I just a conversation with my mum and now I'm confused. I always thought it went:

University -> FY1/HO ->FY2/SHO -> Reg -> Cons.

She then mentioned about ST1/ST2. Now, I always thought this was just the first two years of your SpR training. However, she's spoken to a FY2 who's told her that it's not and it's seperate. I.E, it goes like the above but with two years of ST between SHO and reg. When did this pop up? I've always said the former in interviews/discussions and I've never been corrected.

I'd have thought I'd have been wrong as he is already in the system but why have I never realised this?

The impression that I get is that the MMC levels don't match up perfectly with the old jobs, so the old SHO overlaps with F2/ST1/2, and an SpR trainee isn't a reg yet, despite what the job title may imply.

I think of it like this:

F1 - provisional registration
F2 - full registration, take MRCS/P Part 1
The CT1/2 years are core medical or core surgical training - so you rotate through blocks to get general experience. Now on SHO rota - generally SHO is anyone who isn't a reg
ST3 - Finish MRCP/S now you go onto 'higher' training usually in a subspecialty
ST-8/9 Registrar grade, lots of teaching, nights/stress.
CCT - then consultant job is you can find one, or associate specialist. Generally SAS grades are reg - ie MRCS/P +ve, not part of a training job.

Now, run through jobs are programmes that are put together from end of F2 to CCT in a specialty - this means they arrange rotations in core and higher training for you over the years generally in the same geographical area with yearlyish moves. This is good because it obviously means you have a job for the next few years - but also geographical stability so you can if you want start thinking about family/houses/settling down. You can of course advance through the grades without run through, but this means finding yourself jobs 'one grade up' - so potentially moving every year to advance through the ST ladder - of course there arn't conveniant jobs every year, so many people end up in SAS jobs - because whilst it isn't formally in the training structure, it does count towards experience, and perhaps most importantly, money. Should you find yourself CCT +ve without a job, you can do associate specialist jobs, although this means that you are technically still accountable to a consultant because you are not one. Oh and I know F1s who take the membership part 1 because if you can do it, it looks really good for CT applications, apparently.

well... i enjoyed the work and clinical learning but i was ill for most of 2nd semester which sucked! i was off for about 3 weeks and had to make up extra hours in my holiday.. but i passed thank god! and so excited for next year cos we do obs and gynae and paeds!!
you excited to start your job? are you shadowing at the mo? and what do you start on? beginning to wish i was there already!!!

I'm at the terrified stage when it comes to the job tbh! Start my induction on Tuesday but feel like I've forgotten everything I've learned since finals finished... (and still have a house full of boxes to unpack!)

yeah recovered finally! just caught a couple of bugs and then caught everything else whilst my defences were down! it was horrible.
pretty sure id actually be terrified if i had to do it! im sure you'll enjoy paeds though :smile:

I've moved 240 miles away from Norwich! (much closer to my family now) I've posted exactly where on my facebook but am trying not to make it too obvious to my new employers who I am on here :p:

That would be incredible - if there was something on the web to cover the basic sciences, then lectures themselves could cover the details, the latest research on a topic and give a clinical perspective on things... At the minute, I find there's not enough time in the hour to cover both properly =\

TED is incredible... the most dangerous kind of procrastination though as it's far too easy to justify watching! :tongue:

I had a summer job (probably something like 10-12 weeks - long vacations) where my job was to move boxes & boxes of financial notes into a new filing system. So I was sat in one room by myself surrounded my boxes with a radio & periodically walked into another empty room to file away. Makes you appreciate doctor-ing! :biggrin:
