You and dnumberwang and many, many others have put forward the same answers, and the only things I can say are that, yes, there are some gaping flaws in the system, but you don't have to get annoyed about it anymore, as it's over, isn't it? It's the same principle as rich people being able to get NHS operations and stuff which they could easily afford by going private, but decide they don't want to, pushing people to the bottom of the waiting list who are desperately in need of the same help and could not afford to go private. Every kind of welfare system will have its flaws and there will ALWAYS be people who exploit it, but does that mean that we should all follow their example? Does that make it okay to do it, if everyone else does? And why should a group of rather selfish people undermine those who genuinely need it?

Julie, I agree. Stuff like that makes a mockery out of people who genuinely, genuinely need the grants and stuff because they will not be receiving any money at all from parents. Like me.

The only people who say we don't need a welfare state are those who've never needed it...

I like aphorisms.
TSR = :grouphugs:

I think we all joined because we're excited about Oxford, and then stayed because we met people who equalled us in insanity.

Wikipedia says fraud is "intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual", and it's an intentional deception for personal gain, so I'd say it is fraud.

I agree! I certainly hope that whatever replaces EMA targets those who GENUINELY need it. It is really annoying for those of us working hard at school and having part time jobs, to have jobless classmates bragging about what they would spend their £30 on this week.

I do, however, take issue with you regarding NHS treatment. Even if I were a millionairess, I would not go private. Taxpayers fund it, and they are all entitled to use it, regardless of their income.

Would you take issue with wealthy people using state schools for their kids?

As a prospective maths student you should be asking if there is rigorous proof!

 Today I saw a proof that the square root of two exists! And one that mn = nm.

If a rich person needs to go to A&E, of course they'll go to the local NHS hospital. If they need lifesaving specialist care they'll go to a specialist NHS hospital.

Most people who go private are old people going in for routine operations such as hips etc.

The NHS is there to guarrantee care for everyone, rich and poor. We all pay taxes to be looked after in our of need so I agree with you.

Tho I do think if you're rich enough to be cared for in comfort, why be stingy?!! =L

Haha I love that kind of stuff. I can't write about how I like it without sounding like a buffoon though...

I should be getting my personal statement back from our head of maths tomorrow. Let's see how much he's destroyed it

Well today with my friend Naomi I was meant to be starting my Multinational Youth Exchange thing with a 2 hour welcome session in Ealing where we all introduce ourselves and stuff. Let me paste you the email I sent to my teacher.

Oh dear... that sounds horrible :frown: so sorry that you had to put up with all this. Hopefully the upcoming week will be better :hugs:

you would still use the NHS if you were a millionairess? your reasoning is that everyone has the right to use it...that makes no sense at all. You would benefit from the better healthcare coming from the private sector, the NHS benefits from having more resources available to fewer patients, you get better healthcare from going private, consequentely, people who don't go private get better healthcare. Ontop of that you going private has helped create jobs in medicine, pharmaceuticals, construction the list could go on and on and on, by going private you're helping economically and socially, and the difference to you (Say you were a millionairess) would be minimal in comparison...it'd make no sense at all for you to use the NHS, and the same goes for the state school question.

Really? How did they decide who to give places to then? I thought it was about your background.

Well the school I go to is awful, with next to no successful oxbridge applications so that was probobly a factor. They also judged it on the personal statement you had to write for the application.

Rather similar to my situation, and I was told not to waste my time even applying! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr..............

However, should I be successful with my Oxford application (given I'm the youngest in my family), my parents will 'separate' for the duration of my course and I'll get megabucks in terms of reduced fees, grants and bursaries.

umm that's illegal. I applied to a free summer school where they knew perfectly well about my background; I didn't lie to the university, which is what your parents would be doing if they pretended to seperate. Those grants/bursaries are for people who need them.

I'm the youngest in my family (5 children) and my parents can hardly afford to send me to university but I'm not gonna attempt to take money like that which should go to people who genuinely need it.

Hey,
From your post on the MySQA thread, it looks like you're the sort of person who can get very worried about things. Are you worried about not being good enough? How about you see what your results are, and if you've got your five As (or AAAAB) decide to apply? It's only one of five places, after all, and if you're considering Oxford I'm sure you're bright enough to get into the Scottish university you like most.
Hello all... Very bored in chemistry class. :frown:

Hello Julie  I'm bored too. I gave up chemistry when I was 15 and I'm very glad I did. Too messy, not like maths which is clear-cut and beautiful.
