Im a guy and taking Nursing this year in University of Birminham (if i get my grades) xD

need 3 B's though which means revision is my bestfriend at the moment lol for the record, Nursing is real good occupation for both male and female. Don't really understand as why people find it 'homo' or odd for a guy to do nursing. At the end of the day, what matters is its something you want to do and not what other people think or say right?

Yeah I agree. It's just a stereotype. Teaching is also seen as a 'female dominiated' job but there are many guys wanting to teach. Although, I would consider Midwifery as an all female job. LOL

I'm thinking of going to Birmingham the city looks cool!

Yeah it really is an overused stereotype loads of guys do nursing now  It is very much like teaching yeah, I think men don't dare go to do midwifery I know I wouldn't want to do it. But I know someone who had a male midwife and apparently he was amazing at his job so if it's what someone wants to do they should go for it

I know of a male midwifery student. You have to do a midwifery package as part of the adult nursing pre reg course too, so you will get some sort of exposure to it depending on how your uni meet this outcome. Mine an online learning package, however some universities make students do a short placement with the madwives.

Midwife means 'with women' so the title works for both men and women. It refers to the patient and not the healthcare professional.

Definitely ignore all these people who stereotype! They clearly don't know anything...
I'm looking into doing Midwifery at university, and obviously i'm not a guy :'), but you get the same stereotypes for this! My friend even thought that it wasn't even possible to get a male midwife, which says it all really...
But yeah, i'm looking at Southampton for 2012 too, it looks amazing!

Male nurses for the win!!!

Apparently learning disabilities nursing has more male nurses than any other branch! But we NEED more males nurses. People who say it's a job that's just for women are clearly still living in the 1950's. Nursing is a respected career that requires a lot of specialist training these days, so even if your intention is not medical school nursing is still a great career path for women AND men!

Mental health and Learning disabilities has more men as a proportion due to the way in which working in a Mental Hospital was viewed and given it;s only really in the past 20- 25 years that we have finally got away from the big mental hospitals it's not suprising that the demographics reflect this. Numbers in Adult /General Nursing are also increasing but there is still a tendency to stereotype and pigeon hole Men in General Nursing into Critical care / ED/ Tertiary services which can end up as a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy - especially if the unchallenged Sexism of some of the older generation of Nurses is not addressed.

Well not many straight men in that profession can't blame them since nurses get called 'sisters', but if you want to do it go for it (look at sig for why)

Sisters are female nurses which are generally in charge of the ward, the male equivalent of a ward sister would be a charge nurse.

Definitely apply if that's what you want to do, don't let childish stereotypes hold you back! Good luck :P

Hi all,

I'm new here and I was just wondering if there are any guys out there planning to take Nursing for 2012 Entry.

hey there

good luck on applying for nursing 2012 i am too  good bit of advice is to try and get as much work experience as you can as its so competitive and dont listen to waht others think just enjoy yoursef and think it will be less competion for the ladies :P. I went to manchester and the guy giving the welcome interview was a male nurse.

Yeah, thanks for that.

I wont stay as a nurse forever. I'm following my uncle's footsteps.
Nursing --> 5 years as an ER Nurse --> Med School(4 years) -->Orthopaedic Sugeon

Most people in my family are Doctors who studied Nursing to get 'more clinical' experience with the exception of my aunti in California who took BS Biology before studying Medicine and becoming an Emergency Physician.

I'm a med applicant and if this is the route you wish to take you must look into the universities you wish to apply for Medicine with as some of them have specific requirements for previous results and even the degree you already have.

e.g. some ask for degrees biology/chemistry based such as biomedical science - many wont accept nursing or midwifery

Some want A-levels matching the school leavers (A*AA-ABB) some including biology and chemistry and all want strong GCSE scores. You will also need to take the UKCAT in almost every case.

It's all well and good saying most of your family have done this, and genuinly good on them - but times are changing and each year it's getting more & more competitive you cannot just assume you will get through this route because your family did you have got to spend some time researching.

I agree with another poster when they said that Graduate entry to medicine is the most competitive out of the 3 routes (preliminary/5-year/graduate) and most of these applicants will have very stong A-level results, GCSE results, UKCAT results and atleast 2.1 in there degrees if not higher.

Also this is a massive route to take, 5 years as you mentioned then 4 years at university then 2 years as F1 and F2 before you can practice medicine. Thats 11 years without you specialising.

My advice : think long and hard about this, ace your A-levels and go for it!

I wish you the best of luck with everything, if you need any help PM me - if this is what you really want, something will work out for you

Nursing is a great career choice for males or females who really WANT to be nurses! I think you'll find that you will not be able to be funded for Graduate Medicine if you have already done an NHS funded degree course. Therefore, either accept that, get some Science A levels and simply apply for Medicine. However, if you're from an extremely wealthy family, you can pay your own fees for all 4 years of the Graduate Medicine course! By the way.....Graduate Medicine is MUCH more competitive than undergrad!
