A tram is running out of control down a track. In its path are five people who have been tied to the track by a mad philosopher. Fortunately, you could flip a switch, which will lead the trolley down a different track to safety. Unfortunately, there is a single person tied to that track. Should you flip the switch or do nothing?

Depends, if there were 5 mass murderers on one track and a nice old lady on the other then the decision would be easy for me take out the 5 :colone:

. If they were all sound you'd take out the old lady yeh you'd have killed her by your actions but inaction would cost the lives of the others.

Its swings and roundabouts.

You'd have killed her by changing it, but you'd have killed five people by not changing it. But on the other hand if you do change it, you'll have killed someone by your actions. But if you don't change it, then five people will die, even if you haven't been the one doing something. But if you change it, then its your fault that someone else dies...

YOu can't win with that kind of situation - I think the whole point from that book is that its better to kill by inaction than by action, but its not exactly an ideal situation is it.

Either way you're going to get sued and your medical licence revoked lol. Basically you'd just lie down on the track ad die too. :colondollar:

You could argue that in that situation you are responsible for the lives of six people and have to choose between them - the options are either to kill five or to kill one, and the fact that you have 'acted' or not is irrelevant.

Personally, I rather like this sort of stuff. If anyone can be bothered, here's a video about basically the same question (the start at least).

I am applying for Medicine, however, after reading this, I feel so scared now. And especially, once you read the comments, EVERYBODY agrees with it.

Once you read it and the comments of current students, you'll be so so worried and doubting your decision to do Medicine. :s-smilie:

You are re-applying, meaning you've had two years to think about your career choice and you didn't consider that at times it might be a bit crappy? Any subject you choose the current students will complain about workload and exams, equally everyone complains about some aspect of their job... There are still thousands of people that do it and enjoy it though.
All of us get a bit scared sometimes, it's a big decision and will be hard sometimes. You just have to remember the outcome.

That may be American so not all of it is relevant but some of it is so true..

Sleep deprived is the main one. If you get 6 hours sleep then that counts as a good nights sleep :coffee:

Surgeons do tend to love themselves somewhat...

Though I will upgrade the asking a patient if they've farted in the past 24 hours to asking a 90 year old if he was sexually active... he was :indiff:

But yeah... medicine's awesome :awesome:

Oh the one about medics hooking up together just provides entertainment for everyone :colone:

That point is since most people that go to med school are either the top or near the top of their class... it's a bit weird to then find 100's of people as smart or smarter than you

Tolerance for caffeine and alcohol is becoming a real problem... two cans of monster will barely keep me awake anyway and pre-drinks of a bottle of wine is now standard and doesn't get me drunk anymore... just tipsy :sad:

ye, i was reading a book about a GP surgery and he said one of weirdest things about the job is people would come in and nonchalanty discuss the weirdest, darkest sexual activity like they were talking about the weather :P might as well get used to it.

and tbf i'd be chuffed if i could even get it up at 90 :lol:

Considering surgery. Cardiovascular if possible. But I have 5 more years to change my mind :smile:

I really miss fresh pig heart dissections now... Cadaver dissection is great for learning anatomy but it isn't quite the same.

You should have seen our first-aid training event. We had a joint session with hallam. Sheff uni medics vs Sheff hallam nurses. :tongue:

We have competitions between the two universities at least once a week! Interesting how they rank higher than us in courses like business tho... :holmes:

Aside from the lack of the formaldehyde smell, the whole texture of the heart feels different. Back in highschool, we were able to pull back the heart muscles and see the features much more clearly. Whereas now it is clenched into a tight ball with blood clots everywhere. And according to our lecturers, many organs will look slightly different because of how they processed the body. That said, learning general anatomy through cadaver dissections is incredibly helpful. :smile:
