I saw this and I think it is absolutely crazy and completely inappropriate. Worse still that the quoted committee member didn't even know she was being quoted! If there's somebody I can e-mail to complain as means of support then send me a PM and let me know. That's really shoddy low journalism and I wouldn't expect it from the editor of our only official newspaper.

Putting this as public because I'd imagine you're not the only one who wants to complain: [email protected] is the general editor. The more the merrier :yep:

It'll be especially nice if some complaint doesn't just come from active LGBT society members - because obviously we were gonna be pissed. The point is that this crosses a line regardless of your sexuality.

It's this being a personal attack on me personally that gets me. And I didn't know it was being published until I saw it this morning. :frown:

I mean, he's not come out and said that precisely (he can't, we're covered under bullying, harassment and discrimination legislation, so it's taken as seriously as racism/homophobia/etc by UCL) but I'd imagine he'd love to. Plus the comments and the wording of the article itself is pretty rude.

They don't seen to be against the LGBT society itself (it would be quite hard to be against - we have about 600 members :tongue:

) but targeting members of the LGBT society just because they're in the society...?

I'm e-mailing him now. He's on my course (though year above me). I'm not from LGBT nor do I know nearly as much about trans issues as I should but I agree, this is very personal and very unnecessary. It's a pathetic excuse for journalism and I'm so glad you've made it public. I think he should step down.

You are a star. If there's one massive positive to come out of this whole issue, it's that there are some seriously lovely and supportive people out there.

(I'll hasten to add that the initials of the guy responsible for that particular article are SJ - he's one of the editors, but the other one, HG, has actively tried to distance himself from it. Don't have a go at the wrong person :tongue:

I realise I keep saying this, but it means an awful lot.

Obviously I don't think it's going to matter very much if people complaining are members of the LGBT society or not, but if we were the only ones who minded and nobody else gave a toss, it wouldn't be as convincing as if people from a wide range of backgrounds cared :tongue:

I am writing to complain about the short article published in the Pi Diary section of the most recent edition of Pi Newspaper. The article discussed the recent election of 'kerily' as trans representative for the LGBT forum. I have never been involved in LGBT issues at UCL nor am I in any way affiliated with the subject of the article, however I must tell you that the wording of the article was a rude, inappropriate and wholly terrible example of student journalism.
Was the reference to 'man - woman as the case may be' supposed to be an attempt of humour? If so then it was in very bad taste and served little more than to trivialise transexual representation on campus.
Reading this article, I found it distasteful but was at least confident that you had taken the necessary steps to confirm that kerily was happy with his representation in a newspaper which is distributed all over campus. I was disgusted when it appeared that not only had you not sought necessary confirmation and permission to publish this but that the 'quoted' Bethany Rutter (is it really necessary to tell us that she's a woman? UCL students do have half a brain) was not informed of her appearance in the article and had been cited out of context.
If the intention behind this publication was not malicious then I urge you to make a personal apology to the subject of the article and a public one in the next issue of Pi. One can only hope and assume that such instances of desperate and shoddy journalism will not be repeated.

I just... this will be approximately the ten billionth time I've gushed in such a way, but I'm completely taken aback (in a good way) by the reaction to this. There are so many people going out on a limb when they completely don't have to, just because they think it's the right thing to do, and it's amazing.

Please don't take my posts seriously. Every issue that I have with the Year Abroad is to do with me, not the placement itself as such. I had a lot of issues before I took up the placement, and the standard year abroad stress has just magnified them.

To be honest, 'the universities themselves' are basically irrelevant. Universities are the same basically everywhere in Italy, it's not like England where standards and specialities vary massively. Anyone can do a filosofia/lettere degree at an Italian uni if they pass the maturita, so a course at Milan is no different academics wise to a course at Bologna.

Base your choice on the city. Visit as many as possible, during term time, to get a feel for them. I phasise the 'in term time' thing, as it really makes a difference. I visited Bologna in summer and hated it because it was vacanze and completely dull, empty and boring. I went to visit my friend there the other week and it was totally different and I loved it.

Any questions you have about Milan and the uni, I'm happy to answer. I'm a bit tipsy right now, but when I have time I'm happy to write up some specific things I've noticed about Milan/advice for moving here that I would have liked to know before I came here. Just reply here or drop me a PM :smile:

If you contact me via PM I can put you in contact with people in Bologna, Rome and Naples through facebook, if you don't fancy emailing total strangers off the list Novella will give you. I will know people in Florence and Siena from Feb/March, but I think you'll have chosen a place by then?

You know what I can't think of any primary school I went to teaching languages (I changed schools a lot due to moving a lot) - the one private school I went to at that age did but none of the others, I was miles ahead of everyone in French when I started at a state secondary school because no-one else had done it :s-smilie:

It's pretty much compulsory to teach languages at primary level these days. Or at least it was three or so years ago when I did work experience in a primary school. The schools had to have at least one languages specialist on staff. Maybe things have changed/ it was only a trial in my area, but I'm not worried that having an Italian specialism would be a disadvantage as such. More that I could specialise in something else (ie French) that would be more of an advantage. But maybe things have changed again, because at that point languages were still compuslory in secondary schools, which isn't the case now.

It should end up being all over campus. I mean, there was the initial article in Pi which a lot of people have seen, and then the Women's Network/LGBT Forum are making a big fuss, plus a lot of Pi itself is completely appalled, because they don't want their paper associating with this sort of *******s. Apparently some people want to get him sacked, which I wouldn't be averse to.

Considering the long-running spat between Pi and Cheesegrater, I'd imagine they'd love to run something on this :colone:
