I have applied for Scandinavian Studies & Management. There is someone else who has applied for Scandinavian Studies & History of Art I think.

Oh fabulous! Assuming you're applying for Norwegian?

Need to find them! Comeee onn other Scandy applicant. What have you applied for?
Seems that a lot of people have other universities as their preferred option. Why is UCL your last choice? I'd love to go, I'm just worried about the cash situation xD Other cities are just so much cheaper to live in.

I applied for both French and Dutch and just Dutch. I doubt I'll get an offer for either though, but I'll gladly take one from UCL. It's my last choice for a variety of reasons. It's the most expensive, I flat out hated the accommodation, I never received any straight answers to any of my questions. They seem to have potentially the best courses so that's a major upside, but I still think I prefer Nottingham or Sheffield.

I kind of get that feeling from UCL too. I feel like we're treated as if we known nothing because we're students, and the prices in London are just ridiculous

Hahaha, I just found this thread and literally was agreeing with every single one of these posts. I've been feeling offish about UCL ever since I sent off my application. I think I only applied because it's got such a good reputation- I'm starting to already realise that I don't want to live in London, nor does the student life in UCL look like my kind of place. It looks really scary and sort of.. impersonal? If you know what I mean? I just get that impression from their prospectus and from what I've read in general. I don't know though! I'll admit that I haven't visited it yet so this could well just be me over- thinking everything.

That's precisely how I feel. I applied because of the prestige (which was admittedly foolish of me, but I wanted one 'really prestigious' uni just in case) but I think I actually regret it now. I don't know, I just feel like they don't really care. Perhaps that's foolish to say as I've not visited, but the uni doesn't seem to be 'me'. It seems quite clinical and really 'booky' (I know I made that word up, but I mean it looks too focused on literary skills). I get the impersonal vibe too. I love Southampton's approach, they seem to really care about their students and try not to daunt them. When I got a letter off Southampton inviting me for an informal interview they warned me not to panic and that it would be almost conversational and that I won't be grilled, which to me, is the kind of approach I'd want the uni I go to to have. I'll probably sound stupid in hindsight but it's how I'm feeling about UCL right now
I've applied for French and German and also feel a bit unsure about the student life in London. But it seems to have one of the best courses, which is really annoying...

I agree completely. I know I'll love the course, but I'm going to end up in a hell of a lot of debt and I don't need any more on top! I applied because the course looks amazing, but prices are so high there and accommodation could be a bit cramped. I went to London a couple of weeks ago and I felt so insignificant and like I was a real tourist and always would be.

I was, however, at the time, taking pictures of myself grinning in front of The Houses of Parliament.

It's not really the debt or the cramped accomodation that worries me, more that with everything being so spread out it will be really hard to find a close group of friends if you don't get on with the people you live with. I live about an hour's commute from UCL (not in London, in Kent) so I could live at home in second and fourth year, but then I would still worry about the socialising thing. This is all so confusing!

I applied to both Nottingham and Sheffield for French with Dutch. I don't know which I like better yet. I suppose whichever one is kind enough to give me an offer.

I just got the feeling that they couldn't be bothered with me at all and essentially felt like all the answers I was getting from their rep was that there was no point in applying as international student because they're not going to take anything in my application seriously. I only applied because there's only three universities that offer my course in the UK so I felt it foolish not to put UCL as a choice although I really, really would rather not wind up stuck there. I highly doubt UCL would be the only offer I get though.

I just know I wouldn't enjoy it there at all. It's not somewhere I could see myself for three years and that's my main issue with UCL. I want to go somewhere I feel comfortable and I just didn't feel comfortable there in the slightest. I agree they're so impersonal. Even their acknowledgement letter felt very "We don't care about you, don't email us further unless we decide you're worth bothering with."

Hahaha, never seen so many complaints over a university in it's applicants thread before  We're an interesting bunch!

Sorry, only now saw your reply. Yeah, their email service is quite impersonal and cold.

Aha, I'm exactly the same- despite the fact that my gut instinct tells me UCL isn't for me, I still want to get in! And I haven't seen the place yet, so I could go and visit there and love it, who knows... their course is really good. I haven't got the questionnaire yet though...

I've actually just realised we post in almost all the same threads haha! Probably because 90% of them are language related!

Hey,

Who here is applying for Modern Lanuages at UCL? And which languages have you applied for?
I can imagine this is going to very varied considering the huge amount of languages on offer.

I'm applying for German and Swedish...anybody else? I'm a bit of a loner here

hey:smile: i'm applying for German and Swedish too

I've also applied for the same course in Edinburgh, but I've applied for German and beginners Spanish in my other choices since Scandinavian studies is so rare :P

Have you heard back from any of your choices yet? x
Im applying to the Modern Language Plus course in UCL ( Spanish & Management Studies)

Have only received an acknowledgement thus far :s-smilie: getting pretty worried about not getting a questionnaire or an offer by now :s-smilie:

My other unis are King's College, Exeter, York, and Nottingham

Saw your name in the 'Who Quoted Me' and got a bit excited by your Swedishness. xD The exact same course as me? Wow! Never thought I'd see the day.

Haven't applied to Edinburgh - it's a bit too far for me I suppose. I do wish I had though. Haven't heard back from UCL at all, but have applied for German and Italian elsewhere and have offers from Manchester and Sheffield. What about you? If you get an offer, will UCL be your firm?
