Accomodation at Imperial

Only know about Garden & Beit I'm afraid :moon:

I'm not the best person to ask, but from what I gather, from who I know: practice in their rooms, orchestra/bands, or music lessons (for many people home is just a tube journey away on the weekend).

There's certainly a big music scene here anyway (with links to the Royal College of Music, what with it being wedged between RSM/Chem Eng/opposite Beit), so you'll bump into likeminded peeps, if you'd like to head in that direction extra-curricularly/socially.

:holmes:

Right, thanks. I'll lurk around in case another musician has any suggestions!

Yeah I'll hover around the Royal College of Music during Fresher's week and see who I can meet :ninja:

Damn. So are Garden and Beit the only piano ones then?

I guess I could still play the flute in my room... although scales might piss a lot of people of....

So what do all the musicians do then? :O I know there are a couple of orchestras right...and you can do Physics with Music...

I think Southside also has a piano, saw it from the accommodation videos. + there are 10 dedicated practice rooms (most of them with pianos) in the Blyth Centre, Sherfield Building.

Oh brilliant, thanks. Do you know if we have to book in practice times or is it more informal?

Firstly, opinions on Orient House??
Absolute trek from campus and expensive but it looks sooo nice. i can see the distance being a major negative, but i've been used to getting up at half 6 and travelling 35 minutes to school for a long time now...

Secondly, opinions on Pembridge Hall??
Bit of background info; i'm looking for a single en-suite and this seems a decent shout. not too far away and cheaper than most.

does anyone (with experience) know anything i don't?
thank you for what's bound to be an aid to my cause.

Question about the bathrooms in Imperial

Is it mutliple cubicles per floor or is there 1 bathroom (the kind you have in your house) that everyone uses? How does it work anyway and what's the average shower time that people take? :ninja:

In halls where most people don't have ensuite rooms, like in Evelyn Gardens, you generally have around 4 separate toilets per floor and 2 separate showers per floor. In between floors there are more showers and a toilet and there are also a couple of separate bathrooms with a bathtub in each hall, which most people never use.

Average shower time is a funny question to ask lol.. you don't need to worry about that, there's always one free somewhere if you find someone using yours. I would assume girls take longer than guys and most guys will take around 10 minutes? Can't say I go around timing people's shower time....

I would avoid Orient House. It's not actually run by the Imperial contractors, instead it is run by Unite so you get a worse service in terms of maintenence and cleaning. You do get much bigger rooms than other halls and the trek isn't a problem for most people.. but apparently it's just a really quiet and antisocial hall. The way the flats are set out - where you share a kitchen with just a few people and take care of the kitchen yourself - is different to the other halls (where a whole floor shares 1 kitchen). I've mostly only heard moans about Orient. It is near the river however and in a very nice area.

I would say you've summed up Pembridge nicely. In my opinion it is in the best location of any Imperial Hall, being relatively close to the campus but you get to live in Notting Hill. I only know a couple of people who go there but they seem to enjoy the walk across Hyde Park. You'll get a large kitchen which is obviously great for socialising with a lot of people, and the rooms are pretty nice (same standard as Evelyn Gardens halls).

I believe we have to book, got the info from here http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/arts/blythcentre/facilities. The music scene is quite big apparently http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/arts/music

I've been living with an ex-Orient student this year and they reckon it was quite a social hall because of the trek. No one I know complained about the layout, or Unite, and Imperial Wharf is nice as you say - the only complaints I've regularly heard are about the trek, which you quickly get used to. Oh and the fact that the 'bathroom' is a wet room haha. Obviously that's anecdotal stuff from both of us though

Notting Hill is nice (Notting Hill Gate less so). But 'best location'? It's not South Kensington... next to campus... (just saying! )

Opinions on Weeks/Garden Hall? I know it's quite close to Ethos which is a plus factor, how does it compare to East Side Halls?

Do you spend a lot of time in the halls within a day btw? Or do most people just hangout within the Imperial Campus/library after lectures etc.
They don't compare, hence the filthy price difference. Garden in particular has it's charm though. Weeks is a child of the 60's (make of that what you will).

If you have the luxury of living on campus then lots of people go back to halls for lunch.

Otherwise, I'd have said campus during the day, then back to halls/library after lectures (in between lectures if you're keen!)

Okay so are the showers like cubicles like this

or just proper proper bathrooms like this but without the baths?

Sorry for my blatant illiteracy! :s-smilie:

Also, is a 30-40 minute shower normal? :ninja:
I'm hoping the guys will feel sorry for the girls and let them have extra shower time :colondollar:

Great, so it looks like I won't have to worry about that when choosing halls.

