This could catch child pornography users and the like, which is a good thing. But would it really help catch terrorists? Will terrorists not simple use a proxy/go via someone else's Internet connection or avoid detection in so many other ways? How will they use this? A blanket search on the word "bomb" on all users and then filter through the results list? It all seems a little unfesable. If they will only target known or suspected individuals, then what's the need of a nationwide database?

Let's hope the government/media is just joshing with us.

Yes but then we're in the situation where someone could be given a Section 4/5 for the most minor of offences (e.g. Drunk and Disorderly or being present at the scene of a fight even if not involved) and thereby surrender all privacy to the Police.

I am writing this as I am honestly shocked at the governments technological ineptitude. I have read an article on the BBC website regarding the new plans to monitor internet traffic. Not only will this cost a great deal to implement, it will make no difference to anyone with even little computer knowledge.
Any filter/monitoring can be bypassed with the use of a cheap/free encrypted VPN. All data is passed via an encrypted connection, which no one between you and the other end of that connection can access or view. This will mean that criminals can avoid detection by this new system very easily, while normal internet users are spied upon.
This seems to me like an unacceptable breach of privacy for a system that will not work.
Please speak out against this legislation for me, and other citizens of the UK.
