1) Study on the ecology of a habitat
2) Effects of temperature on the development of organisms
3) DNA amplification using PCR
4) Gel electrophoresis
5) Effect of different antibiotics on bacteria

DNA analysis isn't a core practical

He didnt mention anything about DNA analysis, PCR is a core practical which they CAN ask and gel ELECTROPHORESIS

Brine Shrimps came for unit 6

And effectiveness of Anti-biotic has come in Jan11

So....Guess it's Ecology/PCR this tym?

Oh ok. But the core practicals usually aren't in the normal book. It's usually in the activity sheets/revision guide. So I thought it isn't a core practical.

Unit 6 for international I presume. They do an exam instead of coursework.

You know how in the Jan11 paper, they asked us about the structure of carbohydrates? i think, would synoptic elements are possible?

I think he did the practical exam, instead of the investigation

Does anybody have the january/ june past papers for edexcel?? unit 4. I cant find them anywhere. Also if you have a look at the january 10 and january 11 paper, you will notice they have asked similar questions on similar topics. for examplem abiotic biotic factors, and DNA profiling. So try and compare the june past paper!

DNA profiling came up in jan 10 though. So did Ecology. But the actual exam didn't have like what are the procedures? I think it'll probably be gel Electrophoresis.

All core practical are in the book, they just dont go on about it

I'm putting my money on brine shrimp hatch rates and seedling growth rates.

Ecology in unit 2. That might be there e.g. biodiversity.
Anything synoptic can come up. DNA analysis might involve chromosomes/protein synthesis.

PCR and electrophoresis are practicals that you can carry out, with procedures you have to know. I got the list of core practicals from the edexcel website  I made a list of all the core practicals for every unit and these are the ones for unit 4

Umm yeah! That was Dna profiling!
PCR's still didn't  Evn though Dna's amplifyd thru it and used in the gel electrophoresis to create a Profyl ... Relatd

Ahan, let's just focus on PCR & Gel Elctrophoresis , Ecology too!

Brine Shrimps came up this year! for 6BIO8!
They nevr give the same practical for 6BIO8 & 6BIO4!

Although there's no harm in revising

Just had a quick flick through the past papers...

June 2010 had antibiotic bacteria one
Jan 2011 had a gel electrophoresis question and had a few shorter questions on quadrats/ecology
Jan 2010 also had gel electrophoresis and quadrats

What is the brine shrimp practical? I have no idea :s-smilie: can anyone tell me it step by step? and the one about temperature on organisms?
Reply 318
For synoptic i just hope the Structure of Starch comes
As Cellulose has already comE!

i haven't really revised AS !!
