Congrats to everyone who has received an offer!!

Has anyone heard what the start date is, I have a feeling it was either meant to be 1st of September or 1st of October, does anybody have any ideas

For me, it has been provisionally set as 26th Sept. Not sure if this is for everyone or not!

Hey,

Is anyone hoping to apply for a genetics post in scotland? I know the recruitment process is completely different than in england, the nhs education for scotland website says the recruitment advert is expected summer 2011 and has been saying that for about 6 months. Last year they didnt take anyone.
Just wondering if anyone knows whats happening this year.

That was from the trust who phoned me shortly after my recommendation email. I was supposed to be presenting at a conference [cough] on holiday in America shortly after the start date and was told I'd need to take it as annual leave if I still wanted to go.

Finally getting round to posting on here after the excitement of the weekend ...

I got offered Genetics in Birmingham! :biggrin:

Anyone else around who has been offered Genetics (or any other specialism in Birmingham!)? I'm going to be relocating from Scotland to take this post so it's a fairly massive move and I don't know anyone down there haha!

Also, from what I gather from other people's posts, it's the norm that I've only had my recommendation letter so far, and not heard directly from my Trust? I'm somehow still really paranoid that something could go wrong ... but I'm too excited not to tell people!

As for the start date, my recommendation letter said it was to be confirmed by the Trust, though I'm sure I read somewhere it was likely to be late September / early October.

ps - To anyone reading this who will be looking to apply next year ... I almost didn't go for it because I was so sure I wouldn't get it, given how high a standard I knew there would be - I have a BSc (1st), but no post-grad qualifications and no NHS experience. I guess I just want to reiterate what others have said ... I think it's more about your enthusiasm, and specifically how you can relate your degree and experience to the person spec. Also, if you can show in the interview that you have done a lot of research and prep (relevant papers etc), this will help! Just my two cents, on the off chance that it may help someone :redface:

EDIT: Is there anyone else who has been offered a position with a BSc only? I know it sounds contradictory given what I've said above, but reading the qualifications / experience of other people who have been successful is making me very scared!! :tongue:

Medical Physics offer, qualifications/experience:
- 2.1 BA Physics
- Doing an MSc Biomedical Engineering atm
- 9 months working in totally unrelated area (sports PR)
- No NHS experience

Applications wise I agree that matching the person spec is the most important thing to get an interview. Interesting to note that the people who interview you won't have read your application (or that was how it came across to me) and you get asked a standard set of questions so you won't be grilled on anything you put in your application.

All my examples of teamwork leadership etc came from experiences at university (sports, societies) and from jobs like bar work. Didn't seem to matter where it's from as long as you demonstrate skills.

I also agree that enthusiasm for the job and doing your research into exactly what it entails will show you are keen and serious about it as a career choice.

I only have a BSc (Biochemistry, 2.1) too but I have been working in a Bioanalytical lab in the pharmaceutical industry for the last 2.5 years. In the application process and interview I was able to highlight similar experiences using my current job (such as following SOPs, developing and validating assays etc) and related leadership skills to my time at university (football coach, other clubs etc).

As many other posters have already stated, it is possible if you don't have lots of further qualifications, you just have to get across how much you want the job and how suitable you are for it. Also when filling out the application form make sure you go through the person spec and explicitly state how you fulfil it!!

I've received the same email today.... on the reserve list! got mixed emotions really... I thought the interview went horrendously so pretty chuffed to even get on the list but at the same time, I know they prob won't even refer to the list because no one in their right mind would turn down a post! Did you get offered a SHA position?

I got offered a Haematology STP in London, and I haven't finished my BSc yet! I do have a year of clinical experience though.

I definitely second you when you say that you need to be enthusiastic and show how what you have got does fulfil the person spec. Also if applying for certain Trusts, may be drop in some key info about that trust, which makes it seem that you have done your research.

I've not heard from my trust yet, but emailed them today to provide identification documents and casually ask about a start date.

Yes I had a phone call asking for permission to request references on Friday. You've not heard anything yet? I'm sure they'll get their backsides in gear soon. You know what HR are like, they take ages to do anything! Don't worry too much! :smile:

Hey is anyone else still waiting to hear from Biochemistry? I haven't heard anything.. still.. and I am getting worried that the Trust that I may have been recommended to may be playing around.. How much power do they have to reject people after they have been recommended. I thought the whole process of having a centralised system of selection was to make the whole process fair.. so if the Trusts still have power to reject people after a recommendation that would be a bit of a joke.

If the trust you are recommended for didn't shortlist you i think the main factor would be your degree grade- some trusts seem to have accepted 2:2s if the candidate had done further studies but other trusts may not have accepted such candidates so still may be unwilling to accept such candidates.

I meet the person specification and have a 2:1 degree in Biomedical Sciences. I also have three and a half years of experience working in a Biochemistry lab. I hope I am just being paranoid because after waiting this long and being told that they are waiting for the Trust to get back to them so they can send me my letter, I do not want to be told that somehow they've screwed up and rejected me.
