Second day at Bolton Wanderers and loving it. In a directors box overlooking the pitch which is our own and get to use it for the two games next week. If only they were still in the Prem!
How are you all finding the people you work with? I guess it depends on your team but mine's a bit cliquey.
Mines is much the same, and I'm the only trainee in indirect tax! The trainees in Corp Tax and Personal Tax don't really have the same social life as me and are a bit clique'y. I get on really well with the lads from Audit and Advisory though. Tax trainees are notoriously boring. Usually a poor showing from Tax on the social nights. Theres a few that are good craic though.

Yeah the ones in my team tend to stick to their groups and not really engage in small talk with others unless it's someone senior.

It's odd though, they're can be quite friendly when they need to be but otherwise are cliquey and boring!
Yeah I saw that on Accountacy Age a few days ago. Would still be too small to tackle the big 4, the gap is just massive.
Granted a BDO/ Grant Thornton merger would be a bit more to chew on but I'm more interested in being let go before I've started.

They tend to keep hold of recent grad hires when letting people go, wouldn't be good for reputation plus they don't want you guys going to the press, moaning to your friends and stopping your underclassmen from considering them as an employer etc. Also a lot easier to get you on board with the new vision/mission statement etc. than someone whose been there years and stuck in his ways. Although if things are really bad then this probably won't be the case...

Thanks :cry2:

Seriously though, I can't think of any logic behind grad cuts at the london offices, still unnerving though.

RSM and Tenon was before my time so would be interesting to see what's actually involved with swallowing up a firm of PKFs size. If anything actually materialises that is.

Most degrees (including A&F) can be applied to most careers. You can do a A&F degree and then go in to marketing, or you can do a marketing degree and become an accountant. However, if you actively don't want to be an accountant then I do wonder why you would choose to do an accounting degree?

I want to keep my options open as i am not the most decisive person...my feelings might change at the end of the degree

what other business type degrees can i do that are more open to a change in career?

Thanks

Talking from my own experience I did a degree in Business & Management which I found to be very flexible. My particular course gave a broad basic understanding in the first year across lots of areas (modules in HR, Marketing, Economics, Accounting, Operations, Management, ICT, Law, analytical options like Quant Techs, strategy options etcetera) whilst allowing you to specialise in one or two areas in your later years to a more advanced level. Personally I liked the opportunity to try a bunch of subjects and then narrow down your preferences from year 2 onwards, but if you already know what subject you would like to do then the first year could be off-putting due to the broad variety of subjects. In my experience the degree gave way to a broad range of career options. I was a bit indecisive and applied for a strange combination of areas including analyst roles, accounting roles, tech consulting roles and marketing roles, and the degree didn't hold me back in any of those.

Anyway that's just an option, and A&F may give just as good or better career options, I can only talk about what I know from my own experience!

Tax heads aren't boring at all .
In on this thread. Starting in a month at a big 4 for audit London.

Really wondering where in I will be spending most of my time working. Will it be at the main office or some random place in London? I guess we only find out when we get there. Also definitely looking forward to getting the first pay cheque

From what I understand the majority of our time (I'm also Big 4 London Audit) will be spent on client sites. More often then not that'll be London, but it seems travelling a bit further afield is not unusual

What division did everybody choose?

Starting in Insurance and Investment Management since they mentioned opportunities to rotate into due diligence and restructuring.
