Film Fanatics - Chat Thread II

Just finished watching Black Hawk Down for the first time. I feel strangely cold but very sad after watching it. I have never really had a long term emotional impact from a film but this has left me dazed for around 15 minutes now. The horror of it and the pointlessness hit me in a way it never would or could have when I was ~18. It is a strange feeling and has made me feel actually physically ill

I love that film, anyone know whatever happened to Tony Jaa? I saw Ong Bak and heard of its two sequels (though opinion wards me away from them). Thought he was going to be quite big at the time, shame there hasn't been a breakthough.

Watching The Hunger Games tonight, hopefully I don't hate it as I thought the books were decent.

It's a good adaptation and manages to stay true to the book. I just wish they hadn't tried to preserve their rating at the expense of showing the violence/brutality of the Games. The audience at my cinema actually laughed at a pivotal death scene because it came across so ludicrously on screen. Had it been portrayed with more explicit and cold brutality than what the rating allowed, I think the reaction would have been more sober and shocked.

I've not seen it or read it but might be a similar situation to Harry Potter 6 with Ron and the poisoned drink. I knew what was happening when he collapsed and then people in the cinema with me laughed. It did quickly die when they realised just what was happening mind so might have been slightly an ignorance issue?

I did think that the naked ghouls of Harry and Hermione were a little much for the age rating in Deathly Hallows pt.1. I don't even remember a similar thing happening in the books

Hey, im new to this.... my fav film at the moment in rise of the planet of the apes, i really want to watch the avengers and hunger games, but ive read the hunger games books THEY ARE AMAZEBALLS!

Yeah that's always a problem with these kind of adaptations. On a separate note do you have any recommendation for dystopian novels? I've been tempted with The Maze Runner lately, have you read it?

I can't say I've heard of that book so it must be new. My exposure to dystopian fiction revolves around much earlier fiction from when I did my dissertation. Books like Zamyatin's We, Brave New World, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, A Clockwork Orange, The Handmaid's Tale, Neuromancer and Logan's Run - if you're interested in reading any of them, they should be your first port of call in terms of dystopian literature.

Why haven't i heard of the film The hunger games?! Is it any good?

I didn't particularly enjoy it but I haven't read the books which is kind of unfair because I've heard (as always), "the books are way better than the films".

It's like the film, 'Inkheart'; I adored the book, couldn't put it down for 3 days. But then the film was such a let down - it was terrible (although I do love Andy Serkis).

Any great movies I can watch on Netflix? I just finished hit list which was sublime ! Great acting as usual by Cuba gooding junior
