CHH sounds like the best hall for you. If you can cope without being in catered halls (its a pain in the bum most of the time) then go for Manor.

May I know why it may be a pain in the bum most of the time?

Apart from having to wake early & basically having to travel to the halls for meals,
are there any other reasons?

Because it prevents you from doing anything in the evening. I think I only made it to dinner once a week because I had musical rehearsals, society stuff, was seeing friends outside of halls etc. Dinner is only between 5 and 6.30 (or somethign similar) which doesnt suit my eating habits at all, and breakfast was very early for an arts student. If you dont have lectures in the morning you wont bother going to breakfast. It just ends up being annoying.

I see. What about lunch?

And do you have to consume your meals in the hall building itself?

Also, may I know how much more money you spend on food by going self-catered as compared to catered?

Thanks a lot!

Lunch you always have to sort out by yourself in all halls. You have to eat the meals in the dining hall, you cannot take anything out with you. How much you spend on food is up to you. Some people live on £30 a week, others spend a lot more.

Would it cost a lot more if I were to eat at eateries most of the time as I'm not exactly a great cook!

Just want to have a rough sense on cost of food relative to total expenses there!

If you cant cook, there are ready meals, which you shove in a microwave and pop out again ready cooked. You can boil pasta, sauce, vegetables easily. To be honest, you are going to have to learn to cook at some point, and when you are in first year and no one can cook is a pretty good time to start.

I see.
If I do go non-catered, I'm looking more at putting Goldney down as a first choice, followed by Manor.

Is this a wise choice?
And is there a better 2nd choice in clifton for halls? Thanks!

I am also a student with a firm offer for October. I cannot find Goldney and Manor as options in their website. Where exactly did you find them?

I think they're mostly for undergrads. Not sure if postgrads are given rooms there though.
If you want convenience, then go for Clifton. My friends at CHH aren't overly enamoured with their dining- I think it's best to go self-catered anyway, because you've got to learn at some point how to cook. Also people say you can lose out not being part of the student community at Stoke Bishop, I don't think this is the case at all. I'm at Goldney and we do so much socialising altogether, if anything it's better because there's a more personal feel to it, plus it's nice only having to do a short walk in the morning

May I know if there is anything you can put into your application for residence to give you a higher chance of getting into goldney?
a cheque

Goldney has always been the most sociable hall in clifton. The idea of missing out socially I think is mostly from residents at manor and orbital accommodation. Personally I think you can be sociable wherever you are and have lots of fun regardless of where you live. It's just a matter Pr putting the effort in.
Catered hall with the biggest international student population is Clifton Hill House, as well as the biggest international law student population. (the president and vp of next year's JCR are lawyers) so you'll have returner lawyers to talk to. There are also a number of chinese returners.

If you're not used to walking everywhere, clifton is a good place because it's close to town (compared to SB).

Nope, it's all done randomly now sorry. Just be honest, because then you're more likely to get put into flats where you'll get on with people.

I agree. I'm sick of this "oh my god I live in Stoke Bishop and it's SO much more sociable"- not true! I socialise with people from all the Clifton halls, Richmond Terrace AND Stoke Bishop on a regular basis. I've never heard of any problems from Manor, that being said, I only know people who live in the main building. I think if you weren't in there, it would be.
hawthorns is bangin, watch out for clifton wing though it's a bit of an island
