Loughborough vs Nottingham
i know many of you may get annoyed with this question yet again hitting the forum.
But i need to settle this before may...Notts has better reputation being a Russell Group and all, it has a new engineering building however i wasn't shown this on the open day, whereas Loughborough has a solid department too, great vibe and a amazing accommodation. Notts is part of the univeritias21 and so there is a good chance of me going abroad. Despite Nottinghams prestige it is (on average, taking several rankings into consideration) not as highly ranked as loughborough. So my question id what uni do you think comes out top? and why? Thanks.
Oh and i have conditional offer from:
Aston BBB
Nottingham BBB/ABC
Loughborough BBB

I was in a similiar situation last year to you about choosing between Loughborough and Nottingham for Engineering. (Currently i'm on an industry placement, and I'm starting at Nottingham in September but I'll try to give you as much help as I can!)
First of all, both Nottingham and Loughborough are highly respected univesities for Engineering. They both have great facilites, research teams, links with Industry and employement prospects. On some subjects, Loughborough may be more highly ranked but for Engineering they're about the same.
Because of this the main deciding factor for me was the campus and location. I fell in love with the green park campus at Nottingham, and the city is really great for things to do in the day. The buildings and accomodation looked really great, and I generally preferred them to Loughborough.
So what you should consider is the location. Loughborough is a smaller town, where Nottingham is a busy and lively city. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty to do in Loughborough with Nottingham and Leicester only short train rides away, but Nottingham is a city.
On the other hand though, Loughborough is a very good sporting university. This wasn't a factor for me as I don't play any sports, but if you do you might consider looking at Loughborough.
So what you're looking at really is do you want to large green campus with a busy city on your doorstep, or a good sporting experience with a slightly quieter town but several large cities nearby?

Also, may I ask which Engineering courses you're looking at for each uni? I'm starting Product Design and Manufacture at Notts, and got similiar offers to you.

What engineering did u do and what subjects?
I got ABC for maths physics and economics and got told to do engineering with foundation at notts.
Anyways I would go to Nottingham, from those 2.

lol but you must understand our situation, firstly engineering is like 90% male, so we don't want to go to a uni where the other departments are male dominant also. I thinks its close to 60:40(male:female) for the whole uni.

I think you're right about the Loughborough figures.
Notts i think is 51:49 guys to girls. So pretty even.

I study in Loughborough and all of my friends from halls are engineering students. It's true that the majority of engineering students are guys but they all seem very happy and they love their course.

seems to suggest loughborough beats nottingham in electrical, civil and mech engineering, often by a good few places. and as you say yourself other studies seem to suggest this too.
obviously different sources evaluate different criteria, but hands down loughborough seems to beat notts on the important topic of graduate prospects.
Who gives a flying toss really about international standing? What people talk about overseas is more related to prestige than performance. unless you are planning to work abroad (as in apply for jobs abroad for foreign firms), all that matters is what the UK thinks of the uni.
and without being funny, lets face it. You are applying for electrical engineering. its hardly gunna be a scene from porn is it? where ever you go, its gunna be rammed with blokes on your course.
Id say there are more than enough girls at lboro to have a crack at.
even if there was a 1:1 ratio, what does that mean? you arent guarenteed to hook up just because theres a girl for every boy.

I based my decision on several factors:

I see that Loughborough has many staunch defenders when it comes to such discussions. And I acknowledge that we can't draw a conclusion where everyone agrees upon the Uni. that is more deserving of a superior placing. In my case, i was scouring for an UK Uni. and i did that with an absolutely open mind. Then, one of my critical criteria was that the Uni ought to be internationally recognised and branded. Because in my part of the world, where globalisation is moving ahead at full steam, it is imperative to be associated to an Ivy League or the equivalence on one's resume. In this regard i think Nottingham fits the bill completely. On the other hand, although I have read raving reviews about Loughborough and have no doubts about its academic credentials, it appears to fall short when it comes to prestige and international standing. It is also commented in several forums that the reason why Loughborough made it to the UK tables is simply because there is a strong emphasis on student satisfaction. Nevertheless, I am interested to find out the general sentiment in England towards the 2 aforementioned Universities. Perhaps you can enlighten me
