Accomodation at Imperial

Only know about Garden & Beit I'm afraid

I'm not the best person to ask, but from what I gather, from who I know: practice in their rooms, orchestra/bands, or music lessons (for many people home is just a tube journey away on the weekend).

There's certainly a big music scene here anyway (with links to the Royal College of Music, what with it being wedged between RSM/Chem Eng/opposite Beit), so you'll bump into likeminded peeps, if you'd like to head in that direction extra-curricularly/socially.

Damn. So are Garden and Beit the only piano ones then?

I guess I could still play the flute in my room... although scales might piss a lot of people of....

So what do all the musicians do then? :O I know there are a couple of orchestras right...and you can do Physics with Music...

I think Southside also has a piano, saw it from the accommodation videos. + there are 10 dedicated practice rooms (most of them with pianos) in the Blyth Centre, Sherfield Building.

Question about the bathrooms in Imperial

Is it mutliple cubicles per floor or is there 1 bathroom (the kind you have in your house) that everyone uses? How does it work anyway and what's the average shower time that people take?

Firstly, opinions on Orient House??
Absolute trek from campus and expensive but it looks sooo nice. i can see the distance being a major negative, but i've been used to getting up at half 6 and travelling 35 minutes to school for a long time now...

Secondly, opinions on Pembridge Hall??
Bit of background info; i'm looking for a single en-suite and this seems a decent shout. not too far away and cheaper than most.

does anyone (with experience) know anything i don't?

In halls where most people don't have ensuite rooms, like in Evelyn Gardens, you generally have around 4 separate toilets per floor and 2 separate showers per floor. In between floors there are more showers and a toilet and there are also a couple of separate bathrooms with a bathtub in each hall, which most people never use.

Average shower time is a funny question to ask lol.. you don't need to worry about that, there's always one free somewhere if you find someone using yours. I would assume girls take longer than guys and most guys will take around 10 minutes? Can't say I go around timing people's shower time....




I would avoid Orient House. It's not actually run by the Imperial contractors, instead it is run by Unite so you get a worse service in terms of maintenence and cleaning. You do get much bigger rooms than other halls and the trek isn't a problem for most people.. but apparently it's just a really quiet and antisocial hall. The way the flats are set out - where you share a kitchen with just a few people and take care of the kitchen yourself - is different to the other halls (where a whole floor shares 1 kitchen). I've mostly only heard moans about Orient. It is near the river however and in a very nice area.

I would say you've summed up Pembridge nicely. In my opinion it is in the best location of any Imperial Hall, being relatively close to the campus but you get to live in Notting Hill. I only know a couple of people who go there but they seem to enjoy the walk across Hyde Park. You'll get a large kitchen which is obviously great for socialising with a lot of people, and the rooms are pretty nice (same standard as Evelyn Gardens halls).

I've been living with an ex-Orient student this year and they reckon it was quite a social hall because of the trek. No one I know complained about the layout, or Unite, and Imperial Wharf is nice as you say - the only complaints I've regularly heard are about the trek, which you quickly get used to. Oh and the fact that the 'bathroom' is a wet room haha. Obviously that's anecdotal stuff from both of us though

Notting Hill is nice (Notting Hill Gate less so). But 'best location'? It's not South Kensington... next to campus... (just saying! )

Opinions on Weeks/Garden Hall? I know it's quite close to Ethos which is a plus factor, how does it compare to East Side Halls?

Do you spend a lot of time in the halls within a day btw? Or do most people just hangout within the Imperial Campus/library after lectures etc.

Also, is a 30-40 minute shower normal?
I'm hoping the guys will feel sorry for the girls and let them have extra shower time

It's more like the first picture. I have even risked getting weird looks from my neighbours to take a picture of my bathroom for you..



So there's a toilet straight ahead, one perpendicular to it and a shower cubicle on the far right. There is another identical bathroom down the other end of the floor. If I go down one flight of stairs, between my floor and the one below, there is another bathroom with 1 toilet room and 3 shower cubicles. There is also a separate bathroom which is more similar to your second picture - it has a sink, bathtub and toilet.

Honestly no one cares how long you take to shower. If you go to the bathroom and someone else is using the shower, you go to a different one and take as long as you want then return to your room. Nobody is going to hang outside the cubicle for 40 minutes waiting for you to come out.

anyone know which are the most over subscribed halls?

Hi i've recently chosen imperial as my insurance for maths. Do i get to choose accommodation in May like everyone else or is it done after results day?
