On TSR, every university outside the Russel group is underrated by most people here.
Overrated: UCL, LSE, Bristol
Underrated: Sussex

I reckon a good rule of thumb for the "overratedness" of a university, not so much in terms of how the university rates itself but how its own students and alumni overrate it, is how much its students and alumni have to engage in constant arguments to 'prove' that their institution is in fact great, showing league tables or some other stat that puts them on par with institutions which are generally regarded as above it, or showing that they are higher than others that might be considered as 'rivals' in the same league.

You never see Harvard grads trailing round the internets wanting to prove to everybody that Harvard is better than other institutions. You don't even really see the Oxbridge grads on here going round feeling the need to 'prove' Oxbridge's superiority to Leicester or Hull etc.

The SOAS haters are a good example. Whenever you see someone, at one of the London institutions, going on about "well my institution IS better than SOAS!" as evidence of how good their university is....seriously nobody outside of the University of London cares! But you see this a disproportionate amount of time on the internet, especially from students at UCL or KCL, they always want to tell you that their institution is better than SOAS lol.

But the whole essence of an institution being overrated is that its reputation is inflated. The general consensus on such universities would not accurately reflect their actual quality. In asserting the status of a less well-regarded university, appealing to league tables would be justifiable, as these are based on objective criteria.

The people whose institutions are underrated have to fight the uphill battle; they are the underdogs by definition. So they will inevitably spend more of their time fighting their corner and backing their claims with evidence.

Lol @ Warwick being overrated?

Out of curiosity, could an ex-poly ever break into the top 30 of a 'Good University Guide'? A couple of them have been significantly moving up the rankings in recent years e.g. Hallam and Trent. Before anyone slates me, I'm not saying they will, I'm asking if it's possible....I come in peace.

Surrey, which was a polytechnic but got its charter in the 1960's, has got into the top 30 and even higher. In terms of 1992 entrants I believe that Nottingham Trent will eventually get in there.

Go to aston, its the best business school of the 4.
Obviously I can't comment with too much accuracy as I haven't been to every University in the country but this is how I see it.

In the UK:

Overrated - London Unis (mostly by anyone on TSR who attempts to rank the prestige of UK Unis), and Oxbridge simply because the stratospheric expectations most people have means it can't avoid being overrated.

Underrated - Scottish Unis generally apart from St A's which is about right IMO. Dundee especially and Edinburgh less so.

Internationally:

Overrated - Any very large University way above its UK rank because of research and factors like "Number of International Staff Members".

Underrated - Smaller Undergrad focussed Universities such as St Andrews and newer ones like Warwick.

Not saying this is correct just my opinion.

SOAS has haters? I don't think most people have even heard of it, let alone care about it enough to be a "hater".
Ex-polys are probably under-rated just because they carry with them a stigma of unworthiness or something because they're newer. I just can't see how you can look down on somewhere if you have never been based on a few statistics that are meaningless to the individual.

My good man, you said SOAS only teaches Oriental and African studies. That is incorrect, there are a number of other courses such has politics economics and blah blah.

SOAS only teaches or courses mainly concentrating on Oriental and African studies.

Same diff.

Bottom line= they are not very good at what they profess to be experts in.

+ waits + for the inevitable so call top 10 in Uk for O & A .

kekeke.

I can't really discuss about that tbh. But I believe it is one of the top 3 especialist schools in the UK(the other two being LSE and Imperial)

HAHAHAHAHA.

Can't believe you took the bait. Hardly anyone falls for that old trick you must be really desperate SOASS alumni.

Very stupid anyway, LSE does econ and politics, ICL is sciences, nothing to do with O & A studies.

Pretty F'g obvious.

In any case SOASS is theoretically ranked ' 5 ' but that is 5 / 12 - so it's pretty carp and even moreso when you compare to world Unis who do the same subject as you would have to.

ASS don't stand a chance vs, Beijing U / Taiwan Nat U/ Tsing Hua/ Tokyo U/ Korea NU etc when it comes to Oriental Studies.

They are monkeys

In research terms Plymouth is the one that has come closest. At the last Research Assessment Exercise it ws the one ex Poly that broke into the top 50 research Universities on the most authoratitive and sophisticated examination of the results (Research.Research). It didn't show up so much on the newspaper lists because a much higher proportion of staff were entered from Plymouth than any other ex Poly, and that quite key feature does not figure in the newspaper listings.

Having said that it seems unlikely that any of the ex Polys will really break into the top 30 on any proper assessment of quality - especially as research, for a University, should be the key indicator. At the same time, from a student's point of view there may be far less difference than many think between a top Uni and an ex Poly in learning experience. If you have a department full of lecturers with PhDs or good research profiles, then they are certainly good enough to give a learning experience for students as good as a top unuiversity where many lecturers may be diverted from the teaching task by the huge emphasis on research. The only trouble is that some of the ex Polys probably don't employ PhD or research active staff routinely, espacially on weaker academic subjects.

But, say, if you did Sociology or Criminology at Middlesex, or Psychology or Social Work at Plymouth. I would guess the experience and standards have no real difference from the highest ranked Universities

What bait? What trick? I cleary said I cant arguee with you because you are right  and I'm not a SOAS alumni. And I know what lse and imperial teach; what i meant is that soas is best for humaniities, lse for social sciences and imperial for science.

And ofc soas cant compete with those unis, they are like oxbridge in their own country...

also, no one is saying soas IZ TEH BEST UNI! or comparing it with other unis; only that it is an underrated instituition, something that you dont seem to understand. Its like saying york's history departement is very good, but no one is comparing it with oxbridge or kings. Do you have some bad past with soas?

Ps: sorry, im using my phone so if there is any spelling mistakes or sentences that make no sense i will edit it when get home

I think the University of Chichester is one of the most underrated unis and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned here. I spent some of my degree there and am pleased at how its crept up the league tables. A small, good uni.
I'd say University of Hull is underrated. The city doesn't have a good reputation but actually has a great nightlife and they're ranked quite highly in lots of subjects - I've heard really good things.

I'm not in Hull, I'm actually still doing AS-levels (and hull will not be one of my applications - not good for maths :P) but I live nearby to hull

Not only soas cant compete with those unis, neither can oxbridge, all Chinese/ Japanese/ Korean studies in UK will fail in comparison to the U's I mentioned.

That I assure you and that will put SOASS right near the ass end just like their name.
