Went to the admissions day on Saturday having no expectations (was going to firm Southampton) but it ended up being the best one and I firmed it when I got home! Applied for Psychology BSc, and Park Village accommodation-wise (looked at East Slope which was even tattier than it was when my brother lived there 8 years ago!). :smile:

I also went to the psychology admissions day on Saturday and put sussex as my firm when I got home! :smile:

I've firmed Sussex for Economics BSC, I really like the campus etc and importantly the Econ department and new academic building for Economics. However on the visit day I didn't get a look at the sports etc, So is the Sussex gym any good, in particular the weights area or any other facilities.

Or are there any other gyms very close to campus.

Finally I have some friends at and that will probably be going to Brighton uni, so just wondered if it's far from Sussex campus/ do you interact much with Brighton students.

Sussex Uni has two gyms-- the 'old' one in the Sportcentre which has weights equipment, free weights area, cycling machines, treadmills, crosstrainers etc. Basically, everything I needed, just a bit more dated and less of it.

The other one is more hidden away but is new and massive. Two floors, one dedicated to weight machines, a room for free weights and upstairs is all cardio. Brighton and Hove Albion used to train there when I went-- really good gym. Membership will allow you to use either (the old one is closer to the library and train station so I often used there if I just wanted a quick workout).

Membership prices were really good, I got mine at £140 approx for the year and that includes unlimited gym use and unlimited attendence of the fitness classes they have on multiple times daily in the halls of the Sportscentre. That was for Silver membership. There is Gold membership which includes a bit more (such as racquet sports and other stuff), or Bronze which is a one off small payment of £20 when I was there then you paid as you went. Lots of sports team societies if you're into team sports and friends I know who do football, rugby etc. had really good experiences with their sports at Sussex.

Brighton Uni (Falmer campus) is literally just across the bridge on the train station. They tend to come over to use Sussex's pubs. I happened to know people at Brighton Uni and we mixed a lot but there isn't much purposeful mixing between the Unis so I suspect if I hadn't know any Brighton Uni students I probably wouldn't have gotten to know any. But, if you have mates there and they're on Falmer campus then it's really easy to get over to them and vice versa.

Hello everyone - this is my first post :smile:

Congrats on your offers, and decisions if you've made them. I firmed Sussex (for Geography BSc) on sunday morning, after attending admissions day on saturday, with Royal Holloway as insurance choice. I hope I made the right decision...

I know NOTHING about the mobile phone signal, but in terms of accomodation you've chosen sociable areas. Behind east Slope, Park Village is apparently the most sociable, and as Park Houses consist of 12 people per flat i'm sure they're dead friendly too. Park Houses is my second choice too, so I may see you there! I think it would be really exciting to find out which Park House you were in (sad I know haha)

it would be nice to know someone considering the fact that no one else I know personally is actually gonna be attending sussex as well so i'm really excited, but at the same time kinda nervous haha.

Yeah, i'm so nervous about the friend making issue. I just worry about people not understanding me or my sense of humour personally, but I guess i'm just over thinking things :smile:

And in my year i know 2 others who are coming to Sussex. One of them is possibly the most annoying person in the world, however it's pretty unlikely that i'll see her (i hope anyway)

I'm shortly about to graduate from Sussex and volunteer in the Students' Union Advice Centre. If anyone has any questions regarding the campus, accommodation, Uni life in general etc. then feel free to PM me. In my day I was a Park Village resident, for those who are thinking about Park Village as an accomodation choice but am also familiar with most of the others.

East Slope is 'more' sociable in that you are more likely to be in party-central most evenings/nights of the week as it has that reputation and so people from campus tend to go to East Slope to crash houses etc.

Also people usually chose to live in East Slope with those expectations so it tends to happen every year. East Slope facilities are poor, with infestations common in quite a few houses and it was meant to be demolished 2 years ago (Northfield was to take its place). But the SU campaigned against this due to the feeling that cutting out the cheapest option and replacing it with an expensive option would only reduce the number of working class students who could afford to live on campus.

Generally, if you aren't that fussy about mess or noise the room sizes are good (although they do not have a sink like most other non-ensuite accomms), you have the option to share a room to get even cheaper rent and you will have a good time if you like house parties.

The Park Houses are 4 separate accommodations (they are only related in that their naming has linked historical significance) and are York House, Kent House, Norwich House and Lancaster House. They are all fairly similar in size with sinks in rooms and a TV/communal area in each house. York House is also where security are based if you're concerned about safety etc.

Park Village is similar in size to the Park Houses except it has no communal area per house, but rather a common room near the Porter's Office (I never used it). People in PV used the landing space and kitchens for socialising.

Generally, the accomms with shared facilities are most sociable and the ensuite ones with less per house (i.e. Stanmer Court) are less so. Beyond that, it really depends who you're housed with and their living habits, which no one can predict.

Woo! Yeah Brighton is such an awesome place :smile:

Neither did I, was purely basing it on what I saw in the accommodation brochure. I think there's not that much difference in terms of facilities (shared kitchens and bathrooms etc.), only thing I can think of is that there's only one communal TV room in Park Village but Park Houses have a TV room in each house. Park Houses are about also £20 more than Park Village. I managed to persuade my parents to upgrade me from East Slope to Park Village in the application only because East Slope rooms didn't have their own washbasin and there was next to no difference in price. Hope that helps!

I've firmed Sussex but I have no idea which accommodation to choose. I was initially going to go to Stanmer Court because it looks really nice and has an en-suite which I definitely want. Upon researching it though it's really out of the way of everything, right next to a dual carriageway and the most unsociable campus. What would be the second best to Stanmer court (apart from Swanborough) would you say? I like the look of Brighthelm because it looks so sociable there, although no en-suite and I need quiet time to relax and do my work.

I heard Lewes Court phase 2 is pretty cut off from people too. So I'm finding it so tricky to choose. :tongue:

Finally chose my accommodation after much debate to go there this september.

Chose Brighthelm, Stanmer Court & Lewes Court Phase 2 as my top choices. If I get anything below them, I'm going to be pretty pissed. :')

I think when it comes to a house being both social and comfortable, it's Brighthelm. You have everything in the house, you may lack en-suites but it's cheap enough to do your work as well as have house parties, much like Park Village.

I have firmed Sussex for biomedical science, I hold a conditional offer, AAB.
I have already applied for accommodation, my choices are swanborough, northfield and Lewis court in this order.

Do you know if and when we receive a welcome pack?

And I'm worried about making friends too, I don't know anyone who is going to Sussex :/
