Being a student at the University of Exeter?

Yh i would rather be on campus.. what's Rowe like? It doesn't look bad but I have to say I don't know much about it. I mostly want one which will be lively!

I don't know many people from Rowe and don't really know much about it. The few people I know in it seem to like it. Sorry I can't be much help.

medicine is really difficult, I've got two friends who didn't even get interviews and they had decent marks and everything.

I think I like Mardon, and then probably one of the Exeter Halls, but as they seem to be quiete over subscribed, I might choose Birks Grange or something. :smile:

Apparently theres an accomadation guide somewhere on the website, so I'll take a look at that first :smile:

I'm in Mardon this year and it is amazing - really friendly people, a beautiful building and good facilities. It might sound weird but it has really wide corridors which means its really easy to socialise. I've met some people who were there last year and the year before and everyone always seems to love it! It's quite hard to get into it so if you do want to then I would advise putting Hope and Lopes as your second and third choices as they're apparently even more oversubscribed (they're also really nice).

There is no "social handicap" for living in Lafrowda, that guy's original comment was pretty unfair and far-fetched, which is surprising seeing as he seems to live there himself.

I made some great friends in Lafrowda, and because you share a flat with so many people you become friends with them and their course mates and their course mates' hall mates etc, its great. I found my social life was all the better for large flat-sharing, as opposed to be holed up in a small corridor or a small flat of 5/6/7 people as you'd find in the more expensive accommodations.

Anyway, as Sam rightly straightened out, anyone who judges you based on your halls isn't worth knowing. First year is just first year. In second year you can move out to private accommodation.

I never noticed a lack of diversity in Exeter, but then again I didn't go around counting or worrying myself about it, unlike some who clearly do :rolleyes:

The South-West in general is not known for its diversity, unlike places like London and Birmingham etc. Exeter can't be criticised for its geographical location.

Well most of the people I know in Mardon put down Hope and Lopes as their second and third and I think it's because they are more oversubscribed that we got into Mardon. If you put down something else which is less popular, such as Holland for example, you will most probably automatically be put there. Then again it's always going to be a bit of a gamble and some people get put in accommodation nothing like the ones they've put down. If there's somewhere else you really like the look of then you could put it down. Wherever you end up I'm sure you'll have a great time :smile:

Im looking at accomodation for exeter, i'd quite like to be in catered halls, so i was thinking mardon/holland, but what other ones can people recommend?? there are so many to choose from!!
also, im studying drama, and ive heard that the hours can be a little long, so does anyone know whether it would be better to go self-catered so i have more flexibility??

I've firmed Exeter for Law :smile:

I've gone for Rowe House, St Germans and Birks Grange Village (in that order). Are they okay, I mean the pictures look good and I saw Rowe House on the open day which looked lovely, but you never can tell really ... What do you reckon, bad decision/good decision??

I've firmed exeter for philosophy (AAA) eek. Havent even started sorting out accommodation, I hope I'm not too far behind :/. Is self-catered a hassle would you say? My parents are convinced that if I go self-catered I'm not going to eat, but I really don't like the sound of catered. And are there many older students? I'm concerned that I'm going to feel old (will be 20).

Having been here many years I can say the Law department is somewhat lacking. Also prepare for the sheer scale of the building works, which have upset a lot of people. Totally depends what you want from the place.

Self-catered is definitely better than catered in my opinion...the quality of the food in catered varies and can sometimes be quite poor. Also, set meal times would be quite annoying, especially if you have a 5pm lecture (not unheard of) or participate in extra-curricular, which could lead to you missing your evening meal, or can't be bothered to get up early for lectures if you don't have class. This means you're effectively chucking money down the drain and having to buy food to make up for missing meals you've already paid for.

Also, why are your parents worrying, when surely you'll eat when you get hungry? That is all students do anyway...sleep, eat, do a bit of work, go out then repeat cycle. You'll have to learn to cook for yourself at some point, as after 1st year there is no catered option at all.

About half and half. If you're a deferred entry applicant (as I was) you're practically guaranteed a single room. If not, well it's a lottery! Go for it.

Well, I guess self-catered gives you flexibility when you eat, purely because you're making it yourself, but it is so nice to be able to wander into the dining room and it to be made for you! And the dinner times are quite flexible - 5:15-7pm - so even if you have a lecture that doesn't finish until 6pm, you've got plenty of time to eat! I would also recommend Birks Grange and Penny C - Birks is exactly the same as Holland, but at the bottom of the hill, rather than the top (I'm convinced this is where all the 'holland hate' spawns from, because they are right on campus ;D I have friends in Holland who are nothing like the stereotype, but know people in other halls who are...) I've never been in Penny C, but I've heard it's nice :biggrin:

Mardon and the Exeter halls, ie Hope and Lopez are apparently very over subscribed (I put those 3 down, didn't get in any)
