Clinical physiology at Leeds, WHERE TO STAY?

I have just got a letter through today confirming my offer and explaining about how apply for the hospital jobs etc... I'll sort that hopefully, but what I am unsure of is where to apply for accommodation wise?? Anyone recommend anything?

Obviously due to the course being more placement than uni some people may want to live closer to the hospital but i really want to live in some student accommodation near the Uni...
please help

Look for private halls in Leeds, these are usually near the unis but not directly on campus...unless you were thinking of privately renting a flat or houseshare?
I've got an offer for the same course  I'm thinking of applying for either Clarence Dock ( nice but a bit away from the Uni and hospital, though it does have parking and since we might have to commute anyway, that could be helpfu!) or The Tannery (closer to Uni and hospital - if we get lucky enough to be at the LGI! - but still nice, don't think quite as good as Clarence Dock though - no gym, not as nice a communcal area, area around the halls has more students but next to a very busy road and housing estates...). The way I see it, I can apply to halls and then not take the place if I decide I'd rather get a place privately somewhere else but at least it gives me the choice, so if it turns out that I end up in a hospital in Grimsby or somewhere, at least I can choose that that point.

Yeahh, i had a look at Clarence dock, that one defo looks the nicest!! I did hear from somewhere that they try to organise the students doing healthcare courses (and medicine) together for accommodation so then people with similar schedules are together.. not sure how they would sort that though...
Thats a good idea though, I'll keep that in mind

Yeah, I heard the same thing, I think they can see what course your doing so they do try and get similar people together and if you have any other preferences (e.g. want people of a certain age group) then you can specify that in the "other" box and they can try and take that into account too (though obviously whether they can fit with it depends on who else is around to put in the flats).
If the course is still similar to mine, where you're full time at work most of the time, DON'T LIVE IN HALLS!

You'll be doing roughly 9-5, so when everyones going out and raving at nights you'll have to be going to bed to prepare for work, having lived in halls as a full time student I would have hated to work normal hours and put up with the noise, mess etc!

The only problem with separating myself from other students that I can see is the social aspect: I do want to make friends as otherwise I will be pretty much completely alone in a strange city. I'm worried that if I don't live in halls the first year, I'll miss out on this, as we might not mix very much with other students otherwise and may only be able to socialise with some of the other students on our course (due to where our placements are, there may only actually be a few of us living in Leeds and others may choose to live away closer to placement). The way I see it, as long as I am in a halls where sleeping hopefully isn't interrupted, it is probably the best way to make friends at University in the first year. After the first year, hopefully I will have made friends and can live elsewhere. How did you find the social aspect of Uni with the demands of your course?

So will your course be 9-5 at work then one day a week at uni / block weeks at uni?

I live in Wolverhampton and my course is split between Nottingham and Leicester, but I live near to three of my best friends off the course so I still see them quite a bit, I also made friends through work and by joining a drama group so the social aspect is fine even tho i'm not in halls!

We will be at Uni 2 days out of 5 and at placement in one of the selected hospitals the other 3. I'm certain the days on placement will be full days and I would assume the days at Uni would be as well, though I'm not certain about times for classes. It's certainly something to think about - I really hope I will make friends easily and that there will be plenty of lovely people on the course (at my interview day there seemed to be plenty of friendly people) but I still worry that I'll end up being very isolated!
I was just offering advice as having lived in halls I would have HATED a 9-5 job as the noise went on so late at night. And the study environment wouldn't be that great either.

Maybe try and find a house with some second year students? They'll be a lot calmer but you'll still be able to have a good social life?

I am kind of worrying the same thing, I can imagine myself getting annoyed if everyone in my Halls are out every night and I cant because of placements etc. Thats why I am hoping that the accommodation I choose also has clinical physiology students (or students from similar courses.. physiotherapy or medicine) I do want to have a good social life at the Uni too

I've applied to Clarence Dock (might need a car and it has good parking) but if I'm one of the lucky few who gets a Leeds placement, I might ask to be switched to The Tannery, which would mean I could just walk everywhere instead. There is an "other" option when you apply for accommodation - in this I have said I would rather be placed with people on similar courses, so hopefully that will mean it will be ok if they can do that!

Ahh right, yes them 2 places are where I am looking at, The Tannery looks the best in my opinion. I havent applied yet but now you have said that I'll defo include that in the "other" then. Ooo I'm getting excited, are you on that "yougo" thing that UCAS has set up?

Yes but it's very quiet on there so I've only posted a couple of times and nothing recently  I really like the look of the Tannery, just think it could be an issue if the placement I get is in Grimsby or something! (if I'm one of the ones lucky enough to get a placement at all! :s-smilie:) but hopefully I'll be seeing you around

Ha, very true but they said it wasn't used very much, plus I'm more likely to go if it's right there rather than dragging myself across town to one and back again  even if it's just for the cardio stuff now and again it's better than nothing on those occassions when the main gym is just too far away

Also... stop stalking

Ha, I can't do sports (not group ones anyway, I'm fine with things like swimming, snowboarding, running etc. but those don't tend to count  give me a bat/ball/frisbee/whatever and I become a very dangerous person to all those around me) so need the cardio, though the walking from CD may be enough anyway! We'll have to see :colonhash:

i just noticed you told me to stop talking :colonhash:

Ha i see. I'm very competitive otherwise i get bored. I've been to the gym 9 times since last summer so the gym wasn't an issue anyway, it was the 11pm bus, tho you'll be drivin. Awesome bar too

It was stop Stalking  and yeah, the bus is definitely going to be the worst part about living there.
