Yes please try and sell it to me. I mean, I still like it, but it's so difficult to choose just 4 choices (from about 12 that can accept me). Since you a local, could you tell me what the area is like (especially around the uni)? also, should I be scared to be outside when an Old firm match is being played? :colone:

No problem. The uni is situated in the West End of Glasgow which is relatively affluent comparative to other areas (I am from the East end - much poorer), has loads of bars, delis, restaurants, boutique type shops. The uni campus has a mixture of buildings - the main building is stunning (think Hogwarts), med school is new and mostly glass, some others are pre-fab concrete horrors from the 1970's. Most students get around by taking the underground as is the quickest way to the City Centre.

The city centre itself is bustling with great shopping, museums, concert halls, cinemas, pubs, restaurants. Glasgow is great for live music gigs also. In terms of greenery, Glasgow has the most parks in Europe ! Great transport links to all major cities and is only c. 30-40 minutes away from places like Loch Lomond should you love the outdoors!

As for the Old Firm game, you can be outside no problem but advice is don't wear one of the colours of Rangers or Celtic lest you might get problems from the opposing team. Stay away from Rangers or Celtic bars and you would be fine! Common sense for these things!

i thought i had decided on st andrews but im swithering between there and glasgow, because of the small amount of places at st andrews, and the fact my ukcat isn't definitely safe for glasgow (667.5)

can i ask what your opinions of the course are? :smile:

hi, I've only been there for a few weeks so bear this in mind but so far I am loving it. PBL suits me as I am a mature grad and have just done an MRes so I'm used to self-directed learning but we get learning outcomes and objectives given after PBL and lectures so we know if we are on the right track. Had clinical skills session in week 2 and this was my fav thing so far. Had lectures, a lab, vocational studies, clinicals and PBL so far. Anatomy starts next week and we start with prosection then after Xmas we get dissection.

A few others who are in further years might be able to give you more info but these are just my thoughts a few weeks into the course. :smile:

It is difficult to assess the UKCAT. I had 660 last year and cut-off was 652.5 so I was quite lucky imo to meet the cut-off and get the interview. I had one risky choice in Newcastle and it turned out to be just that as rejected w/o interview as didn't meet UKCAT. Glasgow was always my first choice though. It depends on where it is in your preference list and whether you can afford to take a risk.

i was wondering with the whole newcastle thing, that you can put the option as 'no preference' to go to either durham or newcastle. Are people considering this? and do you think it would be a disadvantage if i put that?

Yeah. as far as I know.
Wouldn't hurt you to put it in early though, with course which are non medicine the earlier your app is in the better.

There are 4 main big hospitals in Glasgow that you can go to plus there is North Lanarkshire which is about 20 minutes outside of Glasgow. You can be sent to places like Kilmarnock methinks which is about an hour away by train. I believe the furthest you can be sent is Dumfries and Galloway which is 2 hours away.

These kind of placements do not occur until much later.

In year one, you visit someone in their home and a GP's surgery. A visit to an hospice and an hospital ward with vocational studies tutor and your group (c. 7 others)is also arranged.

I think if you were to give a totally balanced opinion then you ought to mention the awful all year round weather Scotland has, in particular constant rain which can be quite depressing.The long range winter forecast has to be just like the previous 2yrs with the chaotic snow forecast. You mention loch lomond which is indeed beautiful but infested with midges! and enjoying it in the rain is something you have to get used to.The city as you say has many great bars museums etc but so do most big cities look at edinburgh for example.The Glasgow course it's self hasn't been without it's problems, this is why they have dropped some pbl sessions as the Glasgow medical students were found 'wanting' compared to other medical schools. many of last years tsr applicants hated the glasgow interview due to the unfriendliness of the interviewers (check back and find them if you like) Aberdeen for example has a very friendly interview panel apparently.Glasgow and the west is saddled with the embarrassing bigotry that does not seem quite the same in the east. There is no point in suggesting you avoid certain pubs as it's everywhere. I know I've gone to school in Glasgow all my life!

jk. Unfortunately much of what you say is true re bigotry the Scottish government is trying it's best and campaigns like 'nil by mouth ' etc don't really seem to be working. My mother is English and I'm also embarrassed by the anti English stuff that sometimes goes on especially with football stuff. Having said that I'm definitely applying to glasgow :smile:
