Easy for you tbf. I'm deliberately not doing my calculations. Need to lack the knowledge to be able to give it the full effort possible, so as not to get complacent/demoralised if my results have been overly good/bad.

Coming home tomorrow.

I don't even know how to do the maths to work it out. Using the formula I thought was right, I need a 56 in years 3 and 4 to get a 2.1 and a 69 to get a First. But that would mean I'd get a First without ever having averaged one in any of the four years, so clearly I'm going wrong somewhere.

Anyone fancy working out for me how much I need in years 3 and 4 for a First/2.1(or explaining how to do it)? The weighting is out of 14 and goes 1:3:5:5 and I averaged a 68 in first year and a 64 in second.

Irrelevant comment, but the fact that third year is weighted "5" is diabolical.

Literally no other uni in the UK is as strict as that.

I know. A lot of unis, it doesn't even count at all, or it's a tiny fraction and based on an essay (which is so much easier than a fifteen minute presentation, however good your oral skills are). Even at UCL, if you're doing a four year course where the year abroad isn't mandatory (so like Classics with Study Abroad as opposed to just Classics or whatever), it doesn't count at all!

The new method for marking language YAs is much fairer than what you have to put up with, but it's still unfair to make one 25 minute oral exam worth nearly a third of your degree.

I don't see why they couldn't base the YA mark on exam results while on erasmus, but have a more sensible conversion chart (maybe 5% lower than the UK equivalent, to take into account you're sitting it in a foreign language). Before this massive change for our year, you had to be achieving the same marks expected of Italian students at the best Italian grandes écoles just to get a 2.1 and full marks for a First. Even ****ing Italians don't get anywhere near full marks.

By my maths, you need 72% exactly for your final two years to get 70% on the dot overall (and a 1st). 58% in years 3/4 if you want a 2:1.

You're a star, thank you! So annoying though- I'm sure I can do better than 58, but nowhere near 72. I hate that you get the same mark whether you get a 60 or a 68 :frown:

I'm so confused about this year abroad thing! I've been told I need an Erasmus certificate and I have no clue as to what that is! And then I don't have a clue what I'm going to do for my year abroad presentation thing! Have you given it much thought?

No thought at all! I assume they'll send up some kind of guide or something to tell us what we actually have to do? Because I will be so angry if it's a "choose your own topic" thing, because I hate vague things and I have no clue what are "hot topics" in Italy at the moment (and they want a title by fresher's week this year, so we haven't exactly got much time to learn!).

No idea about the erasmus certificate. AFAIK I don't need to do anything more at the moment before I get there, but that could just be that UCL haven't bothered to mention it. Have you had any emails about the Erasmus grants and stuff?

And **** me, a 15 minute presentation is going to kill me. I could present for that long in English without massive amounts of notes, nevermind Italian.

EDIT: Just found this. I could cry, it sounds so awful.

Why can't they just let us live?!

I managed to fail two modules and Valencia uni offers me the opportunity to resit them. If UCL don't let us I am going to throw a massive wobbly.

I just found a page of sample topics for this presentation, and it sounds as interesting as A-levels. ie Not at all. Surely every German student in the world is sick of talking about gastarbeiters? The only things more cliché than that are the Algerian War, and muslims for the French students?

LOL at there only being one suggested topic for Italian, and it being about the mafia.

I hope they do let you resit! I can't see why they wouldn't (well, beyond UCL being UCL, I guess).

Ye, I saw that the other day! This is so worrying... I had to give several presentations in German last year and they were awful... I basically felt like a mong speaking in front of the class! My plan is to pick a topic, write a lengthy essay on it, have said essay checked and then memorise it word for word and then nod and smile when they ask any questions! Hopefully Novella will get back to me about the certificate... According to the Innsbruck exchange guide, I need to submit it by the end of the month!

I love talking about the Gastarbeiter LOL... It's the only thing I know anything about! I chose it as a research topic last year LOL...

We've never had to give a presentation in Italian longer than three minutes, so why they suddenly think we'll be able to do a 20 minute one is worrying :s-smilie: Yeah, the "memorise an essay" plan sounds like a good one, but memorising 1000 words or so will take forever! At least I know I can write a good essay though, although I've never had to write one in Italian. I'm trying to formulate some ideas now, but its so hard. Probably do something about Catholicism, because that links to everything Italian lol.

Fair enough if you like talking about them. But after A-level, I never wanted to hear about Gastarbeiter, Atomkraft or the Rauchverboten ever again
I hate the master's way of marking. My supervisor has totally screwed up my project, making it almost impossible for me to get 70%. However I'm currently on an average of 83.6% from exams + essays, so I might easily graduate with >70% and no Distinction as you need Distinction in both project AND exams urgh :frown:

I think everyone does. They should just let us write an essay and submit it beforehand, then our oral would just be chatting about it. If they'd read it beforehand, they could think of some decent questions to ask, rather than the really weird ones my teachers come up with sometimes. After my royal wedding presentation, my teacher asked me what I thought of the Queen becoming head of the Church of England in 1950 which isn't even true in the first place. And after a presentation of South Africa, my friend was asked if he knew some elephants live in trees, and whether he had any interesting elephant facts.

I'm not really sure what the presentation half is meant to be testing, aside from memory. And whether you have sufficient Italian links to get them to read it for you :ninja:

Has anyone applied to do the module in TEFL at the language centre? Any experiences with doing it, and the interview for it?
Hi,

I would like to know few stuff about UCL:

1) How good are the Bartlett faculty facilities?

2) Is the student union a good place to socialise? What about its students nights?

3) How about the societies and clubs? which one do you recommend to join?

4) IS there a UCL gym? is it better than UOL gym?

5) Any tips you feel it can be useful for a new student?

Thanks for your help
Was about to link the above poster to the question thread but there's a dupe post already there :facepalm2:
Hey guys,
I recently received my results n got 69% average (provisional). Since i'm so close to a 1st, i was wondering what is the remarking policy @ UCL? Furthermore is there any way i can appeal for low marks? This is because the lab technician lost my lab book which had 3 unmarked labs! Surely this must have had affected my overall percentage.

Thanks!
