Thanks so much for reminding! I looooooove chemistry.
No problem! I love chemistry too I've only actually discovered this in the past few months so have been working my way through some of the 2012 ones. It's crazy how on the honours board people have managed to do it in like 20 minutes!!!

Yeah me too! I had been planning on doing Chemistry at uni for like the whole of last year and no teacher at school had mentioned it to me. Came across it like 2 months ago and had a go at the June one. Was kinda tough!
You'll have to keep me up to date on how you're doing! We'll see who wins

I didn't decide on chemistry until like May this year! Whereabouts have you applied to? and yeah, I'm surprised it never got mentioned at all at school! I did the June one a few weeks ago... it was hard but not hard as the may one that I did today! I liked the "how much graphene would be needed to cover the surface of the Earth" question... thought it was pretty cool
And yes! I'll probs be on this thread while I attempt it!

So are you in year 12?
Oxford, Warwick (got an offer from them today!), Durham, UCL and Imperial what you applying to?
I couldn't get past arranging the elements into the 50 year discovery thing! Arghh
I ripped up cards and tried doing it like that. Still no luck!
Oooh what course?! Shoulda applied Oxford! ;p
If you try and figure out which two have to be in the middle it makes it a bit easier. I applied for natural sciences at cambridge, and I'll hopefully specialise in chemistry. I applied there because I really like certain topics in biology too, so I'd be able to do them in the first few years too. Was hard choosing between cambridge and oxford though!

AHHH, stuck on the gold question, I got the surface area of the earth in m^2 as 5.1*10^14, the mass per m^2 of graphene is 7.4x10^-7, so it follows that the mass required to cover the earth is 5.1x10^14*7.4x10^37? And the asnwer is incorrect o.O

You do realise that the questions for this year begin at midnight tonight? =S

Why 10^37?
Plus, for the surface area of the Earth I used the figure 510,072,000km2
Maybe your rounding will have caused an issue. I can't remember what figure I used for the mass of graphene per m2 though.
PS: You do realise this is the June 2012 challenge, not the November one, right?