And I want to join the orchestra sooo much, but I'm just not going to be good enough!

Right, I'm off to do a load of maths revision so I make my grades. And then I'm going to be playing the flute all summer so I can then join ICSO!

Indeed I can't say I've been to Orient, so I guess whether you are comfortable there really depends on what kind of person you are. The few people I know who live there don't mind, but have always said they'd prefer to be in other halls.

I know most would argue that the halls with the best location are Beit and Southside/Eastside but in my opinion they aren't nicer locations, just more convenient locations. My friends in Eastside leave 10 minutes before the lecture starts and I can leave 20 minutes before lectures start and still get there on time.. so travel time is insignificant. If you go to the union a lot like me it's obviously a bit nicer to be in Beit and not have to stagger home down Queen's Gate at night. Also being around Prince's Gardens means you're minutes away from Knightbridge which is nice. Admittedly my top choices were Beit and Southside/Eastside but I definitely don't feel hard done-by living in Evelyn Gardens.

Yeah Garden and Weeks are literally in the same location as Southside/Eastside.. so you're close to campus, Ethos and the union. You also pay a good deal less per week because they're not as nice in general. Rooms and kitchens are perfectly fine but obviously as Southside and Eastside are new, everything is very modern in those - you get 2 flat screen TVs in each kitchen as well as more space.

2nd question varies from person to person. It's impossible for me to predict where you're going to spend most of your time because I don't know what type of person you are. I'm fairly certain no one 'hangs out' in the library but I'm sure plenty of people are the type to go there straight after lectures and work. On an average day everyone I know returns to their own halls after lectures and eats/chills there. Later in the evening if I'm meeting friends at the union or going out to some club I'll walk back up to campus. Staying in my room too much drives me crazy so I keep myself busy with social stuff. Around half the people on my floor in halls spend loads of time in their rooms working/****ing and to be perfectly blunt I pity them because they don't actually seem to do anything interesting - they just get up, go to lectures and come back to their rooms for the rest of the day.

It's more like the first picture. I have even risked getting weird looks from my neighbours to take a picture of my bathroom for you..

So there's a toilet straight ahead, one perpendicular to it and a shower cubicle on the far right. There is another identical bathroom down the other end of the floor. If I go down one flight of stairs, between my floor and the one below, there is another bathroom with 1 toilet room and 3 shower cubicles. There is also a separate bathroom which is more similar to your second picture - it has a sink, bathtub and toilet.

Honestly no one cares how long you take to shower. If you go to the bathroom and someone else is using the shower, you go to a different one and take as long as you want then return to your room. Nobody is going to hang outside the cubicle for 40 minutes waiting for you to come out.

 LMAO! You can't tell but I'm litterally crying with laughter here  Max LAD points for you, and some rep for good measure  I appreciate it anyway, so thanks for that. That's actually not too bad! What halls are you in btw, can I ask? And are the bathrooms about the same in all of the halls? Also they don't have weird showers or anything do they, which restrict all the hot water you can use and stuff? Because I had a really nice en-suite room when I was in Southampton but they had the worst showers EVER, one second it would be boiling hot and then the next it would be freezing cold and if you kept fiddling with it for too long, it just got stuck on semi-cold. :frown:

Ah, that's okay, I'll take your word for it that I won't be holding everyone back with a nice long shower, I'm getting better though. And I'm guessing you're a guy? :s-smilie:

Quick question- Roughly how much money do you need per week to survive? (Food, social etc) I know this varies for each person but how much is sufficient?

I just applied for my student loan so I'm trying to work out what accomodation i can afford

The nearest Halls are always the most oversubscribed - that would be: Beit, Southside, Eastside and Garden/Weeks. The next ones in line would probably be the
Evelyn garden halls.

So...when would it be the best time to apply? :s

You get to choose accommodation, yes; though I'm pretty sure that you'll be emailed the stuff later than those who've firmed ICL. Usually they email accommodation info to those who've insured Impy around August; but I've heard it might happen earlier.

(looks at question in disbelief...) Really? REALLY? *facepalm*

Anyway, ASAP - that is, as soon as you get your accommodation application email (which gets sent out in May onwards. Harangue ICL if they don't.) And make sure you get it in before late July as per what the website says, otherwise you might well end up being told that there's no room in College and get given info on hunting for private sector accommodation.
I just realised what ICL stands for after lurking 18 pages in this thread :s-smilie:
