they will re-train you if you don't get a good MCM score, they don't use MCM an excuse to fire people it is to make sure customers are given a good service.

the part of the shopfloor interaction i don't do is offer an alternative when something they wanted is out of stock, like if a customer wanted a £4.78 basics kettle and rss says I have none and there is no scheduled delivery date for the next 2 weeks then i'm supposed to offer a £30 kettle? right. most customers would give me a funny look trying to flog them something that is over 5x more than they wanted to pay.

Thanks, at least I won't have to worry about being fired if I don't get 100% if it happens to me again. I have been told things will be a bit more formal next time (if it happens again) though which is pretty worrying. Knowing my luck I'll have another MCM at some point even though some people on here and some I know say they haven't even had an MCM before. As someone said if they look for reasons to fail you and not give you 100% then do I have any chance at all of passing or will they just be causing me lots of grief and getting me in trouble for very small thing? which would be based on their opinions of friendliness or other very small things.

Is 75% a good score though because despite me being told I failed as I didn't get 100% and being told I shouldn't be proud of it I think I actually did everything correctly and whoever the mystery customer was really nit picked as friendliness is a bit of a strange one to measure. It's difficult to say if someone is being friendly or unfriendly as people seem to have different thoughts on it. My supposed unfriendliness is probably just me being quite shy as I do have a shyness about me, I was unbelievably shy when I was at school but now I've become a lot less shy. I think I'll always have a certain shyness about me though and to be marked down and told I was unfriendly due to this would seem quite harsh and insulting.

It would probably be looked down upon by your manager if you failed an MCM in your probation period. When deciding whether or not to confirm someone after probation period it will depend on a number of factors, not only customer service (although that is important). I set targets at the reviews and if they have hit the targets that I have set (or have gone a significant way to hit those targets) I sign them off. I would only non-confirm someone if I had set them targets and they had made absolutely no effort in achieving them and/or they had done something seriously wrong e.g. been brand damaging on MCM.

So basically since iv just started, with a review with my manager every 4th week. first once will see how your gettting on, set a few targets, 2nd one like see how you have got on with the improvements. 3rd more formal, if you failing to meet the targets set for you then BYE! Is that the method you think the managers use? Also because im new do you think i will be tested atleast once so my manager can see how im getiing on and set targets. Btw my probationary period ends 2weeks before christmas, do you think they will extend this becuase they dont wana get rid of me near christmas and look for a new employee, or will they just make me permananet so they can have me for christmas (if i dont do that bad, get on with everyone and etc...)
^ I have never had one review in 3 years of working there, all stores and all managers are different in terms of how formal and how by the rule book they go.
As for your probation really stop worrying about it! If you are doing a decent job, aren't rude to customers and you attendance/ punctuality is good then you have nothing what so ever to worry about! You would have to royally **** up to be fired.

So if i be punctual, and just do my job with annoying anyone, I will pass the probation?

Also if i fill out holiday request forms, would that be put against me? or shall i wait till i pass the probation then request holidays?
When will there Christmas temp jobs be put up online?

This is the method that we use, we review, set targets and follow up and give feedback. The targets the manager will set you will be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rounded and Timely) so they shouldnt be that difficult to achieve. Very few people fail probation period, however, if you dont hit the targets that the manager sets for your first 12 weeks then they may terminate your contract. Also the time of the year is irrelevant because it is very difficult to end someones contract after probation period. Don't worry about it, you will be fine but just listen carefully in your review and if you dont understand a target then ask!
hi guys, left sainsburys a few months and i want to use them as a reference. Who should i speak to regarding that and how should i contact them?

You would not be dismissed after your probationary period, primarily for scoring 75% on MCM. The company and corporate target is only 80%, so you're just about in line with what the company wants you to achieve.

However, you should treat this as an opportunity to improve; look at the comments on the MCM scorecard, and work on them. Sometimes, the test customer might be in a bad mood, and you just can't do enough. However, more often than not, it is down to the colleague - if you were working at my store, I'd treat this as an opportunity to complete a bit of refresher training with you

This is a great comment and great feedback, what role do you do?

If they made it worthwhile to go to the effort of meeting all the MCM requirements they might have more luck with it.
has anyone else recieved their "love card" yet? lol It's the replacement for the shining star, and your reward now goes onto it apparently. But I forgot to ask at my briefing what form the reward actually takes? Further discount on shopping or something like that? Not in work for another 2 weeks hence why I'm asking on here rather than in work, cheers

I got mine on Monday - even though I'm leaving.

From what I understand from my manager it pretty much works like a regular gift card. I think she said money can be put on in amounts of £10, £15, £20 and £25 or something like that. The most she said was definitely £25 but she wasn't certain that was correct.

It seems I spoke too soon! I got a call from them today and basically the same thing happened to me, i.e., I booked and got holiday but it wasn't on their rota. Apparently its something to do with me leaving but not leaving at the same time as other VAC students? I don't really get it to be honest.
Even though it is really not my fault, it is quite awkward cos they are now short staffed and I think they want me to come, but I can't as I'm actually off on holiday! And they also said I might not get money for this holiday, if I'm not entitled which I don't care THAT much about, but still.
Not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow - I mean call them just to say I'm not coming whether or not you give me money? But they kind of know that already! And now I'm worried this might reflect badly on me, even though it really is not my fault, cos I'm actually 90% sure that I am probably entitled to this anyway considering how many hours I've worked.

Oh dear that sucks.

I spoke to my manager and they checked the holiday on the system for me and said I have 8 hours of holiday remaining so I am taking one of the days I wanted. She did complain I'd left it late though.

In all honesty though from talking to the team leader they never should have said ok to those dates anyway as it's freshers week so they are expected a lot of custom.
I love Sainsbury's. Smirnoff Blueberry is currently on offer, and in combination with my colleague discount and Nectar rewards I got a bottle for £1.90  MY LIFE IS SAINSBURY'S. (for today at least)

Ok, so if i listen to what they say, meet my targets for improvements, thats all i have to do. Btw is there a minimum amount of items you have to scan a minute?

Not usually a minimum but rather a target. At our store that was 21 but I was always quicker than that.

Hey, congratulations on the job but sorry to hear about your relative in hospital, hope all goes well and they have a speedy recovery.

I think in a case like this you should just let your manager know as soon as you can or as you might not have met your manager yet, maybe mention it to the person doing your training as soon as you can but I can't see anyone making you work that day if it's something like that. The trainer might mention it to your manager and they'll sort something out for you.

Good luck with everything and I hope it all works out well
Hey there guys,
I got my Interview at Sainsbury's on Tuesday 26th in the afternoon for a Counter Assistance job and it's my first real job.
Was just looking for a few answers really and thought you'd be the best to ask.

1) What's the interview like? am I almost guaranteed the job or is it still a long shot?

2) If the interview is on Tuesday, around when will my induction be? the shifts I applied for were Saturday 1PM - 9PM and Wednesday 5PM - 9PM.

3) Considering I'm usually never in the kitchen (yet), will it be hard to get to grips with the job? or is it really that easy once they teach you?

3) Any things I should expect from the job? any advice on anything related to the job ?

Btw I'm a student and I move to my university (nottingham) on saturday (from london) so I hope there wouldn't be any problems.
Thanks so much for any help that you may offer.

I just got an auto reject email. Didn't get a high enough score apparently. Oh well.
