Saudis to build world's tallest skyscraper - double the size of the Burj Khalifa!

'It will take a staggering 12 minutes to reach the top of the £12 billion building in the escalator.'

Surely an elevator would be better, no?
I'm sorry but I find this culture of ridiculous extravagance absolutely repulsive. I know in the UK we live vastly beyond our means anyway, but this is beyond any recognizable forms of excessiveness, which is even worse when you consider that the basic rights than Saudis and the South Asian workers who will build this lack.
I was talking to a colleague about this the other day (we work at a CG company that does a a lot of animations for not-yet-built buildings, so whilst we aren't architects, we are quite familiar with big, middle eastern penis measuring buildings) and we were sort of torn on the subject.

My take is that pushing the limits of human capability is usually pretty amazing. There are the usual political ramifications of course, and technological, but to me the most amazing legacy of the space race was the advancement of human kinds discovery and exploration. We went beyond our borders into new areas and push forth the boundaries of human capability. This isn't much different - its not really necessary, but nor was going to the moon. That's never been a reason not to do someone.

That said, Saudi Arabia is an absolute crap hole. Most of the people who live in poverty can't read or write, almost all career evolution is based upon nepotism and the base of the entire thing is going to run out in less than 100 years. What would impress me is if they built the tallest building in the world, with beautiful architecture (ie not this) and interior - and used it as a school, instead of the usual mixed-use, hotel apartments office blah blah, just like every other building in the middle east. Make it into the most well equipped, best staffed, inclusive school, university, and research facility in the world. Measure your dick AND provide an incredible opportunity to the people in your country who are destined for a life of destitution.

I think such a building would ruin any skyline.

Agreed! When you look at the picture and see all those buildings and then this massive one mile tall building...it's a bit sickening.
Still, it won't distract us, these useless leaders shall soon face the end! And for anyone who speaks Arabic, this is the bravest man in Saudi Arabia....I hope he is still alive:

I'm fairly certain the average Saudi would rather have a decent constitution and no corruption, or the godforsaken Pakistani slave labourers would rather have some basic human rights. Same goes for Bahrain, UAE, etc.

These Arab states literally revolt me, they're the most unclassy, uncultured places on the planet. They think by making endless skyscrapers that shows how "cultured" and "modern" they are...whilst most of their citizens live in poverty.

This.

Still I doubt we will ever see any changes in Saudi till the king dies or they run out of money to bribe the country.

Bloody hell, calm down mate. There isn't a single industrialised country in the world that isn't trying to lay claim to something. Especially considering it's the title of 'World's tallest building', which different countries have been jostling around for. There's no need for you to spill your shrill hyperbole at the drop of a hat.

I'm not your mate, and as I said to the other guy, find me another country in a similar situation with regards to its society, demographics and economy and my comments would be exactly the same.

The point I'm making isn't that I disagree with your perception of Saudi society, I agree in part (perhaps disagree in your tone). But you missed the point. I'm saying you don't need to be so shrill all the time. Okay, so the Saudi's are building an uber tall structure for the sake of having a title. If it wasn't the Saudis it would be the Americans, if it weren't the Americans it would be the Japanese, who knows. I'm saying your overuse of hyperbole is just completely out of context and unnecessary. If you carry on like this, you won't be taken seriously.

And jesus, what is this secondary school? I'm not your mate either, it's simply an informal greeting. Relax.

I've always understood "shrill" to mean high pitched, and considering this is a written conversation I'm wondering if that's the right word to use

As for hyperbole, is anything I wrote about the state of Saudi society and the Saudi regime exaggeration?

Yes, my writing is to the point, it may sound like I'm taking it very seriously, but that's just how I write.

If you carry on like this, you won't be taken seriously.

Oh no...I'd lose my TSR popularity or something ":frown:"

S'called a metaphor

Generally speaking, yes. Just about everything you say is. Dial it back about 3 notches and you're probably about right.

Not, 'to the point', just completely off target and unnecessary. When talking about Saudi politics, I would say "have at it", but come on, seriously? You can't be naive enough to believe that the title of 'world's tallest building' isn't a title that countries are envious of and will try to have?

Oh no...I'd lose my TSR popularity or something ":frown:"

I know you're being sarcastic, but does anybody really care about popularity on TSR? :dontknow:

Couldn't have said it any better.

Great, so when a woman gets raped they'll have the tallest building in the world there so they can throw the whore off.
Because building the tallest building is waay better than looking after you people.

How about you stop clutching at straws and actually quote some examples of what I've exaggerated?

Fairly certain I've said this at least twice in this thread, but make a thread on a similar country in the same economic/social situation as KSA and I'd say exactly the same thing. That's not naivety or unawareness, it's my point of view.

Using the actions of the ruling Saudi aristocracy as the bench mark for the culture of Saudi Arabian society, is nothing put pure exaggeration.

And again, as I've stated, your views about how a certain country spends its money isn't my issue. It's that it's completely off target and unnecessary. I wasn't aware you were this naive.

I'd hate to get stuck in the lift, thats a long way down to your death.

What are they going to do when their oil runs out? They can build as many hideous air conditioned stadiums and giant pricks as they like for now, but that black gold isn't always going to be flowing.

I just hope I get to see it all fall apart in my lifetime.

Oh my god :facepalm2:

Arab "state" not people. My criticism is with the undemocratic regimes that run these countries, not the people.

I never actually brought up Arab culture. I said flashing your wealth with endless skyscrapers whilst your people remain poor is an uncultured and unclassy thing to do. Which it is.

Well I wouldn't want to generalise individual citizens of Saudi Arabia, but I agree, as a state their monarchical regime is supremely extravagant and indifferent to the plight of their "brothers"

It might help if you actually read my posts before whinging about them.

What did you expect me to say, "herp derp omg skaiscraperz!!11"?

It's a Debate & Current Affairs forum, we tend to discuss things in more depth here.

I agree with the architect who calls this tower 'phallic'. What's up with the Arab world penis measuring with architecture?

This post would have put a smile on my face if I didn't know it was written by you. I doubt the reason you have these feelings have anything with your empathy towards the Arab people..

Yes, as an international socialist, obviously the exploitation of workers and the masses have nothing to do with me...:curious:
