To be honest, if u think u can get a high bmat score, apply to ucl because if u can get an interview, ull probably get an offer even if ur interview isnt very good. They give offers to lots of people given an interview. Imperial's quite hard in that area.

ye someone else said apply for UCL, but did they want you to take all your A2 exams in the summer i.e no winter modules ? I dont think i would do very good in English, my writing skills are not great and i go to a welsh school , so the only English things i have ever written was GCSE english course work. Stats show that pupils from welsh school perform worse in the BMAT and UKCAT. How did you prepare for the UKCAT.

lol i started revision last week, cos we got last week off from school, but last 2 days i haven't been able to revise as much as i hoped, i can't motivate myself to revise physics, it's sooo dull!! :fuhrer: i'm definitely gonna take UKCAT, as the only BMAT university i'd even think of applying to is UCL, which is wishful thinking anyway  our school makes us do critical thinking/ gen studies as well for AS as part of our AQA baccalaureate, so if i get below a C in critical thinking, i can't do an EPQ.. probably should have taken my CT books home over the holidays then...:colondollar:

We only just started our easter hols, so I feel I have an excuse for only just starting..
You're probably just like me but next week..!!

I havent even started physics yet.. although the exam is 1 week after the others, so I'm telling myself its okay.. but I should really start today (hopefully!).
And yeah, physics is so boring... some of the stuff thats in the syllabus, it like 'why did someone care enough to discover this?!?' :K:

At least with UKCAT you get your results before you apply.. so its a lot less risky than BMAT... what is the point of setting the BMAT after the application deadline... whats the advantage to the unis?

Luckily we get a choice between EPQ and critical thinking and general studies in 2nd year.. I'm definately going for EPQ but theres an application process blah blah blah.. and basically if you dont get the EPQ you're stuck with crit. thinking or gen. studies.. neither of which I can be bothered with

Where?

At the local hospital, It's only for two days but I get to follow around a consultant and watch some procedures

Gonna try some more places for voluntary/work experience soon.

 is he/she a surgeon? I got to shadow (putting it lightly) a consultant anaesthetist and saw tonnes of cool surgeries  :yep:

To screw candidates over, so they have to pick from a smaller number - if everyone played to their strengths, universities like Oxford and UCL (and others that love the BMAT) would be royally f**ked.
I think he/she's a surgeon, the organiser just said they specialised in breast surgery but I'll be watching lots of different ones. xD

edit:

Just received an e-mail, he's the head consultant guy for surgery at the hospital  so I better man-up and make sure I don't do anything stupid like faint during an operation xD

He's also a lecturer at the university I want to go to :O so that might be very helpful to be in his good books

Wow... lucky sh*t

but then again, when I was on my work experience placement, I met a surgeon who operated on the Queen  (he did an arthroscopy on her right knee I think)

xD Well I have to meet his secretary and take it from there, and I got told I'm following a breast surgeon consultant, and he's the only one there so I'm guessing it'll be him
I guess I am pretty lucky xD though I would have been happy with anything they could arrange

Yeah, I understand you completely :yep:

Have you got anything else lined up over the summer or whenever (in terms of work experience or volunteering)?

I'm hoping to do some at a children's orthapaedic clinic nearby, though there might be some issues as I used to be a patient there *facepalm* but I was discharged quite a while ago - if not I'll find somewhere.

I've applied at a museum but they haven't gotten back to me, and I tried at the same hospital I'm doing my work experience at, but you have to be 18 to volunteer

There's millions of carehomes locally, so I'll probably try there.

Which reminds me, people of TSR, what sort of things do you do at a carehome for voluntary work? Feed people? Play games with them? Help them move about?

Cool, what happened?

Good idea, I'm supposed to start my volunteering at a care home next week so hopefully I can find stuff out as well

Nothing really, I was just in splints for having dodgy feet for about 14 years  Though the person I'm going to ask isn't technically a doctor, so maybe doctor-patient confidentiality won't come into it? ;D

The carehome I went to only had people with dementia though all of them were at different stages, I used to help with feeding, handing out tea/snacks, assisting with simple games or encouraging group activities. I basically helped do all the tasks that the workers do except for toileting.

Ah thanks, that's sort of what I thought you'd do.

How often/long do you do it each week/month/day - I don't know what I should put down hours-wise when I apply.

I don't do it anymore, but I used to go weekly for around 4/5 hours. So from mid morning till around 2 or 3pm. I guess that way you get to do quite a bit, but depends with the care home, you could quite easily do all of the things I did in fewer hours lol.

Don't prepare too much it's am aptitude test so anything you do will probably not make a difference.

Lolwat.

Leicester don't care about UKCAT. As long as your lowest mark is at least 570/900. I barely prepared for ukcat, and got a high score. Don't prepare too much it's am aptitude test so anything you do will probably not make a difference.

Leicester do care....they take your lowest UKCAT score and then score it accordingly...if youve got a low UKCAT sub section then you need to do extremely well in other sections to get an interview....anyway, their application procedure may be changing for 2012 entry. Xx
