Hey there, what about the tuition fee, when do you pay them? and is there any difference for international?

I emailed my college about this just a couple of days ago, asking when International students were expected to pay University Composition Fee & the College Fees...

Don't worry, the way the college bill system works (i.e. the fact that apart from a possible accommodation deposit you won't need to pay for any of your food and accommodation until your first bill is due at the beginning of January 2012) means it won't be a problem that you only start applying for the bursary in October. My college even let me not pay my bills until April because the bursary hadn't come through.

So you'll pay for all your food in college (and you'll mainly eat in college!) using your university card and then get a bill for your food and rent at the end of term. Usually, depending on college, the bursary will get deducted from this bill. I was on max bursary and sometimes had bills that were negative!

You have to pay a deposit at the very beginning, which is about the average termly rent of a college room (it was £1050 for me). You can pay that with your first student loan instalment in October. Then each term's bill is paid at the beginning of next term. Bill includes rent, kitchen fixed charge (~£160), internet charge (~£22), any society meals you've had, hall food (£7.50 a go) and buttery food (maximum is I think £600, but mine tends to be more like £200).

Also I'd like to add that they were planning on halving the bursaries, but thanks to the students kicking up a MASSIVE FUSS they actually increased them. So go us!

I've no idea how it works for internationals, I'm afraid; for home students the tuition fees are paid directly by the Student Loan Company so I've no idea when it actually happens. Your college should send you information about this, though; try emailing them if it's important that you know.

Hi, you start applying once you get there in October - they'll give you all the information you need. The bursary is decided based on your household income (they'll have this info from your Student Finance). So what you need to do is make sure you've got all of your Student Finance documentation, keep hold of it, and have it ready to give to them once you get there. OK? :smile:

Also, in answer to your other question, they definitely won't tell you before 18th August :smile:

A question to those who are going to or studying engineering in Cambridge:
Whats the advantage and disadvantage of studying general engineering rather than a specialized subject in other uni?
Take me as an example :Cambridge or civil Eng at imperial?

I found it hard to choose and ofcourse I like Cambridge.

Well I would have said that the advantage of doing the general Engineering course is that it would expose you to different branches of engineering before you need to specialise. You may suddenly find yourself extremely interested in other branches of Engineering like Mechanical or Aerospace - branches which you may never have considered before!

Also, it gives you great breadth and a broad base, providing (What I would assume is) a strong foundation for Engineering.
From an employments point of view, I would guess that Employers appreciate this understanding of more areas of engineering.

Just a specialised degree gives you insight into that branch of engineering, but engineering can rarely be boxed into purely one discipline. The main disadvantage is that you have no choice but to choose Civil engineering.

As I said in the other thread, you are likely to have to wait until the 18th August to find out. They're very unlikely to confirm anything before they know how many people have met their offers, and that won't be until results day. If you are really worried, give the admissions office a call to find out what the likelihood is, but I doubt they'll be making any decisions prior to A level results day.
