A+ is a good entry level "I can fix computers" cert. Network+ and Security+ are also pretty worthwhile. And the great thing with them is that you can learn them all pretty inexpensively from home.

The certification exams are pretty standard - you do them at a ProMetric test centre.
You can find the exam costs here: http://certification.comptia.org/Training/testingcenters/examprices.aspx

The exam prep takes as long as it takes you to get through the syllabus really.
