What happens if someone who isn't depressed takes antidepressants, because I have been prescribed them for 'depression' but I feel a lot worse now than I did when not taking them, and was wondering if people who aren't depressed who take antidepressants can become depressed?
Antidepressants are regularly prescribed to non-depressed people, they have other uses as well. Antidepressants such as SSRI's (citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine) are also prescribed for premature ejaculation problems and anxiety disorders. Some tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline are used for pain management in people who suffer from chronic back pain or migraines. Bupropion which is an NRI is also used as a smoking cessation aid. Trazodone which is a SARI is also used in people who have insomnia and has also been used to treat people who suffer from night terrors as a result of PTSD.
When used to treat depression antidepressants can take a while to work, anywhere from 4-6 weeks. Typically you will experience the negative side effects before you feel any benefits, so in the mean time you may feel worse which isn't unexpected or out of the ordinary.
If you have any concerns you should speak to the doctor that prescribed them to you, don't just stop taking them as this can cause you to feel worse and you may experience some withdrawal effects.

Thanks you guys... I was asking one of my mates and he scared me too!!! He said that they dont work and something to do with mind control!!!
I have a mate on anti-dp all she said was to avoid prozac and I would be fine...

I know someone whose life was saved by Prozac so don't discount it entirely.

The side-effects differ between antidepressants and, crucially, between individuals. I'm on citalopram and I know people who are on the same dose of the same drug, but experience completely different side-effects. Yep. Prozac isn't great for a lot of people but there some who can really benefit from it.
