Warwick or Imperial for Maths?

Always wanted to know what the general concensus was when it came to which one people would prefer...

if you had unconditional offers from both Imperial and Warwick for Maths..

Like Cambridge, Warwick is quite synonymous to maths, and maths to Warwick, like Cambridge.

Warwick has a dedicated facilities for maths, which is fantastic..., and a deep pool of brilliant maths scholars and professors in their department.

coventry is definitely dreary and depressing :wink:

personally, both are excellent maths departments but youd get more contact time at warwick as far as i can tell. at imperial, it sounds as though youre thrown in at the deep end and left to try and swim without much help..

Warwick university isn't in the centre of Coventry though. It's situated in the rich outskirts and is surrounded by great scenery and actual trees... ACTUAL TREES. It is a peaceful setting, unlike the urban chaos of a London university.

For me it would have to be imperial because I would want to be in London. Warwick can be a little boring once everyone is living in leamington spa...

I would choose Imperial over Warwick for any subject EXCEPT Maths. I've heard very negative things about the support offered to Imperial mathematicians- they're pretty much thrown in and left to fend for themselves, struggling to obtain the 2:1 they need. IIRC there is also a lot less choice available in the Imperial course (I might be wrong about this though, so check). As a result, despite Warwick's Maths course being similar/slightly harder compared to Imperial Maths, and the students being of a near-identical calibre, the exam results for Warwick Maths are actually a lot better.

My maths teacher (who was doing his 3rd year at imperial just 2 years ago) says that while it's a great research centre - the actual teaching and help you get is poor. He said the lecturers seemed to care much more about what they were doing in their own time (research, dissertations) than putting time into planning proper lectures.

I'm still visiting both for open days and will see what it's like. But as it stands it looks like the maths department at Imperial (talking undergrad only here - not their research etc) is quite poor while Warwick is supposed to be very strong in its maths department.

Not true... I live in leamington spa, and it is not boring! It's only boring if you're a boring person who can't be bothered to go out and socialise...

We have loads of options for nightlife including stuff around Leam, back on campus, Coventry or even Birmingham if you want somewhere really big.
There's always lots of house parties going on too, and at this time of year BBQs etc.
There's loads of open spaces for sports/sitting around in summer, much like Cambridge.
And not forgetting all the sports clubs and societies which hold frequent socials in Leam!

I've been up to leam a couple times each year to visit friends and I'm sure there is plenty to do and plenty of interesting people, all I'm saying is that relative to central london it's a little less exciting.

Not dissing warwick here - its just a comparison.

It is central london.. so hmm....the bars and stuff + london night clubs
but a campus university must be amazing... soo many people to meet, so many societies to join. :smile:

its a personal preference...

tbh doing a maths degree at either means you're a maths badass.. :biggrin:

I turned down Imperial for Warwick just this year. I can't be bothered explaining why right now though; this has been done to death so perhaps use the search function.
