, tv shows and websites. "The Media" is a collective term used to describe media texts in general.

I want to do Media at Sheffield Hallam but people are saying that it's not that good (low entry requirements). Does it have a bad reputation?

Do you want to pursue a career in journalism or is your media interest purely academic? If you really want a career in that area, I'd advise avoiding Media degrees at all costs and going for a subject that will give you more scope and potential for specialism, e.g History, Politics, Languages.

I would like to pursue a career working on film/tv sets. Specifically, I don't know what that is yet, whether writing, directing or camera work. Yes I'm interested academically in media studies; it's the only subject that I'm interested in to be honest. I have been advised elsewhere to do film studies with media studies which would give me a specialism. But to be honest I'm not really that keen on doing anything other than media studies or film studies/tv studies at degree level.
It's not really regarded as a 'good' university, i.e. it's not in the top 20. As an ex-poly it's not bad.

just think they go to uni just to get an education which i seem to think is just sad!

Erm.

Why do you go to uni then? 3 grand a year seems a fairly hefty price to pay if you don't actually care about your degree.

I do care about my degree... What I was saying in that quote was that I don't think studying for a degree is worth it if the content is not relevant to anything other than getting the qualification. Therefore I would never do maths.

By the way I'm in sixth form still; I don't go to uni yet. Still deciding what I want to do...

Media studies, bit of a risky one as it limits your oportunities;still if it's something you want to do go for it. Sheffield Hallam is quite good and it's improving all the time. However i's main strenghts lie in Buisness studies , Law and economics with science.

You ahve to laugh at the people ribbing both media studies and Sheffield Hallam, the country is scr9w8d, mass unemployment all round, especially for grads as there are so many. I think we all need luck in the job markets
I think it depends on the course really, I'm a 3rd year Bioscience student and have few complaints.

I do understand what you mean, but you ultimately have to look at it from the point of future employers, because that is really why you go to uni, to get a job, not to drink your money away. However, you can't demonise maths, it is a lot more employable than your choice of degree I'm afraid.

the content is relevant to the getting the degree, the degree is relevant to getting the job you want and getting the job you want is relevant to being successful.

Yeah but the University of Sheffield doesn't do Media Studies or Film Studies.

There's a reason for that.

I do realise that. But it's also a hell of a lot less interesting.
