hi
ok, i see

I've already had my results...and I passed all the modules!

I wanted to get a summer placement but i've just had an eye operation so i'm recovering from that atm.

Can someone tell me more about biomedical research and what it actually involves? The whole idea i have in my head about it is pretty vague :s-smilie:

I'm a mere n00b but I think it'll be like other researchships where you research a realyspecific biomedical topic. If you're looking on the net, try 'medical research'.

But, biomed is varied at it is so you could be going into things like investigating and tracking antibiotic resistance in bacteria, improving/inventing easier and more accurate tests for things like cancer, diabetes, viral and bacterial infections... I remember Pfizer were looking for someone to operate and study ELISA tests that detect HIV - maybe you could make up a HIV test that gives the result instantly. There's also vaccine research and deployment, maybe you could make a vaccine for the dreaded Ebola and HIV viruses. Then you have anti-viral/anti-retroviral treatments... maybe you could come up with a drug that can cure herpes and genital warts... oh and some good antifungals/antiprotozoans would be a treat.

Non-infectiony stuff: You could produce statins for cardiovascular diseases, better therapies and treatments for diabetes and genetic diseases, microsurgery techniques, obesity and even things like counter-impotence drugs and possibly a cure for male-pattern baldness (if you got that then you'd be in the money)

Oh, and in general, better testing, screening and confirmation of diseases by developing technologies which are easy/quick/cost effective.

Got nominated for science student of the year.

Definately well done!

You got any work experience lined up for the summer?

You need a certificate of competence from the IBMS. Either through a year out in a co-terminus degree, or by applying for trainee posts in NHS labs upon graduation.

I'm currently preparing for it on my placement starting in September this year, so if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask me

Did you do an unaccredited course?

I'm a biomedical science student at Shef Hallam XD
No idea what to say but hey other people and i'll watch this thread

You will like part of the second semester you have to figure out what killed a nurse XD

My bet was aliens but I was wrong

If you have any questions I will gladly try my best to answer them

Has anyone who has completed a Biomedical Course been able to go on to do neurology/neuroscience as this is an avenue that I'd like to explore

And for people to feel my pain past this year with 69.3% - 0.6% off a first grr (oh well only first year XD)

Hey, if you guys are worried about work placements, I would suggest you should start looking now, before its too late. I was planning on doing a placement after my second year but was unsuccessful on a number of occasions. I put it to being really picky, I had my eye on one which would have enabled me to complete my porfolio for HPC registration but I missed out on it whilst two of my friends got it instead. Though, I know another student who wrote to hospitals to ask if they were looking for trainee biomeds and I believe is completing her portfolio at Guy's hospital, so that's always an option, but you'd need to get in early for that and I guess you'd have to be sure that's what you want to do.

I think your uni will let you know of vacancies though right? We had a noticeboard in our building which the PTY tutor would put vacancies up on. And you could always to do Erasmus if that's offered at your unis

So I guess my advice would be to read up on the prospects website, go to your careers department for advice and help in what area you want to work in, start writing up mock cover letters and CV(get the careers dept to help you).
You could even ask your tutors (who I assume would be research scientists) if they could give you two-three weeks work experience in the lab (over this summer) or any data analysis work.

Hey, I was told that you can do via MSc or PhD in the neuroscience field. I was wanting to do the same, but I have a newly developed interest in microbiology and immunology! Since I can choose to specialise in Microbiology in my last year, maybe I could try to combine the two fields together....
Do you think it would be any good emailing local hospitals and asking if I could shadow in their pathology labs for a week or something?

I already miss my inoculating loop lol. :frown:

I feel sorry for you and microbiology
from my experience (atleast with the lecturer I have microbiology is soo dull)
But best luck to you and PhD seems like the best option

yeh, thanks!

Microbiology at my uni is the only module that I could say I enjoy everything covered. The lecturers are quite good to, try to make it relevant and throw in a few jokes, etc. My Biochemistry lecturers were AWFUL, as was the module content.
