On the BSMS website it lists the international tuition fees and says we get a 5% capped increase every year.

In the prospectus it says that the fees for internationals are the same throughout the course.

Which is the correct info? 5% rises are really high and I have to figure out whether this school is financially affordable for me :frown:

If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be most grateful.

I think the way it works is that you sign an agreement with the school at the start of the year as to what your tuition fees will be and these remain the same until the end of your degree. The same will happen to us "nationals", which ensures that if the tuition fees do go up like they did last year someone already enrolled in the course wouldn't have to pay the higher fees and would just stick to the agreed ones. Having said that, don't quote me on this and drop them an email. Or ask on their Facebook page and if they don't know they will find out for you.

I am going with projects abroad in mid may, i went with projects abroad to ghana last year and had an amazing time. who are you thinking of going with?

Ah I dont know, both are really good medical schools but completely different! Just going to have to try and sort out pros and cons of both and decide over the next couple of days.. Ah I just cant get over the fact I have a choice, at one point didnt think I was going to get in this year..! Have you decided between liverpool and bsms yet?

Hey man, for BSMS do you know how placements work? Does BSMS pay for accommodation to far away places? How long are they and how often do they change? Any ideas?

I remember one of the first years that were there during my interview saying something about this and I think she said all the placements were pretty local so either within walking distance or within walking distance of a bus stop. I doubt very much they would pay for any accommodation, because there's no need for it.

Just had another read of the prospectus and it says:
Year 1 and 2:
"The academic year is organised into three terms of approximately 10 weeks each. About 25% of your learning at this stage will be clinically based and will include gaining experience in primary care and community medicine, and in different out-patient settings in the School’s partner hospitals."

So we will be doing 30 weeks of clinical practice each year for the first 2 years. There seems to be about 2 to 3 units per 10 weeks, so having a wild guess that the placements change every 5 weeks so you cover the topics you are studying. Say you are doing "Neuroscience and behaviour" guessing you would spend 5 weeks with a neurosurgeon or neurologist or something like that and then another 5 weeks with a speech therapist. Makes sense?

Don't forget we will also be doing the family studies in year 1 and 2.

Then in Year 3 the fun starts.
"Year 3 starts with a five-week course introducing you to clinical medicine as it is practised in secondary care. At the heart of year 3 are four eight-week, ward-based attachments in the teaching hospitals of the University Hospitals NHS Trust. These attachments are in medicine, surgery, reproductive and child health, mental health and elderly care."
This will be at the Audrey Emerton Building, in Royal Sussex County Hospital.

I went to the hospital and from falmer (the interview building) to the hospital I took a train to the Brighton station and then a bus. Seems a lot but it literally took 20 minutes - max. And I got lost in the process, so its pretty close.

Then we have the elective of 8 weeks in Year 4. Coming to Cambodia or Vietnam with me? :biggrin:

"During this year you will also undertake a rotation of clinical placements in the specialist subjects of musculoskeletal medicine and surgery; ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat (ENT) medicine; infectious diseases, HIV / genito-urinary medicine, and health protection; dermatology; oncology, haematology and palliative care; and neurology and neurosurgery. There will also be a yearlong module dedicated to primary care and population medicine."

Year 5 is when you really start feeling like a proper doctor.
"Year 5 provides intense clinical and professional preparation for your first year in practice after qualification. As a student assistant you will spend 24 weeks undertaking clinical attachments in two different regional locations which include Chichester, Eastbourne, Hastings, Haywards Heath, Redhill, Worthing and Brighton."

These are split into 8 weeks, 8 weeks and 8 weeks. Last 8 weeks we do emergency medicine too :biggrin:

as well as the regional attachment.

And I've just basically rewrote the entire prospectus. Sorry about that. Will try make it shorter in a sec.

It mentions a few cities (towns?) where our placements may be and just looking at the map I can't tell if those locations are far from Brighton or if they are easily accessible everyday. Just wanted to check whether we can still do these placements while staying on campus. As international student, it's really important that I find out all possible sources of spending so I can budget accordingly (bank loans runs out quick :tongue:

)

It should be pretty easy to get to them. Brighton has really good connections, being the capital of summer tourism in the UK you would expect so anyway.
I'm pretty sure you can also get really cheap bus/train passes for the whole year.

Do you not qualify for any financial support? Scholarships?

Yeah, I'm so excited about September!! When are you coming to the UK? And yup, I joined the group. They are pretty good at responding to any questions too, so might be an idea to ask them how far placements actually are as I'm sure they will be able to tell you better than I can.

Apparently, if you've got an unconditional offer your offer pack should arrive before conditional offers. But who knows when that is! I imagine end of April?
