Guys, Arab states are not just investing in the tallest building, its only one of the things,
Abu Dhabi is building the first and biggest ZERO emissions city in the world, theres a lot of investment into research and "knowledge cities", Saudi Arabia recently produced its second Saudi made car Aseela, these people are getting back on track, but you guys are choosing to ignore the other stuff and focus on how ridiculous you think building a tall building is. The regime has its fault but things are changing, give it time and you'd see a massive Arab federation streching from the Persian Gulf to the Atlantic Ocean,, and then we'll tell China .. " China where's your dragon now ? "

Your rant doesn't live up to the facts. I live in the UAE by the way.

To claim that Dubai or anywhere in the ME is environmentally friendly or zero emissions is ludicrous. If you drive along main roads in Dubai/Abu Dhabi at night, you'll see sprinklers a metre apart to keep the grass in the middle of the road super-green - in a country that highest the highest per-head carbon emissions in the world primarily because it has to de-salinate all its water. Abu Dhabi has huge green parks near the promenade with multiple permanent fountains with absolutely noone in them. Buildings are cooled to practically sub-zero temperatures. In the office I use at Abu Dhabi, it isn't possible to switch the lights or air-conditioning off or lower it at night.

RE: prestige projects like this tower, it is simply a case of GCC governments having more money than they know what to do with. Just look at the Burj Khalifa: its a prestigious building, next to the largest shopping mall in the world and near the Dubai World Trade Centre. But its still half empty and making a huge loss, they can't let the offices! A mile-high tower from Saudi will be even worse. Its a bit unfortunate that the super-powerful GCC governments waste money like this given the size of social problems, particularly in Saudi.

RE: a massive Arab federation, you guys are going to have trouble when the oil runs out. Its very very difficult to do business in the Middle East: it takes 3 months to set up a company, and you can't sell products or do business without paying an unsackable local partner a massive wedge to do so. Not to mention that locals tend not to work past 2pm/3pm. The Middle East has a lot of catching up to do.

"It will take a staggering 12 minutes to reach the top of the £12 billion building in the escalator.

The megastructure will boast a staggering 12 million cubic square feet of interior space - 12 times more than Number One Canada Water in London's Canary Wharf."

When did I say anything about Dubai? read about Masdar City in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, this is one of the positive projects in the region that people tend to ignore..
Masdar City is a new 6 million square metre sustainable development that uses the traditional planning principals of a walled city, together with existing technologies, to achieve a carbon neutral and zero waste community. The city is located in east-south of Abu Dhabi, beside Abu Dhabi International Airport. The city will be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses, primarily commercial and manufacturing facilities specialising in environmentally-friendly products. The city will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology.

I was talking about the UAE in general, and mentioned Abu Dhabi three times. Masdar city is great, but is hardly a knock-out given how un-environmentally friendly the rest of the UAE, especially Abu Dhabi, is!

Well, yea I didn't say it was flawless, but there is change going on without debate, the speed of that change may be debatable though

I'm impressed this is going ahead - the UAE had to pull out of its similar plans because of the financial crisis.

If it gets built, i will go to see it.

If you build it, they will come.
That is one badass building. People likening it to a penis probably have their own phallic obsessions...
I like how it is as tall as the moon.

Guys, chillax. Don't know about other people, but I get really excited when I hear our species is again trying to push the boundaries of engineering and construction.

Chill. Are we talking about the world's tallest building or are we talking about governments?

End of the day, I think it's nice. They're making cities of the future. But Bless them, I use to live in Saudi and I do miss their wackyness. Jeddah is a nice place to make a building like that, Jeddah is wacky thinking about it...they've got the most weird roundabouts known to man....
Saudi Arabia's culture and politics are indefensible to any free person.

The only reason they can blow this much cash on a giant penis is because they don't have to spend it on their own people.
Fantastic news for those of us who like tall buildings. Although since Burj Khalifa is still ~70% empty, this is going to be a white elephant on a scale never seen before.
Bleh, crap.

Can't wait for their oil to run out, then they can finally be brought down to earth. They could be researching alternative energy sources, but no, the people doing this will be dead / independant once the energy **** hits the fan so they keep building these monstrosities.

Lol'ed at the subliminal "this building is so tall it's as high as the moon".
I just dont see the use of wasting so much money on this project that will be a white elephant. This money could be used to fund so many other things. Development to the country, development to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina. Or hell, even fund universities or put the money into some research scheme to find new sources of viable energy, find cures for cancer. So many other things

You can't wait to see people suffering? What a great person you are!

All countries in the world spend vast amounts of money on things people don't agree with. Our nuclear weapons cost more to maintain than this, so at least they get something vaguely useful out of it.

(And not aimed at you, but I find it pretty revealing that people will go on rants about Arabs etc. then only clarify that they mean the governments after they have been challenged. There is a very big difference between a dictatorship and a group of civilians - if you have to clarify which one you were talking about then I struggle to believe you are genuinely concerned for their welfare, as opposed to just making a rant about Arabs in general).
Awesome, love it!

Every time I hear one of the gulf countries spending like crazy on an epic project, the song "We gettin' arab money" immediately starts playing back in my mind

No, I can't wait to see obscenely rich oligarchs forced to be sensible with their money, rather than blowing it all in a one-off unsustainable burn.

Learn your socioeconomics.
The building looks like a "point" and its "point"less to make it. Get it..no..
I am going to be a qs in that...................someday................ hopefully.............. maybe.
