Questions on Singer Hall, Coventry :)

Im just moving into Singer Hall, Coventry soon and just had some questions, any help would be much appreciated Feel free to address questions of your own regarding singer hall or coventry in general, the more info the better it is for everyone. any random info from previous singer residents would be very helpful.

1 - how is singer with bringing your own mini fridges/under the counter fridges?
2 - Is the internet wired or wireless (im hoping its both, prefer wired tbh, much more stable)
3 - ive heard loads of stories from uni mates about having food and other stuff stolen at other uni's, have you come across this at coventry?

Hi I lived in singer last year.

Mini fridges a girl in my flat had one, they didnt mind it.

Wired and pretty slow! depends the time you use it...

People had their curtains stolen, you get Hilfields people apart from that it is pretty hard to steal!! their were cases of people having laptop stoles so just keep ypur windows closed when out!!!

We had a issue with food last year, just label your stuff and allocate a space on the shelve!!! our mistake only happened as at the beginning we shared food and then half way through we decided not to without telling 2 of the girls!

Hey, thanks for your reply, I didn't think id get one at all after a while! I read about things getting stolen in a lot of treads on here so thought it a common occurance in student accommodation. I guess with the food its just about knowing the people you live with, right? Just thought id take a fridge just in case the theft got out of control, as past stories indicate people bring all sorts of strangers home after drunk nights, only for them to trawl through the fridge without thinking twice that they are taking other peoples food! But I honestly didn't think people would actually steal curtains!

thanks for your input, feel free to share any other random information about singer hall, coventry university or the city in general, as im a londoner myself and haven't been there before, so just trying to gather as much info as possible being diving in myself!

Also, would you say a budget of £40 per week is enough to live off in Coventry?

The mini fridge was a smart idea as in our flat one of the fridges did not close properly (you get 2) also there was not enough space for 6 people, speh with the freezer!!!

ahh a fellow londoner, tbh theft highly depends on where aboutd your house is! Its hard for someone to get into the house, so it more than likely if something get stolen its someone that you brought into the house!! but people did have people climb in, luckily I was on the first floor and had a metal gate so no-one could, yay me!!

Expect a lot of people buzzing on your doors!! We had a guy last year from the estate at 4am on a exam day (not the best of the days) so I suggest turning it off!!! Also the door locking! Ahh unless you live in 33 - 42 you get proper doors, with me ours were fire ones so locked automatically, was such an annoyance but hopefully you're not like and retardly locked yourself out your room more than 7 times -_-

Well my flat mate budgeted on £25 a week, still made it out everynight so it is doable just depends really.... food was £15 a week for me and then other expenses like going out etc, but your first loan goes so quick as you go out a lot more....Make sure you go to all freshers events, CARNAGE and stamina! Great night outs!!

oh shoot, I'm flat no. 39.105! lol how bad are the doors there? people say experiences such as yours all make for the university experience really, so ill just have to see what comes my way. I was actually considering Unite accomodation at first, but applied late so it all got filled up Where are you staying for second year accomodation? Also how far is the nearest asda/sainsbury's/tesco?

I neevr found tescos xD its by IKEA, Sainsburys is about 10 mins away from Singer nooooo stay in Singer, seriously you will not regret it! And youget the nice doors!!!

We did online shops for tesco and asda, apart from that with asda you need a car to get there!!

Im living near Bargin Booze (i have stupidly forgot what part its called!) Im about 20 mins away from George Elliot, my main building! what you studying bnext year?

Im doing Finance and Investment, should be fun lol, how about you? guess ill be shopping from Sainsburys then! Even though I was hoping for the odd lidl or aldi for some bargains *sigh*. Are you living in shared accommodation? I've heard the students at cov are pretty varied, how did you find your first year?

Wow impressive I do English and history!!, Im living with two other girls and guy, we all lived in the same block last year! In Singer I was with all girls...but we got really close to the flat downstairs that were guys so was good

I loved my first year, however spent too many nights out and not in so failed a piece of cw so waiting on my resit results long!!

