Raleigh Park Accommodation?

I've been offered a place at Nottingham University through adjustment to study Economics, but the only accommodation available is Raleigh Park, which is away from the University Park Campus.

Does anyone know what it's like living at Raleigh? Is it social or is it a bit cut off from what happens on the main campus? Do many students who live there travel to the main campus?

Yeah, I only got the option of applying for Raleigh. I saw it on Friday, its basically just blocks of flats and houses, with a small common room, but no bar. I was just wondering whether anyone knows whether it's isolated, as most things seem to happen on the main campus, centred around the halls...

SPC is full now and has a waiting list on all room types. Only Raleigh will have places left. Neither are that far from the campus. They may look far but a 15/20 minute walk is all it takes.

Go with Raleigh. You'll have to make more of an effort but it's much better than the alternatives. It's a REALLY social place since there're a lot of students crammed in the same place. Try to get a flat in Silitoe Court if possible.

Raleigh is better, SPC is too out of the way and is not official halls. Raleigh is social!

No but I lived across the road in Opal 1. Raleigh get coaches from the SU to transport them to the city centre for freshers, and it's only about 8 minutes walk away from the hopper bus on JC which can take you to UP.

Are students at Raleigh/Opal 1 fairly isolated (not necessarily geographically, but socially) from the students living on UPC during freshers/throughout the year? You say they get coaches, is that different to how people at UPC get into town?

It is 'bascially just blocks of flats and houses', but that is also true of all the self-catered (off-campus) accommodation. It had a bar when I was there, so unless said bar has shut there is a bar. Hall bars are very underused however anyway, even on campus.

Nope. All halls will have coaches put on to get to Freshers events, and Raleigh is slightly closer to the city centre than UP. It is easy enough to get to UP, 30 minute walk (slightly further than the walk into town), so you can easily get to any social stuff happening on UP, and there is the free hooper bus from Jubilee (5-10 minutes walk from Raleigh). Raleigh has a JCR like all the other official halls, so you get all the JCR events. After freshers week, social stuff is either whatever night-club is student night that night or society stuff, which hall you are in doesn't matter for either of those, apart from maybe who you pre-drink with or go out with.

Overall, I think you are over-estimating the amount of stuff that happens on campus, and how difficult it is to get to campus for the stuff that does happen there. You will be fine, the only drawback of Raleigh for you is getting up slightly earlier for lectures as you are further away, but lots of people who study on UP are in Raleigh and SPC.

SPC is not an official hall in the same way that the others are, even less so than Raleigh is. Although they do have their own special yellow bus :P

What do you mean by 'official' then? They have a JCR (Which is properly supported by the SU just like the campus halls) for instance; and as such they take part in Week One as a hall, not as "resident outside halls". I think that page may be in error - I have never seen SPC treated any less than Raleigh (unlike Opal 1 for instance which has no JCR, and so on).

I applied for accommodation a few hours ago and got the option of going to SPC, so I'm not sure why people think it's full up (unless some people pulled out for whatever reason.) I chose Raleigh anyway since SPC seemed to be a bit isolated based on the map.

SPC is like 5 minutes walk up the road?! And it's university arranged accommodation in the same aspect as Raleigh and Broadgate. Need to get your facts straight before giving out incorrect advice like you did with Opal 1.

Raleigh has more students living there but it's all split up into separate courts and buildings.

SPC has less living there but are all surrounding two courtyard areas, plus students in both parts end up using facilities in the other.

If you're going to look at a map then use a proper one like Google Maps or Bing...using the uni accommodation map is ridiculous. On a proper map you can see that SPC, Opal 1 and Raleigh are very close to each other.

I will also add that, so far, the least social Facebook group this year has been the one for Raleigh Park. Their group was slow to get created, had only a few members for ages. It's started to catch up a bit but considering it houses way more students than SPC you'd expect more...so you be the judge of that one.

I was trying to decide between Broadgate, Raleigh and SPC. Broadgate for the numbers and the area, Raleigh for the cheap, low-cost rooms and SPC for the best room per cost. SPC won by far. At the end of the day though, it's up to preference...do you want 1,200+ students or around 850? Do you want an ensuite or a cheaper room? A free bus or a 5 minute shorter walk?

Slight hypocrisy there. All the University Halls Official groups were created at the same time, so that is just wrong. In fact if you actually look now at all the pages created by weekone exec you will see Raleigh is by far one of the most popular and active pages out of all the halls.

With regards to previous questions, Raleigh is an awesome place to live and if anything it's more sociable than a lot of campus halls. You only need to look at last year to see that. They won Mr & Mrs Raleigh, best hall for rag raiding, had loads and some of the largest socials (because it's such a big hall they get ALOT more funding than campus halls). The only thing is its harder to socialise (if youre a hermit who puts no effort into meeting people), because everything is in self contained flat, your are not forced to go and meet new people (whereas in halls you all eat together..). Having said that, the people who go out and make the effort would thrive as far as socialising goes..

Raleigh students attend the same nightclubs as people who live on campus, but get there more quickly because of the proximity of the hall to town, Raleigh has an absolutely insane nightlife and is in no way socially excluded within itself; between courts and blocks this year the strongest and most powerful of friendships have formed. The facebook page for Raleigh is the only one that has a video. It is also linked to a twitter page, has interactive polls, previews of WeekOne and an innovative "Raleigh manual."

No. Was I referring to user-created groups on Facebook which matter far more than ones created by people who have never lived there nor will they ever live there? Yes.
