Anyone not really feeling freshers?

I don't really drink much and i've never really been to a club before, most of fresher events are based around these two things though :frown:
Anyone else not really not feeling freshers? If so what're you doing about it? :frown:

Hey mate, sort of in the same position, going out is not really my thing but I have tried. Plus the money is running low right now. I'm not too sure what hall you are in but I know that Bill Mo have a few Sober nights and RAG type activities going on over the week to get involved with. Either way I am off campus so I am sort of a bit alienated either way. I don't know how exactly how you are feeling, but personally I cannot wait until my lectures start

Hello, same here - I don't enjoy clubbing, I find hanging out with friends and watching movies far more fun than drinking yourself sick.

So far my university experience has been pretty awful, inside lectures and out. My worst fears about starting here seem realized. I'm pretty ideologically driven and aspirational and my university so far has been disillusioning. Especially now since MIT, stanford, yale and the Khan Academy put up free video lectures, notes and problems for their courses, it's clear how much is missing and I do not want to pay for this.

However, I have just moved out, which is a pretty radical change for anyone and I could just be seeing things in a negative light - nevertheless I am in the process of reapplying for UCAS, and improving A-Levels - the worst that can happen is I loose my £21 application fee and decline all my choices. I'm trying to stick it out for a little while as many people have these troubles, if it gets no better I'm going to drop out. Although, A year worth of your course could strengthen your application.

For me, investigating my options seems to be the best thing to make me feel confortable - read this thread http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1749934 - to know I have the option to drop out and reapply helps a lot. Make sure your read the bit about the finance ! It seems that the fee rises are not as bad as they seem.

I'm also calling up as many people as I can to explain my situation and ask their advice - this goes from family to student support to admissions at other universities and even the people I aspire to work for to see what their take is (on the value of a degree etc)

Join as many societies as you can to find like-minded people - volunteering is always a good way to go
Good luck!!

I'm in elvynn richards, we have one sober night next week. So far, the week's pretty much been pre-drinks, drinking, clubbing. What course are you doing?

I'm doing CompSci, only affiliated to Bill Mo. They are a great hall, its just this drinking yourself under the table stigma that is attached to Universities in England that gets in the way of me enjoying the week. I'd much rather have a social night down the pub.

What are you studying?
I'm not at your university, but I cannot understand why universities don't have anything going on at night for people that dont drink? All the people that don't drink because of their religion, or because of their moral belief, or because of the medication theyre on (and there's lots that interact). I bet if universities put nights on for non drinkers so many people would jump at the chance!

newsflash not all people who go out during freshers or go out in general aim to drink themselves into oblivion. I drink socially and rarely ever end up in such a bad state as you people who don't go clubbing always think people do !

Why can't people who don't like clubbing/ drinking fathom the thought that people who go out drinking don't always end up in such a state and just do it to just enjoy themselves.

It's freshers week .... yes a WEEK just try and socialise and get on with people and make the best of the situation even if your not a fan of it.

who said you have to drink when you go out ?? And nights like this are put on by university because they are it's always going to be aimed at the majority which sounds horrible but it's true.

Personally I had a girl in my flat who was Hindu and didn't drink but still came out with us. Not so much after freshers week but she always made an effort to come sit a socialise with us before we went out and we were all good friends........
i completely understand what you mean :/ hoping this all dies down next week and that its actually possible to make friends with people without having to get drunk.
I did a few of the events, but they really are not my sort of thing anymore. Dont like the drinking games at all too. With the events I went to I didnt end up drinking a great deal and went back early. I really just want to get stuck into my course now, only a couple of days left.

i feel the same way too. and especially cos the games and stuff that bill mo does before going out are rubbish too and so awkward in such large groups too. and everyone who goes out makes it to be such a big deal if you want to stay in, like theres something wrong with you for not wanting to come out

What do you think your course is lacking so much? I'm not sure if it's a good idea to compare your first week to a selection of MITs best lectures..

I didn't think I'd love Freshers; I never really went to clubbing before it, I'm a quiet kind of guy, bookish. My Freshers week is finishing tomorrow, and I'll be sad to see it go, it's been abso-****ing-lutely brilliant. Don't get down about it, you'll make friends there and have a wild time if you so wish.

I'll probably go for the singing itself, although I only know half of the lyrics. Don't know how long I will stick around afterwards though. Plus I have a nice early start Monday morning

I'm in the same situation, the thing I dont like is the pressure people put on you to go out every night with them, trying to make you feel guilty if you dont go. I like going to the pub or out to the cinema with a few mates but drinking, then drinking more, then drinking even more while clubbing before stumbling home at 4 in the morning and waking up with a massive headache just seems awful. I have come to university to study and get a degree, not get drunk and party every night, but I guess that's not true for most people.
The important thing is to be yourself and to not do anything you aren't comfortable with. Some people may dislike you for that but you will no doubt meet like minded people with which you will form good friendships once the lectures begin, and there's not too long to go now:smile:
