Hey, just wondering whether there's any sort of creative writing community?

I know from living with someone who studied creative writing that although there is no specific society (that I know of) the students often socialise together. You may also find opportunities to do extracurricular activities in conjunction with the Theatre, Film and TV department as a script writer if you so desire!

If it's a community spirit you want Aberystwyth has that in abundance! the small town creates that for you, You'll also be able to find societies catering for pretty much every taste from caving, chess, rock music to glee.

Most departments have a society of sorts, if it so happens yours don't, make one. New societies are always popping up, from the departmental ones to the weird and wacky ones... (Zombie apocalypse society being one of my favourites recently)

That would be ALAG.
Hi what is the accommodation like? And how easy/hard is it to get en-suite? I have an unconditional offer.

Hi what is the accommodation like? And how easy/hard is it to get en-suite? I have an unconditional offer.

Please have a watch the videos and read the posts in the video directory thread found here for general accommodation talk.

With regards to getting a en suite room, there aren't that many of them when compared to the rest of the accommodation. The flats with en suite are split between campus and the seafront so if you want en suite please be aware that you may be placed on the seafront. The opinion of living on the seafront is pretty mixed, some who love it and others who hate the long walk up Penglais Hill for lectures in the morning. Additionally the new refurbished flats are ones in Cwrt Mawr and Trefloyne, not the en suite ones so there kitchens are generally old ones. Granted they all work perfectly well (well most of the time!) but when compared to the new refurbished flats, the kitchens aren't the greatest in Rosser.

A lot of people apply for en suite rooms but as there aren't that many of en suite rooms there are a lot of people initially disappointed. However they soon come to sense that having a en suite isn't vital in their life!
For example, I'm living with 9 other people, we have 2 shower rooms and two toilets. You may think "OMG!!!! queues!!! :frown:" but it isn't like that at all. Since everyone has different timetables, everyone is using the showers at different times in the day so there is very rarely a queue. After a month and a half of living in my flat, today was the first time I've had to wait for the shower. I waited a whole minute, the en suite rooms granted I'd be straight in the shower but is that worth the extra money? That extra money is nearly £1000, which is totally not worth it in my opinion. My nice refurbished kitchen with leather sofas, breakfast bar, two ovens and two hobs is worth much more than that in my opinion. Extra worth which I'm not paying for, result!
can someone please help me with costs as i am looking to start next september at aber uni but i have no idea how much money i need to live there or how to get a loan or anything can someone help :frown: p.s. im from newcastle so it will cost quite a bit im guessing?

Hey Nathan, I'm going to quote OpitimisticRam in this, as I believe he will be the best person to ask. I'm guessing you want to know about living costs as well as accommodation etc?

Yes, I will be I guess. Thanks for quoting me.

I've just had a quick look on ArrivaTrainsWales website and the price for a off peak return with a railcard, Newcastle to Aberystwyth is £82.25. This would take between 6 and 7 hours, with one change at Birmingham New Street. You can get it slightly cheaper, around the £70/75 mark with splitting your journey and buying single advance tickets however you will be tied to those exact trains, ArrivaTrainsWales also doesn't offer seat reservations for single advance tickets. Usually a seat from Birmingham is easy to find, but you have to make sure you are in the correct carriage as the train splits at Dovey Junction so if you're unsure or inexperienced a seat reservation is a wise idea.

You can also get the bus down direct to the university. This will cost more than the train, £86.40 and take over 11 hours. I haven't looked at splitting the journey, but you would have to change buses at Birmingham so perhaps it could be cheaper splitting the journey and looking at prices Aber to Birmingham and Birmingham to Newcastle.

For living costs, see the accommodation fees page here. Choose a halls of residence that you would like to live in and work from that number. For example I live in Cwrt Mawr and pay £69 (instead of £90) per week as I received the accommodation bursary (£800 discount) for having Aber as my firm choice.

Food wise, it depends on where you like to shop and what food you like to eat. There are all sorts of independent grocery shops and butchers in town which offer some great quality food but it can be more expensive than the supermarkets. In Aber we have a Coop, Iceland, Lidl and 3 Spar's (one 24/7), obviously Lidl is the cheapest but it has random brands so some people don't like shopping there. Outside of the town centre is a big Morrison's that has just had a store refurbishment. I usually spend around £30 a week on food, this is spending around £15 on 'general' things in the supermarkets and then meat, eggs, fruit/veg in the local independent stores around the town.

Nights out can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. Many pubs and bars around the town have promotion nights on different days so any day you go out you can always find a place with a pound party or similar. A general night out, I usually spend £10/20 depending on what I drink or if I'm buying for friends.

Taxi's are cheap around the town, depending on company you should be paying £3 per car during the day and £1 per person at night.

As D-Box says, do look at all the scholarships and bursarys that Aber offer. They have a huge amount of things, apply to lots and you're sure to get something. I heavily suggest doing the entrance scholarship exams, a lot of awards are handed out and the amount of applicants who take the exams isn't that large so the chance of being awarded something is quite high.

Ok, so I'm pretty set on going to Aber, just waiting for an offer now.

I was just wondering whether there was a Girls Rugby team? I know it is pretty standard, but some places actually don't have one D:

Also, what societies would you suggest joining? Are there any "MustJoin" societies in your opinion? (sensible or wacky, I don't mind!)

How many students use the National Library? is it a good place to go to do some work/research or can you find everything you need in the Uni Libraries?

One final thing, how easy is it to find a Job in Aber?

They do, my flatmate is part of it. :yy:

Not really, although people generally like to join the society which is based around their course, to meet people studying the same subject. I, for example, study International Politics, and therefore joined the InterPol Society. It's not a 'must' though.

I've found everything so far in the Hugh Owen Library on campus, but I know quite a few people do use the National Library.

We have a job shop in the Student's Union building, but I don't know personally, as I haven't searched for a job myself. It's advisable though, from what I can gather, to apply to wherever you want to work during the summer - one girl whom I know applied to work in Varsity (a bar in Aberystwyth town centre) during the summer, and got it. But when others tried to apply in September, they couldn't get one at the same establishment.

Not very easy. They say on the Aber website, they have so much jobs for students available, but the truth is different. I went to the job centre during freshers or the first week asking wether they could help me with finding a job and all they did was they gave me a link to site with vacancies, where there is maybe one new ad every two to three weeks. There isn't a lack of work-force in the town. All jobs go quick. If you are really outgoing and enthusiastic and have lots of experience, it would be better, tho.

It is difficult to find a job... if you don't really look. everyone I know has a job because they actually went out there, chucked their CV into every place they could see and got a job! it is possible! the careers website is pretty good, if you sign up they will send you emails every week with new jobs that have gone online, but I would recommend just giving out your CV at the first opportunity. Remember... everyone will be thinking the same thing, so get yours out their first!

where I work I get a hell of alot of CV's every week, make sure yours stands out!

good luck on the job hunt!

This thread isn't for discussing offers or the application period, please find that in the "Aberystwyth Applicants 2013 Megathread" found here.

You will find that a few users who are applicants this year have received emails to say that the university have received their applications. I'll copy your post into that thread so you can read the replies for yourself and get to know which users are applying this year.
