2012 Medicine Re-Applicants Mark I

So you agree there were problems and the uni is making an effort to fix them then that's good.Glasgow was more pbl than other Scottish unis but now that it's reduced the option is there for me if I want. Good on you for being positive about the city,but I stand by what I said in my previous post. If someone is choosing to live somewhere for five years then it's important to know as much as possible about the place beforehand.You've gone with the positives I perhaps have shown the negatives. If I get an interview I will try and secure an offer if the course is less pbl then maybe I "can " convince the interviewers! If it were my only interview I'd have to!

the problem was not pbl as a teaching method or lack of knowledge but one of workload that students felt too much. Responding to issues raised by students is something that hopefully all med schools would adhere to. Evolution of courses is inevitable and governed by GMC guidelines and I'm happy that Glasgow has responded in such a positive way to the concerns of students and changed things for those studying there now.

I'm steering towards Bart's rather than Nottingham for my 4th.... I really do love London. And even though I'm not the biggest PBL fan Bart's really is looking good.

What are you all putting down as your 5th choice? I got Psychology last year but after seeing so much Psychology in clearing it kind of put me off.

I went to London and visited Barts, and actually it isn't in the centre - it took us 15 minutes on the tube to get from the centre to Barts. The campus was nice enough, but I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed because the area wasn't as nice as in the centre of London



Also, fifth choice - I'm trying to decide this now. I think I really just need to decide on a course which I will actually want to do - otherwise I'm worried I wouldn't work hard enough. Biomed is a possibility, but if I can't transfer to medicine, I don't think I'd want to be a biomedical scientist. So at the moment, theres a possibility of cellular and molecular medicine at bristol (that sounds soo good!) or biochemistry, or cellular and molecular biology - or maybe joint honours in both.

My friend is starting his first year at Sheffield with 672.5 UKCAT :P

I was trying not to argue but rather debate with Lookout but it seems my opinion is not to be considered. I was merely trying to help someone decide whether Glasgow suited them or not by giving my honest opinion of my native city. If people would rather I did not try and help then let me know.

PBL is actually really good, reckon I've learnt more from my first PBL than in the lectures combined tbh

And they ease you into it



I'm going to be pedantic here..

1) define centre

2) You're probably talking about the buildings in Whitechapel, in which case that's the Royal London area with the Blizard building etc and yeah, it's east london but you don't really spend much time looking at those buildings, you walk past them to get to lectures in the pretty buildings

3) I'm living in halls in central london (Dawson hall, Charterhouse square, barbican)

4) St Barts is just south of me and just north of St Pauls.. so it's pretty central!

5) Mile End is a nightmare to go to... can't really say anything good about quim-land

Mile End was where I went. I just got off the tube, and was like, ohh, well this is completely different. There seemed to be buildings that were half-built and some that were run-down. I'll be honest, my first impressions of it weren't brilliant. Just not my kind of place - reminded me too much of my hometown :P

Don't know why they were showing you around Mile End... I've only been there twice so far...
Only have anatomy down there on Monday afternoons fortnightly, so gladly don't have to make the trek there often..