Oh sweet! That's a pretty competitive course. Yeah I heard people end up finding accomodation with others they meet in first year; Certainly sounds like you had a great time! lol. Get sleep much? :P From what I know minor setbacks in first year are common though so dont worry, its the second and third year that have the major impact. how are the lecturers there? Yeah I just found out thats the Business Faculty so im probably going to be in there

Somebody told me that you are only allowed one if you have special medication but i never had anybody mention it during room inspections. I presume Singer Hall are the same as they are both owned by the University but i can't promise you anything. If not, you could always put it in the kitchen and put a lock on it. Or just move it when the inspectors come round (they give you notice). The internet in Singer is wired and about the food stealing; it all depends on the individuals, i'm sure you get it going on no matter what university you go to.

Ooh right, yeah I think Coventry's alright with mini fridges then as i've read of other people taking theirs. Im just wondering how far the main train station is from the uni in terms of walking distance, as ive found the tickets to be pretty cheap (around £6ish to London) so will probably be commuting a lot over the holidays.

Hey, i realise this post is about 6 months after the last one but i was wondering if you could give me some advice about accomodation at Cov. I was looking at the pricing ETC and was torn between singer and priory and the £15 extra for catered seemed really cheap, would you agree?

I have read some posts about how the layout of the priory halls isn't very practical and also how it is really dirty and not well maintained? I was just wondering what your opinion on staying in priory was like ?

I have literally just moved out of singer and actually the block you will be living in i was in 39.201
Singer is nice! The doors are fine on the block i haven't had a problem with them! And as for the mini fridge it should be fine! literally they check your room one a term and tell you when they are gonna do it so just hide it for then
The internet is now wireless and surprisingly fast!
There's a corner shop like 2 minutes away and a chippy too!
Sainsburys is the closest but you can group together with your flatmates and do a tesco online shop.
Yeah train station is like 20 mins away but i usually get taxi as im super lazy haha!
I agree with the turn off your buzzer thing, most annoying noise in the world. I think Singer is the best accomodation as it seems to be the best for socialising! Everyone from other blocks usually come over to singer and in 39 we usually had block parties. You will also have the pleasure of tina the cleaner in the block! She does nothhhiiiinnnnnggggggggg so have fun with that, she is lovely however. Hope that helps

Hey, i'm living in Singer this year but moving out soon. First i just want to say, i completely loved my time in singer, it's such a great place to live in my experience! There was such a good atmosphere and i loved living so close to all my friends, i'm really going to miss it next year when we're all in houses. It's so relaxed living there, compared to some other accoms where you can't bring friends around without signing them past security and the like. As for the questions:
1) I can't say i know for sure, but in general singer are pretty relaxed about most things, i can't see it being a problem. Even if you did bring one, you could easily hide it in the wardrobe during inspection week. We only ever had one flat inspection in my time in singer and we were told when it would be so we could prepare.
2) There's a combination of wired and wireless internet, it's a bit slow but fairly reliable. There has only been a few occasions of it going down, and it's usually repaired pretty soon.
3)I can't say i've had anything stolen at all while in cov. The flats are really safe, all the downstairs windows have bars on to prevent people breaking in, the main front doors and the flat doors can only be opened with a key card and your bedroom is locked with a key so it'd be pretty hard for anyone to get in. As for flatmates, it just so happened that i got a really like minded bunch of flatmates, and we all left each others stuff alone. No milk/cheese/butter theft in my flat. I do know some flats where they had kind of an open kitchen policy, in that they would all share groceries and utensils and stuff and that worked for them.

Enjoy your time in singer, if you aren't from a city (like i wasn't) then it might seem a little daunting when you first move in. It's near a bit of a dodgy area called Hillfields which really scared me when i first got there. But after a while, you'll feel right at home. Have a great first year

heyy i was just wondering if i could ask you about the internet?? i spoke to someone that goes to coventry and they said that the internet is really slow? and that i should purchase the £60 package for the faster upgrade ? isit really worth the money? how is the internet for iplayer and other websites like that as well?
also are the any essential things i need to bring? ive started buying bits already!
