Well tbh you probably studied through your teenage years and got to where you are. While some people partied uncontrollably and will be stacking shelves at Asda for the next 10 years.

this response only comes from people who are equally in the same situation.

imsoacademic thinks that getting into oxbridge is the panacea for all of life's disappointments.

Hey,

I'm 19 years old male, in my first year at uni and have found a girl who stuff is starting to happen with.
But when I look back over my teenage years I feel like I've missed out on a lot... I've never been in a relationship or even kissed, never really went to parties / got drunk and didn't have a solid group of friends (more just good friends with individuals). Its not that I haven't enjoyed the past 5 or so years of my life - I really have - its just that I feel that I may have missed out on some stuff :frown:
I don't really know what I'm hoping to get by posting on here, I just wanted to put it out there!

Congratulations mate, it seems youre more bark than bahh.

Oh my God. Please leave spaces between words and punctuation marks. Reading this made me dizzy!

I get what you're saying but.... I'm not so sure you can just assume that. I know a lot of people who make A's and B's and go out and party every weekend, hell I could as well, just party instead of go to the coffee shop, it isn't like partying is going to impact my grades any.

Some people like to party while others dont, doesn't mean one group is smarter than the other.

I see what you're saying yeah just some people are lucky enough to have the balance while others don't and so work with school instead and others don't and fail. I was the latter so speaking from experience

All moderation I think. I didn't mean to generalise everyone who parties is on the dole ahaa

Totally missed out on teen life for nothing and I didn't even enjoy the teen years....:frown:

It's weird but I kind of feel the opposite of this. I'm quite an introverted person when it comes down to it but when I was at school I forced myself to go out and do the usual sorts of stuff because I didn't want to 'miss out'. However, looking back on it, my biggest regrets (getting into police trouble etc) come from trying to have that experience. I wish now that I'd spent less time buying into an image of 'having a good time' because it seemed like the thing to do and just done more of what I actually enjoyed.

In my opinion the sort of Skins view of teenage life is pretty fake and massively over the top. It seems like a tv execs idea of what these 'crazy kids' get up to (which is basically what it is). One of the reasons the Inbetweeners (especially the first series) was so funny was that it's a pretty accurate picture of what being a teenager (or a teenage boy at least) is like. Obviously it's exaggerated for comedy but there's a lot of truth in it.

Basically if you enjoyed yourself don't waste your time regretting not doing this or that because you probably haven't missed out on that much anyway.

Can someone help me? When I click on my profile to view it the main picture that comes up is one of me and my recent ex... How do I change it to one of the ones in my photo album? Feel free to look at my profile to see if you don't get what I'm talking about. Thanks
I've struggled with mental illness for a lot of years, and during my college years I couldn't drink or be out of the house for more than a few hours because of it. At university I've hardly gone out, and I haven't forged any strong relationships. In spite of this I don't really feel like I've missed out. I've still had a good life overall, and there are plenty of things I'm grateful for which make up for it. I don't think that you value your teenage years only on memories of wild nigts out.

I'm being truthful. How dare you make the assumption that because I'm "young" my opinions are not worthy.

Here's something, I'm as entitled to an opinion as anyone else.

If you don't agree with what I say, fine, but don't say that I "cannot comment". Yes I can.

it really shows your age how defensive/arrogant you are getting.

dont knock it till you've tried it

So why knock my way of life?

Humans are inherently social beings, whether you like it or not social interaction is quite integral to personal development - yes you don't have to conform to conventional standards or means of socialisation, but it does make you a richer, more confident and understanding (of self and others) person. Usually.

I'd rather not conform to conventional standards then.

The memories are awesome, keep in mind I hate people, as soon as I left secondary school I distanced myself from like all but 2 people and I still enjoyed it. I mean even now if I go to my schools town I get crazy nostalgia visiting the 'stoner stones' or 'boggly' or even 'the far bench'. **** even 'piss hill'.

And when it comes to experiences, well I dont know how to answer. Maybe an example or something? I dunno, I just feel so much more mature than a lot of people. Less naive, more self-aware and most definately tons more confident. You cant possibly understand the hilarity of having to explain to your mum why you came home with a new puppy after a weekend at a camp-out. Have you ever been stuck in the middle of a large pond in a boat with everyone to stoned out of their minds to row the boat back to land? Or what about tricking people with 'the magic helmet'? We made tons of people cry and bug out like crazy. I have those stories to tell, what do you have apart from an obsession with Oxbridge.

So the "teenage experience" is about trying out stuff in order to have stupid stories to tell, i.e. essentially talking about **** all day.

I agree with you.

I think you're essentially critiquing the superficiality of the "teenage dream" as manufactured by present society. There is something to be said about that, I find the youth lifestyle terrible, yet I participate in it regardless to some degree.

I feel that as a teenager, I have every right to criticise it. Most people on this thread have had their teenage years done and gone.

For me, I witness this on a daily basis. People thinking that being "social" is everything.

i kind of think it is. these years are the ones where you have an excuse to be silly and mess around. the stories are great conversation tools when things start to run dry. think about comedians, a good proportion of their jokes are them telling their strange experiences from when they were younger.

Wouldn't you agree though that such a stage of exposure and experimentation is necessary or at least beneficial for proper development though? I'm not sure whether this is the case or not by the way, just interested in your opinion.

How do people become successful socially without practise in social situations? Arguably the social situations encountered as teenagers have little connection with the adult world, but there is still a great degree of social interaction involved.
