Wolverhampton Freshers 2011!

Hi, I'm just curious - who'll be at Wolverhampton in September, and what are you going to study?

I'll hopefully be there to study Forensic Science, which I've wanted to do for ages! So, anyone else going here?

Does anyone at the uni have advice for us Freshers? It'll be nice to have a thread where people can just... meet people before they go.

Hey........ Finally accepted Biomedical Science @ Wolverhampton....Anyone else starting?

Anyways, for the guys on about studying Clinical Physiology, theres alot of info if you dont know about this course.

1. Firstly, you have to wait until about June (I applied last year but choose to carry on working) to the Unis open day.

2. As far as I know, Clinical Physiology CAN ONLY BE STUDIED through applying through NHS jobs at a local hospital (Which havent been advertised as to yet)

3. You can only study this course once obtaining a place/job at a NHS hospital as a large proportion of the course is assessment based portfolios.

I will be applying through the NHS too (as this way the course is fully funded)

Hope this helps?? Think the course utor is Ruth Shiner, so try contacting the uni direct.

Can I ask why on earth you are studying this course?

Have you read about the state of the forensic market or done any research whatesoever with regards to the provision of your degree and the likelihood of ever securing employment within your field?

I was one of the first batch of students to go on this course when it first started and I can tell you that my lecturers waited until the 3rd year to slowly break it to me that I might not ever get a job in forensics. No one else on my course did, but through chance I knew someone in the field and managed to get a job via an agency and then eventually became permanent. This was in 2006. I was the only person in my class to do so, everyone else went into teaching or something completely different. I can only shudder to think the amount of graduates the university of wolverhampton has milked by offering this course.

My advice to you is don't waste your money and put yourself in debt. I am working in Forensic Science, for the biggest UK forensic provider that is soon to shut down and can tell you now that the future of forensics is in flux and work is going towards the private sector. The private sector will have the pick of the people they want in a market that is already flooded with experienced staff. Not to mention that since police budgets are being cut, expenditure on forensics is being hit the hardest. The market has already shrank from £170mill to £110mill and be squeezed further. The focus on crimes that were once investigated by SOCO's and reporting officers are going to be placed on only important and serious crimes.

Unfortunately, for students like yourself, you will practically have no chance at all :frown:

Read page 43 onwards - http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200405/cmselect/cmsctech/96/96i.pdf

If anyone else wants to know anymore about this course of forensics please message me, I'll be more than glad to help out.
