Same for Sheff Hallam but I perceived the students to be much nicer. The same goes for the lecturers. Sheff Uni lecturers were not as friendly, approachable and relaxed as those at Sheff Hallam.

It is my experience and my opinion. I have not been stuck up. I do not think I am better than Sheff Uni students. I simply said that Sheff Hallam appeared to me to be friendlier. I am not a student at either. Rather I am basing my opinion on the experience I have had at both so my opinions are not even biased. Its an observation. Not snobbery by any means.

Your saying that by stating that I believe someone to be a snob I am a snob myself?! So if I call someone racist does that make me racist too? Sorry for bringing up the R word. I have only used it as good example to illustrate my point.

obviously i will care about my degree but university isnt just about education. i know it is the main thing but it is also about being independent, looking after yourself and having a good time.

A lot of people are quite snobby about hallam but it is considered to be quite good and I will be going there in september but I don't know about their media studies

Sheffield uni does actually offer journalism as a degree but it is ranked no.1 for that subject so which ever way u look at it Sheffield uni kicks ass! If people are serious about getting in media why don't they either do this accredited course or do an conventional academic subject but get involved with the student paper/radio/union?

My mum kicked me out of her house when I was 17, I had to get a full-time job on top of doing my A2s. I missed most of my lessons (through having to work) and despite trying my best to do it all, I ended up with CCC. If I didn't have to go to that crumby factory every day to pay for my room/ bills/ food (things most of you took entirely for granted at home), I'd have done far better. As a result, I missed out on the best unis, I accepted a place at Hallam in 2004.

I have to admit, I meet some students from some particular disciplines and cringe at how genuinely dumb they are. It makes me feel terrible. I'm the first to declare "I'm at Hallam and I've got my smarts about me", but I've met some major idiots there, I wonder how some of them got to uni at all.

In my subject, we did have some plebs join at the start, but all of them had dropped out by the time we'd finished our first year exams. We were a small group at the end (about 20), and almost all of those I stay in touch with have gone on to much bigger and better things (jobs at big companies, postgrad et cetera), so don't write it off straight away.

It depends entirely on the subject you read. Hallam run courses such as "Events management", and "Hotel Catering" (along with dozens of others), which have hardly any entry requirements and do attract the less-intellectually able (sweeping generalisatin there, obvs not all), but the uni do that because it makes them money. You can't expect a bright future to fall into your lap on the back of those subjects, but they were never intended for that purpose.

Sadly, the net result is that Hallam has a reputation for harbouring dipsh!ts. True for some subjects, certainly not most.

And yes, if lifting weights is your biggest achievement, than should you really be going to university, maybe you already know this and have subsequently chosen a poor excuse for a university (hallam)

I wasn't meaning to sound sharp - I just think it's more sensible to pick either a traditional course and do the training afterwards / or a course with a strong practical element so you'll have tangible skills and specialisms when the degree is finished, e.g. Film & TV Production. A degree in Media Studies is half way between the two because it's largely theory-based, and doesn't prep you as well in terms of skills for your first media job.
