I like rolfes model: what happened, why'd it happen, what now? EASY!
Original post by SuperGirl09
Hi Twaffy

Have you looked at reflective models such as Gibbs Model (1988) of reflection? It is what I have found, the easiest one to use but it depends on you!

What I have done is use good emotive language it's about how you felt and things you would do differently etc x:smile:

Nah see I disagree. It's good to recognize how you feel which is why Gibbs is good- but the point of reflection is to analyze the situation and look at the evidence Nd rationale behind it, bridging the theory-practice linkire than anything. My first year I'd write TONS about what I did as opposed to the analysis section of the reflection- till my tutor told me otherwise lol
Yehh,

you are right, I been fishing around for my notes n stuff.. Twaffy have a look at that and hopefully it should help x

I've been using Gibbs so far but whereas I think I can do a lot for the analysis and evaluation (which has now become one giant section by accident) I seem to be failing at the feelings part, I'm just not sure how to tie each part into each other - if that makes any sense.

I haven't heard of Rolfes before I'll have a look now!
Thanks for the advice
I know what you mean, it's like there is something missing which would make ends meet :P

I don't understand this assignment- first one I'm genuinely confused about..and also the most important!!!

Ok here are the guidelines:

HELP! (Chosen my topic as pain management after talking to my supervisor, however no idea what 'organisational and managerial factors' there are!!!!!)

oooh I get you! probably - defo sounds like it! Ha, brain ache defo gets to you after an assignment doesn't it!

Looking forward to your placement?

This placement I could take or leave, I'm out with the health visitor. I'm not a big fan of community I much prefer wards.

Yeah brain ache is bad, not letting it get the better of me though there's nothing worse than a last minute essay!

I lovved A&E though  Ahh yehh some people I know do last minute assignments and still get decent grades though I know that wouldn't work for me LOL

Costs and availability of drugs, equipment and therapies, for example to ensure we have a pca or epidural pump because there aren't loads of them we have to book them in main theatre recovery, so we have to plan in advance and know if they are going to be required. Staffing and organisation of a dedicated pain service, off duty for them etc. Time to run outpatient clinics and staff availability for them, again, off duty, costs, availability of space to run the clinic. I know my trust has recently emplyed a HCA as part of the pain team but I'm unaware of their role so you could look at the potential issues in managing unregistered members of staff working within the team too if youre going to look at the specialist pain team for example.

Well I decided on

Referrals and use of specialist nurses in the acute pain team
Education of staff
Self-medication of chronic pain patients

Education of staff and the specialist nurses will tie in nicely together.
I've got 7 weeks left but 4 of those are 'Reading Weeks' and such so it's more like 3 weeks and then 4 weeks waiting for results!

I've got a job offer on confirmation of passing, I don't know what I'm nore nervous about, waiting to see if I've passed or starting work.

Aw man i'd hate to wait so long to get results, luckily I get mine in september and then just get to enjoy placement for a bit!

Where have you got a job? aka speciality

Looking for a spot of advice.
This weekend i've found out that my parents may be splitting. My dad has moved out after seeing another woman for months and the family is a mess. Now, i mentioned this to my course mate and she suggested i try get some annual/ compassionate leave from uni. I've submitted all my assignments for the year, its just 5 weeks of placement i have left to go.
I shrugged it off when she mentioned it but every day i seem to wake up feeling a bit worse, plus im not overly sleeping and eating right.

I know its a very personal thing, and down to each individual. Im just not the kind of person who goes after things like some time off etc, but would you? Is it worth it until get a bit straighter? Or should i just get my head down and plod on with work?

Hm it's difficult. Its up to you, if you think your practice and academic work is being affected then I'd suggest speaking to your tutor and taking leave- you can always make the time up in your 3rd year (or not at all actually as most universities go over on their NMC required hours by MONTHS!)

On the other hand if you think being on placement might keep your mind busy- it's a valid choice.

Hope you're ok anyway :hugs:

Can i also just say how excited I am..got myself a job interview at the royal brompton and harefield in london for a cardiac ITU job!!!!!!!!!!! 12th August..SO excited as I feel a bit more ready now and they really support their nurses :woo:
Got my management placement through- Health care of elderly rehabilitation/palliative.

I'm quite happy actually as reading through evaluations it seems they give you your own caseload, management students are made to be independant very quickly- plus there is an element of community nursing which I really enjoyed. Can't believe this is my last placement...I've had some good ones really

Cardiac ward
Mental health rehab centre
Learning disability school
Elective orthopaedic ward
Theatre Recovery
Pain management team
District Nursing
Prison Nursing
Neurosurgical/medical ward
Interventional Radiology department
Healthcare of elderly/palliative care ward

3 years- seems i've managed to get myself a good variety of placements!

It does sounds a good mix, plus your management sounds like someone good suited to needing what you need from a management.
Its amazing how 3 years flies though eh? When do you start you management?
Reply 37
time flies doesn't it. We were allowed to put in a preference for our management placements, and could choose most places apart from critical care or theatres. I did mine on the mau, it was perfect for me as the majority of my placements were on medical wards so I could use the knowledge gained from those placements and it was mental busy on there and I love being busy. If theatre nursing doesn't suit me I may look for jobs in acute medicine.
2 months and 2 weeks to go!
It's going so fast!
Aww..zaki, so quick!

I'm a bit worried about how i'm feeling right now. I've been a bit down these past 2 weeks and I'm not sure whether it's depresion or a multitude of things. Had a bit of an issue with friends at uni- I have a group of around 4 of us, and I'm only really close to 2 of them really and the other two I'm friendly with.

Anyway one of them talks in lectures. Not just the odd comment- but a full blown conversation totally unrelated to the lecture. It was starting to irritate me only because It was the end of the course and we need to knuckle down and focus. I planned on speaking to her about it, and had a quiet word that maybe she could be a bit more aware and save it for after lectures. Only for her to TOTALLY overreact, say that everyone talks, it's not a problem because 'everyone does it' and that if I have a problem I shouldn't sit with them anymore in lectures (despite it affecting everyone sitting behind, and in front..and you can clearly hear her whispers when sat at the front lol).

Because she overreacted I just gave up, sat with other friends and just didn't want conflict. However she's really been on the warpath for the past few weeks wanting to 'talk' about her problems with me, and being really confrontational rather unnecessarily. It's made me so uncomfortable being at uni, going to lectures and just hating everytime she goes to me 'we need to talk'. I'm not her friend- just an aquaintance and we're hardly close, so it seems a massive overreaction. She's really split the group up...and one of my close friends today told me I should just be an adult and speak to her (When quite frankly i'm tired of talking about trivial things, want to enjoy uni without childish arguments!!) and because I started it..it's my fault.

I'm so TIRED and fed up of this...it's so pathetic. However it's really been affecting my mood and bringing me way down- i'm feeling anxious and stressed 24/7 and really lonely that something so small and insignificant is causing a rift between my friends.

Really don't know what to do. I'm missing my friends as I can't speak to them when she's around them as she's so aggressive towards me being near her (and she gives my friends dirty looks for going and speaking too me in lectures!). I've refused to talk to them about it as they shouldn't be brought into the middle as it's a problem between me and her- however she's taken them in and making them choose sides. This girl is 29 years old, can you believe it?!

Any ideas? Just can't wait till my holiday and some time off maybe and I can spend time with my friends without her around.
