But they were smoking the same crack as the writers of the Guardian Law league table.
Everyone else puts it around 15 - 21st of the ones announced this year, 18th - 31st last year; variety is nice, but to be that radically different just seems like an anomaly, which Sussex have plastered across their advertising.

Yeh but then so many league tables place nottingham and sheffield low, very low in some like mid 20's.
its awesome, also academically, its 79th in the world, above york, leeds, manchester and even LSE so id say its pretty good
LSE is unfairly penalised against by the methodology in the world rankings because it is a specialist institution and is relatively small. In terms of international reputation, it is a level below those uni's you mentioned (except for Leeds and York to some extent), especially LSE.

Its a brilliant university. LSE of course has an excellent reputation but in the world rankings that were published in may 2011, it was placed above all of the universities i mentioned, and those rankings take into account academic excellence, happiness of students, quality of teaching, quality of area etc
I was about to firm my place for Sussex (other one being Keele) until I read this thread ! Just wondering, how is life on cumpus anyway? Is social life centered on campus (house parties , SU etc) or more in the city? which I can imagine at Brighton I have to admit that I really liked the 'campus community' at Keele, but I cant visit Sussex anymore (late offer) would I find this at Sussex as well?
And could Sussex really be called 'top'? especially compared to Keele?
It has no money, and it has been laying off academic staff, and evicting the SU shops in order to make way for a "high street experience" on campus by building a supermarket, and it is building restaurants and stuff, so its priorities are a bit warped - money is the highest. There are some excellent lecturers in the English department at least, and they're all very into what they do. First year is pretty easy going, one essay a term and a couple in the holidays - it isn't a high workload so far. Their official anti plagiarism strategy is to get more of the assessed work done by group presentation, cos if people don't write any essays they can't be plagiarising them. That's Sussex logic. There are rumours that it might merge with Brighton Uni. The campus is okay, quite cramped, not the friendliest, most of the people are pretty nice and there is copious amounts of dope. Most of the societies are fairly inactive but there's plenty of clubbing if you like that sort of thing. Since the 24hr bus got introduced into town the SU's done very little on campus apparently.
It's okay.
I hadn't noticed it was shaped like a cat til this thread.
An essay a term?
****ing hell, I do more than that as a secondary school student.
Sussex is worse than I thought.
This is one of the reasons why Oxbridge are better than Sussex - you are expected to do at least 1 essay a week.

Slackers.
Tbf that's fairly common at a lot of universities. Most of the things I wrote were written as a hurried rant and while I stand by some of them I retract others. University's more about reading and working in your own time than school is, as one day you may find out.

There's plenty of house parties and the bars have events like Eurovision last night etc, and they tend to be pretty busy. Most people end up going to town though as you'd expect with Brighton down the road. Campus is pretty fine although can get quiet at weekends

I'm shocked.

Yes, because the people who go to university are really passionate about their subject and spend hours reading, writing and contemplating about the topic they are studying. Yeah, they rather spend extra time on their work than having sexual intercourse with girls and becoming intoxicated.

I'd rather go to a university where the students were capable of spelling 'university', tbh.
It really isn't as bad as I made it sound. Read Gemini89's posts for a slightly more balanced opinion. I regret ranting. Half of it's *******s really/applies to most universities.
It's my fault that I chose to do the wrong course and many of my other problems were totally personal but influenced how I felt at the time. Don't be put off. Seriously.

But what is it actually good for if it claims to be really good for subjects like bio/chem and 8th in tables/79th in world.

it's a known fact that uni is generally less work than sixth form at school is, and depending on what subject you do, you probably won't get alot of 'homework' because you're supposed to be doing your own reading as you go along in your specified subjects.
and there is NO WAY you can compare oxbridge to sussex, in fact to any other university, oxbridge is known to be in a whole other league to other universities so there's no point comparing it?!!?

They deserve to be negged, I was a bit of a dick.

Are a lot of people going home during the weekends?
I liked sussex when I went there. I firmed it even though I had an offer from a much 'better' uni (top 5) Hopefully I will get in. This thread doesn't scare me
