Finally got my contract for Opal! (It got lost in the post...)

Anyone else in E15? c:

A good mate of mine is moving in to E10 soon - I thought Opal were only using that block for second year and above students in 2011, guess not!

Well, I applied straight to Opal and right at the end of the deadline, so they may have just been filling up spaces. Two of the people I know in E are 1st years, but one of the girls in my flat is a 3rd year (I think...)

Ah okay, fair enough. I was in C block last year and had a few mates in E block who were first years too... so guess it's just random. But I think the first few blocks (A, B, C, D) tend to only be first years. So they're usually the loudest :awesome:

Dammit, am I in the quiet no-partying zone? Hmm... Slightly worried that there are no first-night flat parties planned in my block yet (I think there are for A-D already XD)

Are you moving in on Saturday the 10th? You'll be fine for a party at Opal, you can just walk in to any party in any block, it's not like other freshers are gonna get mad and say "who invited you?!" At the little outside bit where every one smokes and walks to the different blocks, there will be countless people drinking and grabbing people to come to their parties.

Also my block was quite dead for freshers, and the friends I made all lived in D block so I spent all of my time there. We'd drink until 6 or 7 in the morning, then sleep, wake up, have lunch at the union then repeat the night again. I miss it

Going to Abertay, staying in keiller court block b
I lived in A block @ Opal last year and it was generally pretty quiet which suited most of us. D block was where the 'magic' happened (mind you, it was also bandit country up there at times... :colonhash:)

Ahhh D Block haha, some folk from school were in there last year
try Keiller Court, not en suite but v nice and they still had places last week. Good luck.

Anyone else in flat 2 of Alloway Halls?
Reply 153
Hey, anyone doing biomedical science year 2? Everyone else I've spoke to are starting first year! I'm starting in year 2 because Ive done an HNC. I hope there's someone else!
[For 2012 Applicants]

Anybody who's looking for 'party' halls, choose Alloway. It's remote enough to get away with things you'd never get away with in places like Opal, even though we had campus security out nearly every night and the accomodation office described us as "the world year ever" :/

Opal is like a prison. The rooms are tiny and dank and the showers are prone to mould as there's very poor fan vents. Alloway, if it wasn't a 30 min walk from uni would be around £500 a month, the rooms are large for halls and the kitchen are MASSIVE - amazing for partys, unlike Opal's tiny little kitchenettes.

I'm applying for Ethical hacking course as an EU student. Hope they accept me or I'll have to hack their undergraduate admissions' databases...I joke, obviously

Anyway, I've heard it's a really competitive course

From what I know, Alloway is a pretty ****ty place to stay at - it's far from city centre so clubbing is a pain, same with walks to uni and they have internet filters - that's what my friends living there say.

I'm staying in Opal and I would recommend it to everyone. It's a bit pricey, but if you can afford it - go for it. Rooms are nice, security guys are very friendly and will solve any of your problems in no time as long as you're polite with them. No internet filters. If anything needs to be repaired you file a fault on a website and it gets fixed within a day or two. It's a 5 minutes walk to uni and 10 minutes walk to Dundee union, the place where you will be spending lots of weekend nights  We never had any problems with parties here, even the massive ones. I honestly do not know how hard you have to party for campus security to turn up... Kitchens are a bit small for 15+ people parties, that's true, and there is no dishwasher so if one of your flatmates is an ******* and doesn't wash his stuff you just wont be able to wash yours - the sink will be full. There's a huge 50" telly right next to laundry room with HDMI port so you can have fun there while washing your clothes.

I've also been partying a lot at Meadowside halls. For some reason it's very popular with international students. Kitchens there are twice as large as Opal's and they have a dishwasher  Rooms are a bit old, as is the building in general and I was told that they also have internet filters. The halls are literally across the street from uni and very close to Tesco/Iceland.

Victoria Chambers - been there only once, the building is rather old, but looks amazing - high ceilings, lots of space in the corridors. Kitchens are about the same size as in Opal, but rooms are bigger. I'm not sure if it's warm enough in winter there because of the high ceilings though. Distance to uni about the same as with Opal, just the opposite direction. If you ever run out of frozen pizza - Iceland is just across the street. Internet filters intact.

I don't know if any other hall but Opal has indoors bicycle parking - this was very important for me.

@isengard1,
I'm 1st year Ethical Hacking EU student. To enter I was asked to score 75/100 (B) in 3 high school final exams - Maths, Physics + one of my choice. I scored 89/88/93 and started packing for a trip  Good luck to you and feel free to ask any questions.
Among amazing things about the course are: hack lab, Ian Ferguson's jokes, Ethical Hacking Society, Securi-TAY and the hackers atmosphere

I'd just like to second what panda said about Opal. We have had security turn up once or twice but the groundsmen are absolute lads and are considerate of the student need to party!

One thing I would say to anyone planning on staying there next year is to try not to break things in the flat. In my experience they can be slow to fix non-urgent problems (one of my friends went from the start of term until two weeks ago without a working heater...) Our phone went missing in Freshers and we were just told we will have to pay ~£400 for a new one. Those are problems you're going to get in all halls though.

In general, I'd say Opal is the best of all of the halls I've experienced, and the parties tend to be better than those at Alloway. That might just be this year though!

The janitor at Abertay is one of the most colossal ***** I have ever had the misfortune to meet, he is an absolute unmitigated bastard. He seems to hate his job, the students and Alloway itself. He makes no effort to be cheerful or give the impression that if there is a problem he can/will fix it. His stance on anything at all going wrong however accidentally is: first time free, after that 50 pounds. This seems to count for anything.

Don't stay there, this ******** is kept alive by his own spite and will probably live longer than you.
For anyone interested in Alloway: The caretaker is generally an *******, I got locked out at 5am and went to his house and apologized and asked him to let me in so I could get my keys. He charged me £30 for getting out of his house, walking over to the flat and opening the door. Other than him, everything else is generally nice  Due to most people being people that love to party, it can get a little messy & food will definitely go missing. The toilets are nice, showers in the shower room are amazing, your room is big & you can move it around as you please (unlike Opal) and the kitchen is huge. We don't get a sitting room area however (unless you go for standard, half of the kitchen is wood, the other half is carpet). And yea the internet is filtered, but it's only stuff like porn, placing bets... and that's pretty much it lol.
