48÷2(9+3) = ?

It's two:

9+3 = 12
2 x 12 = 24
48 ÷ 24 = 2

I say it is 2 as well since it is 48 divided by 2 times the sum of 9 and 3. One of the first steps of simplification is to simplify what are in brackets.

So 48÷2(12)

Then you still need to simply 2(12) which is 24.

48÷24=2

If it wanted to be 288 shouldn't the first part be in brackets as well as the second?

brackets always comes first, then youre just left with 48÷2x12, then you work from right to left, like computers/calculators (the more advanced ones anyway...) do. Just like 48÷12÷6 = 24, not 4/6

288. Multiplication is implicated by xy, so 48 / 2(9+3) is 48/2 x (9+3). 9+3 is 12. So 48/2 * 12. Division is next, so 24 * 12. 24 * 12 is 288.

No, as the division is implicitly done before the multiplication

Computers have lots of different ways of working out the order of things. Technically, computers use associativity and ordering of operators. And then associativity and ordering depends on the language it is coded it.

Brackets first:
48 / 2 * 12
Then do multiplication and division from left to right.
48 / 2 = 24.
24 * 12 = 288

That's actually really odd because about 2 hours ago I was talking to someone about mental arithmetic and the question he randomly picked was 24 * 12.

Why have you suddenly started going from right to left?

48/2(9+3)
= 48/2(9+3)
= 24(12)
= 288

It's 288.

48 ÷ 2 x (9 + 3)
=48 ÷ 2 x 12
=24 x 12
=288

48÷2(9+3) = 288 because the order in BIDMAS infers:

1. Brackets (9+3) = 12
2. Division = 48/2 = 24
3. Multiplication 24*12 = 28

(I, A and S are not part of the equation so I skipped the stages)
