Dear _______________ ,

I am writing this letter in application for the position of Senior Prefect.

The Role of Senior Prefect requires someone who shows great commitment to the school environment and shows confidence in being a major representative for the school. Throughout my five years at _______, I have become aware of the strong community that the school has and as I embark on my final two years of education at the school, I want to be able to have the privilege and responsibility to make a significant contribution to the spirit of the school that will not only be beneficial to me, but also my fellow peers.

A key skill that I feel I can bring to the role of senior prefect would be the ability to work as a leader and also as part of a team. My participation within the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Scheme has further developed these skills. At times when we struggled to navigate towards our final destination it was important for us to work together as a team to achieve our goal. An additional example of where I have shown progressive leadership skills would be within my role as a Young Leader at a Brownies Group that I have been with for almost two years. Within the group, I organize meetings and activities for the Brownies and this presents me with the opportunity to interact with younger age groups. I have also helped on Brownie Holidays which requires one to think on their feet and be prepared for whatever may happen, as working with the Brownies and adapting to their way of thinking can often be a challenge! However it is this challenge that makes me enjoy being a Young Leader even more so, as I get to offer innovative ideas to inspire them. Another strength I believe I could bring to the role of Senior Prefect would be the ability to speak to large groups of people at a time and have good communication skills. During my time in Years 7- 11, I participated in school productions which require one to show confidence in communicating a specific role that you are playing. I was also chosen in Year 10 as a representative for the school at the Jack Petchey Speak out Challenge which was a brilliant opportunity I was given to ‘Speak Out’ to a large audience about a topic I felt strongly about.

In regards to further development of the Senior Prefect Role, I feel that it would be a good idea for Senior Prefects to give assemblies to the whole school, about once a term, to give the rest of the school insight into what they have been doing as part of the school community regarding each specialist role of the Senior Prefects, such as Old Girl’s Society and Parents’ Association. These aspects of the school form its unique foundation and I think it would be beneficial to the younger years and sixth form to be informed about such areas. Another idea I have always had but never had the chance to introduce, would be to have senior Prefects assigned to forms years 7-9. They need not be present during day to day registration, but to have a mentor for the younger years, someone who they can come to with their queries other than the teachers; I believe would strengthen the school community, help form a stronger relationship between the Sixth Form and younger years, whilst also building our inter-personal skills.

In terms of specific responsibilities, my interest lies particularly within the role of Chair of Student Voice. It is often that students have concerns that they wish to raise, be it something regarding house events or the dining facilities the school offers. I feel it is important for students to be able to have some input into improvements to the school to make it the best it can be and this is where my passion lies. This would undoubtedly be a challenging and demanding role, considering the many inputs and opinions that have to be taken into account, however it is a role that I feel I could meet successfully and give a worthwhile contribution to suggestions brought to the Student Voice.

I show great willingness in wanting to offer my service to the school in whatever needs doing with my initiative, ability to work within a team and as a competent leader. For these reasons, I believe that I am greatly suited to the role as Senior Prefect and view it as an excellent opportunity to further show my commitment to the school.

Yours Sincerely,

If you have a unlimited $wordcount$

'I want to be able to have the privilege and responsibility to make a significant contribution to the spirit of the school that will not only be beneficial to me, but also my fellow peers. ' - why - perhaps the school has done something for you?

Perhaps switch Young leaders and D of E around - leadership first, then teamwork

'This would undoubtedly be a challenging and demanding role, considering the many inputs and opinions that have to be taken into account, however it is a role that I feel I could meet successfully and give a worthwhile contribution to suggestions brought to the Student Voice.' Good.

Feel free to ignore, btw

'I get to offer innovative ideas to inspire them.' - such as?
i find it good. believe me, you change it or not, its perfect.

We didn't get a 'word count' as such, just that it had to be one side of A4, which it was. Thanks for the advice, it's really helped

I was also chosen in Year 10 as a representative for the school at the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge which was a brilliant opportunity I was given to ‘Speak Out’ to a large audience about a topic I felt strongly about. Try to think of a different word rather than using about twice

In regards to further development of the Senior Prefect Role, I feel that it would be a good idea for Senior Prefects to give assemblies to the whole school, around once a term, to give the rest of the school insight into what they have been doing as part of the school community regarding each specialist role of the Senior Prefects, such as Old Girl’s Society and Parents’ Association. This would undoubtedly be a challenging and demanding role, considering the many inputs and opinions that have to be taken into account, however it is a role that I feel I could meet successfully and give a worthwhile contribution to suggestions brought to the Student Voice.Try to add to this by stating why your skill set makes you the best person for this particular role

I show great willingness in wanting to offer my service to the school in whatever needs doing with my initiative, ability to work within a team and as a competent leaderIt might be the grammar placement, or just me, but the end of this sentence doesn't make complete sense to me. For these reasons, I believe that I am greatly suited to the role as Senior Prefect and view it as an excellent opportunity to further show my commitment to the school.

Yours Sincerely,

All in all, it's a really good letter! I've added a few pointers on where I think you could improve it, but my advice may not be the best!

Remove the single exclamation mark. Too informal.
I wouldn't worry, they're more likely to base it on their past experiences of you than the letter! At our school no one applied for it anyway, so if anyone had of written 'hey, let be a senior prefect cuz I'm cool' they would've got in!

it is perfect!
I know it's a bit late, but did u become a prefect??

I think it's really good. If that doesn't work they obviously have their eyes on someone else. Not much more you can do.
Reply 15
