Need some advice guys, Firm Warwick or LSE ?

Hi everyone,

thankyou for reading this btw, i appreciate it. :h:

So to my genuine surprise because i thought i didn't deserve it, i received an offer from warwick for a BA history and politics, and from the LSE for a Bsc international relations and history, i'm stuck on what to firm.

My brother went to the LSE and said he wouldn't recommend it until postgrad, he said i'd get distracted by city life and the cost is immense, so he thought going somewhere quieter where i could concentrate on studies would be best. He also said the lse are good at selling themselves as a uni, i shouldn't be swayed by prestige and they don't care about undergrads there and you are left pretty much alone and i may have a better uni experience in a student bubble at warwick.

I live in birmingham so i'd be nearby my parents (they aren't always in great health and are getting older, plus i'm the last child at home), i'd feel quite guilty for going further away and giving them financial pressure if i went to london, warwick also offer the chance to go to north america which i really wanted to do. But i prefer the lse course.

Any advice from students at either of these universities?

tldr; offers from LSE and Warwick
going to warwick = comfort zone, easier life close to home, get to go abroad vs bro recommends lse for postgrad instead due to city life/cost, but their course is better

I'm such a lazy fool, i probably won't even get 3 As
so I should just firm loughborough and insure reading :frown:

It pretty much is deciding between a slightly more renowned degree with little social opportunities(LSE) ,or a slightly worse (yet still very good) degree with a fair amount of social opportunities.

Me personally- Ive never been that social at my upper school, mostly because 9/10 people are quite shallow and boring. I and probably others on this website want a better social experience when they go to uni, and so I would pick warwick.

Plus as you said LSE would be considerably more expensive. Imperial is very similar and Ive read a heck of alot about students there being depressed and pushed too far. Take your brothers advice, LSE certainly seems like a place for people who live and breath non-stop serious work... which I suppose one becomes more like after undergrad

Keep in mind that warwick isn't a very quiet studious uni either - depending on where you stay in your first year, it can get quite noisy and hard to concentrate in your room if that's where you want to work. But you definitely won't be distracted by city life

(if you choose warwick, feel free to PM me with any more questions)

thanks for your thoughtful response, do you know how your friends are finding the politics course, or history/politics?

i'm so confused :frown: argh

I'm struggling to make the same decision, but Warwick for maths and LSE for Actuarial Science...just can't decide! Half the people say LSE is unenjoyable but the other half say uni is what you make of it...price is also an issue for LSE but Warwick won't be cheap either. Just cant decide

argh you feel my pain

warwick is still miles cheaper than the lse, but i feel like i shouldn't even factor in cost, i should judge it on the course, and so the lse course will serve me better for job prospects :frown:

Going to LSE over Warwick isn't really going to increase your job prospects unless you want to be a banker or work in top tier consultancy, and even then I doubt it..

i don't mean in terms of prestige, i meant doing international relations and history from the lse is a more recognised and noteworthy course over history and politics from warwick, lse is the school for social sciences after all

ah ok.. Well I have an identical dilemma but for Law. History and Politics is still a top degree, but I see your point. I'm not sure how that will even really matter. Employers won't hold international relations from LSE on some godly pedestal.

you got me wrong again, i didn't proclaim it to be on godly pedestal, just that it has the edge over the warwick course as social sciences is what they specialise in and in that sense it's more respected

so where do you think you will go for law?

It's strange..I'm sure you'll know Warwick is a campus university, it's basically like a small enclosed student town, so you may love or hate that really. I really liked it, I prefer it to just being spread around London and being a londoner makes me hesistant to do my degree here. I'm sure you'll be fine:wink: make sure you visit both before deciding!

ha i will do so, but the next warwick open day isn't until the end of april grrr, i've been to student housing in warwick to visit friends, never the actual uni. leamington spa is lovely, coventry not so much, i'm from birmingham, so like you i sort of want to get out of this area and if i go to warwick bham will be the place to go, and i'd be closer to parents.
argh
ok i'm gonna stop fretting and just wait until open days, i probably won't get my grades anyway :ashamed2:

LSE International Relations & History.

LSE has a slight edge over Warwick in terms of reputation, and Central London beats Coventry any day
There are two things to consider:

One, student experience. Studying somewhere small will be very different from living on London, and you should think about student experience.

Two: job prospects. What do you think you want to do after? LSE has a better reputation and is likely to appeal more to employers.

There's a similar thread where someone was deciding between LSE and Warwick for politics and has a poll (if that interests you)...

Her main worry was that she'd have a better time at Warwick and currently lives in London but wasn't too sure as LSE's slightly more prestigious.

In the end she choose LSE and this is what she said...

OK so I made this thread exactly a year ago...and I wanted to post that in the end I chose LSE. I 100% have no regrets - LSE is the most amazing place to be and I'm loving every second of it. The workload is insane - and the uni expects a lot of even 1st years. But its so worth it. The social life is awesome, I've been having such an incredible time. If anyone else is faced with a similar dilemma about lse vs warwick, I have to say choose LSE!! you won't regret it. I certainly dont!! Work hard, party harder
