Why are lawyers seen as not useful/crucial to society as doctors?

I see this a lot when people have debates about doctors and lawyers - that doctors save lives, aid ailments and so forth; whilst lawyers defend criminals, get involved in suits that tear people apart, etc.

Is this the case? Or is the role of lawyers too easily dismissed?

I'd say Doctors are generally considered more important... Probably largely due to the stupid national accident helpline adverts that we're constantly bombarded with.
Because God made Snakes before Lawyers... as practice.

Because doctors save lives and are the reason that the quality of life has improved so exponentially and without them it would be a horrendously worse situation than without lawers. Think about it, its obvious...
doctors save lives

lawyers draft general terms and conditions of supersrs companies such as Aldi

cos they are usually corrupt ********s?

Its a general idea that lawyers have a moral defecit due to the fact that they may be representing less than reputable people.

They're both useful. Without lawyers, the law wouldn't be sucessfully upheld and more people would be victims of crime.
Lawyers do some bad stuff and occasionally some good stuff. Doctors do good stuff, pretty much exclusively. Obviously we still need lawyers, though.

Without lawyers and a legal system - the civil society that we all enjoy; would not exist.

[Gross generalisation]Doctors become doctors to help others, lawyers become lawyers to get rich[/Gross generalisation]

Lawyers have long had a bad reputation. Too many of them seem to be in it only for their own benefit and this detracts from the good that a lot of them do. Plus, generally politicians studied law...

Without lawyers, the world as we know it could not function.

Trades couldn't be done, contracts couldn't be enforced ect.

People like to say how terrible lawyers are, but if something they perceive to be unfair happens to them, you can bet they'll consider calling a lawyer to help them.

I still say doctor is a more noble profession, but more important? Lawyer every time.
Well, Doctors do kill people. Lawyers don't?

But in all seriousness, lawyers can ensure that innocent people are not convicted of crimes. And such.
As with any profession, some lawyers are great and others are not. Some lawyers have been truly inspiring figures standing up for justice - Clarence Darrow, anyone?

engineers ,doctors, teachers, farmers>and everything else goes below
No matter the society, no matter the culture, no matter the century doctors have always and will always be useful lawyers not so much. That's not to say lawyers don't have their own merit, just that they are not as crucial or provide as much benefit to mankind as doctors do generally.

because most of the seem to care about making money and cooperate ladder, rather than helping the innocent. most of them end up defending the criminals just because of technicality.
Lawyers uphold democracy by ensuring someone 'is innocent until proven guilty'. Also, the right to a fair trial is ensured as well as the burden of proof falling on the accuser.

Lawyers are generally good, as are doctors. Lawyers however often let criminals get away with crimes based on ridiculous loopholes, and so I respect doctors more as a group.

if there were no lawyers or whatever there'd be a whole lot of disarray and messed up world etc but whatever

if there was no doctors, you wouldn't even be alive to cause any trouble because you'd either die during pregnancy, die giving birth or die growing up. either way, you'd be dead

doctors will always trump lawyers no matter what country you're in
