I get my exam results next week

Working in an analytical biochem lab over summer.

Start placement in September too (pending said exam marks) cant wait

I've already had my results...and I passed all the modules!

I wanted to get a summer placement but i've just had an eye operation so i'm recovering from that atm.

Can someone tell me more about biomedical research and what it actually involves? The whole idea i have in my head about it is pretty vague

I'm a mere n00b but I think it'll be like other researchships where you research a realyspecific biomedical topic. If you're looking on the net, try 'medical research'.

But, biomed is varied at it is so you could be going into things like investigating and tracking antibiotic resistance in bacteria, improving/inventing easier and more accurate tests for things like cancer, diabetes, viral and bacterial infections... I remember Pfizer were looking for someone to operate and study ELISA tests that detect HIV - maybe you could make up a HIV test that gives the result instantly. There's also vaccine research and deployment, maybe you could make a vaccine for the dreaded Ebola and HIV viruses. Then you have anti-viral/anti-retroviral treatments... maybe you could come up with a drug that can cure herpes and genital warts... oh and some good antifungals/antiprotozoans would be a treat.


Non-infectiony stuff: You could produce statins for cardiovascular diseases, better therapies and treatments for diabetes and genetic diseases, microsurgery techniques, obesity and even things like counter-impotence drugs and possibly a cure for male-pattern baldness (if you got that then you'd be in the money)


Oh, and in general, better testing, screening and confirmation of diseases by developing technologies which are easy/quick/cost effective.

You need a certificate of competence from the IBMS. Either through a year out in a co-terminus degree, or by applying for trainee posts in NHS labs upon graduation.

Has anyone who has completed a Biomedical Course been able to go on to do neurology/neuroscience as this is an avenue that I'd like to explore

And for people to feel my pain past this year with 69.3% - 0.6% off a first grr (oh well only first year XD)

Hey, I was told that you can do via MSc or PhD in the neuroscience field. I was wanting to do the same, but I have a newly developed interest in microbiology and immunology! Since I can choose to specialise in Microbiology in my last year, maybe I could try to combine the two fields together....

You will like part of the second semester you have to figure out what killed a nurse XD

I feel sorry for you and microbiology
from my experience (atleast with the lecturer I have microbiology is soo dull)
