Mine says 1st Sept for MMU! but that's on a Saturday!

I've still got no email from NHS Student Bursaries. I am so worried!

Yeah a Saturday makes sense :smile: I move in on a Sunday - you obviously get a Fresher's week first, then lectures would begin on the following Monday.

Eek - try writing on their Facebook page? They have a daily question and answer session.

Oh right! Didn't know we could start on a weekend! Can't wait!

I don't have Facebook, but I just rang them and they said the uni should've sent the details to them. But he said I could just register up and they'll invite me and then I'm like everyone else!

Seems like I was right to worry hehe! Apparently they have to send an invite 6 weeks before your start date and well this is 6 weeks before my start date. They also told me I should've got an invite on 16th! :frown:

What a mess up! They're really having issues this year, it seems :/

Sorry if this has already been covered, looked back a few months and couldn't see anything though!


Has anyone from here firmed Cardiff Met? Especially those not waiting on results. If so, have you heard anything? I got my CRB and health stuff through in April which was all sent off, but its nearly August now and I still have heard nothing. I know it being Wales there's the whole WAG award issue, so we won't know for sure we have a place til later in the summer, but I'm wondering if I should contact them, though I'm in SE Asia at the mo, so it makes it all a bit difficult!

That's what I ended up doing. I rang them and they said I should've been invited by 16th July. So I had to register and I'm now halfway through the form.

Is there a fixed deadline for this form?

I've been invited for a selection day at Greenwich for a postgrad SLT.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced an interview and would like to offer some advice? I know that I have to write a short piece on an aspect of communication, have a group discussion on the same topic and then a 1-1 interview.

Any ideas on what the aspect of communication could be about? Im worried that coming from a psychology background, i'll have less relevant experience compared to those with degrees in SLT or having worked as an assistant or something!

any suggestions are welcome!! thank you!

I can't offer you any advice about the 1 to 1 interview, as my uni didn't interview when I applied, but I thought I'd advise you as far as I can about the other things.

An 'aspect of communication' is open to interpretation, as that could mean body language, characteristics of speech, ex/rec. language, comprehension... so there's a few ideas for you!

You won't be up against anyone with a SLT degree already, as the postgrad SLT courses are just for those without any relevant first degree, and is effectively the same course as the undergrad, just more condensed, so SLTs don't need it!

They would definitely not be asking for a discussion of a disorder, they would have asked specifically for that if they wanted it. You need to show that you know what typical communication entails, before you can efficiently identify disorders of communication. :smile:

Hi im thinking of doing this course last minute ! what are the career prospects like? is it relatively easy to find a job ? also how does the banding business work?

No, it's not relatively easy, but there are jobs available if you're patient and willing to relocate...

The bands are outlined here. An NQT typically starts in a band 5 post and then applies for band 6 jobs after 12-18 months.

I also decided to do this course rather last minute (about this time time last year), so I'm sure you'll have enough time to gain work experience - start looking now! It's the best way to find out whether this is the career for you.

There are jobs available in most regions, although the newly qualified positions are usually the most competitive. At the moment, graduate jobs seem to be fixed term temporary or covering maternity leave, but this could usually lead to a full time position if you make a good impression by the end of your contract. The job market, like in any career, fluctuates a lot over time, so by the time I graduate in a year and half's time, it could be all change!

Newly qualified SLTs enter the NHS in a Band 5 position, which is usually between £21,000 and £29,000 a year depending on your experience and qualifications (apart from the degree obviously!). You will work your way up this band, then Band 6 which is £29,000 to 34,000 approximately, and then to Specialist/Managerial level which is Band 7 and up I believe, which can be anything from £34,000+.

I was wondering about NHS funding. I know that you're still eligible for it even if you already have a first degree. What about those people who have already finished their Masters and now want to apply for a NHS-funded undergraduate course like SLT? Are they still eligible?

Yeah I don't see why not. I already have a first degree and am eligible for funding from the NHS and Student Finance. Normally second degrees aren't funded (read up on the ELQ policy), but SLT is exempt from this. This means you should be eligible for NHS funding and a 50% maintenance loan from Student Finance... I'd double check with the relevant authorities though :smile:

No not yet - I start in October at Reading uni :smile: Ask PhoenixFortune (see above) for opinions on the SLT course; I believe she's going in to her second year.

You can definitely get NHS funding, as allied health courses are exempt from the usual funding rules. :smile:
