Is Cripps on campus? Because I thought on campus had no en suite? Are you catered or self catered?

There are lots of en suite on campus. Soem halls don't have many but some have a lot. Rutland and Ancaster are two that spring to mind. Of course they both have rep for being snobby, partly for that reason. But it is just rubbish.

Yep, Cripps is on campus. You can get en-suite rooms on campus, there's a mix of all different type of rooms. Some halls have more en-suites than others. I don't think Cripps has that many, but every hall has at least some.

And I'm catered. All of the halls on campus are catered. If you want self-catered, you'd have to live off campus in Broadgate Park or something.

So just to clarify: when applications open, do you get to put down your preference of halls? Or do you just put down [for e.g] University Park, Catered, Single Large Study and then randomly get allocated to your preferred type?

I think it's random this year! you don't get to pick halls

I've firmed Edinburgh and now I'm stuck between:
Pollock halls - 50% of first years live here, catered, mixed sex, average £160 a week, all in the same area a 15 minute walk from lectures
Flats - about 150 in each block, self-catered, single sex, average £90 a week, dotted around the city but some close to my lectures (literally jump out of bed and be there)

They both have their pros/cons I can't choose! Anyone's opinions on what they'd choose?

EDIT: sorry for intruding on your thread by the way haha

I know people in various types of accommodation in Edinburgh and all seem quite happy although the more unsociable ones want to be among a cross section of people next year and not only students. I think you can get mixed sex flats owned by the uni a few minutes from George Square. Depends the kind of person you are and what you have been used to. If you are quite independent, keen on cooking you might prefer the self catered but if a bit disorganised maybe halls might be better. Remember too you are stuck with flatmates but the people I know seem to get on well with their flatmates even although some do not socialise very much. Flatmates can be good as a ready made group of friends. If you want to just shut the door halls might be better but halls might also be better for making friends of your own choice. Remember, too, you can have en suite in halls if this important to you. I know someone in John Burnett with a very nice room etc. The people I know who went last September all seem to have got more or less the type of accommodation they wanted.

I'm really considering BGP, I just really don't know! It's too much of a commitment! I don't know if it'd be better to live in halls for the social aspect, but I just don't think I could face eating in a dining hall every morning and evening, I hate to be on my own in public!
(failed to notice this had gone onto a second page xD)

There really isn't any social problem with being in self-catered. BGP is the biggest hall, and there is a sense of camaraderie within the blocks, especially if you're in one of the older ones (tend to be standard rooms, not ensuite or studio- these are in the new blocks, which are a lot bigger). Obviously I can only speak from my own experience, but I've liked living here a lot

I really don't think it'd be less social. It feels like a prison to be told when to eat and you're paying for it! I'd rather make my own food as I like to eat healthy. Plus Broadgate Park houses 2000 students so you'll easily make friends. The only annoying thing is the price which I think works out to £110/week which is grim but I think I'm entitled to grants and bursaries which can pay for it

Thanks guys! I'm glad you said that because I really did want to be self catered... Yeah, god it's so expensive. I get a £1000 each year extra bursary because I attended a summer school at Nottingham for a week, I'm so lucky, so I was considering getting an en suite... Though I have zero family money behind me as I only live with my mummy who can't work much. It's a big decision!

I've got a large single study which is something like £96 a week. The normal studies are a bit less than this. Having no family money behind you might be difficult :/ you're going to have to go for the cheapest room possible unless you have a job or can get another bursary :/ I spend roughly £20-£30 a week on food alone :/

Well I think I read about a Core Bursary? If I'd be eligible I'd get the full 3,000 because income is less than 15,000. Seems like a huge lot, on top of about 3.something grand loan and 3.something maintenance grant from government. I also should get £1000 experience award from Nottingham because I participated in their summer school in July.

So that's like 10,000 which seems like a huge amount, maybe I got the idea about the core bursary wrong!!

Sorry, I have no idea which hall has the most large single studies. I guess they must all have them, but I really don't know. I only know one guy in Cripps with an extra large single.

Definitive answer follows:

Choose a site (Uni park, Jubilee, Broadgate, etc)

Choose a room type on that site

That's it, you don't get to choose anything else and I would strongly recommend you don't just put it down in case.

What else, other than site and room type, would you put down? Sorry I dunno what question you answering...
